* Had an antiquated tax engine - actually 2 to allow for taxation in all our jurisdictions.  SOVOS GTD allowed for the consolidation of tax engines into one.
* Move reliance on the management of tax configurations from IT to the business users
* More easily adapt to changing tax rules (i.e. Brexit, 2020 EU VAT changes)

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

STS and outsourcing the sales tax returns. I don't have a tax department, and we file returns in almost every state.  If I receive a notice from a state regarding an error or payment deficiency, I send it to Sovos, and they do the research and correct the problem. I have a good working relationship with my sales tax preparer.

In addition to the time savings, outsourcing the returns is less expensive than adding a full-time employee. I have been using this service since 2009 and over the years have had several sales tax audits. To date, I have not had an audit with any material findings.

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

Occasional quirky system issues. For example, last month I could not run a transaction detail report.  I will say that Tech Support has always been quick to solve any issues that I may encounter.

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are in the process of moving from on-premise to the cloud. At the same time, we are installing an Oracle patch to replace the system transaction ID number with a customer invoice number on the monthly transaction report. Currently, I run the transaction detail and then send it to my IT department. IT then has to run an SQL query to match the system ID number to an invoice number. I need to know the invoice number in the event something needs to be investigated down the road.

  ### 10. An sluggish solution with so-so support compared to Avalara

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

The system has at least the following features that I can think of:
a. Updated rules, rates, exemptions about tax
b. Up-to_date Data for all jurisdictions
c. Custom Transaction-Level Reporting
d. Data Aggregation and able to sync with Salesforce and NetSuite

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

I can't think of anything that I dislike about this company or solution. We went through an ERP migration from GP to NetSuite, and we need to implement a tax solution within a short period. It was an amazing experience with the account management and support team. 
However, two years later, we end up switching to Avalara. Avalara is more intuitive and easier to use.

**Recommendations to others considering Sovos:**

After using Sovos for two years, we switched to Avalara as Avalara is easier to use and more robust in functionality. If you use Netsuite, this is a great combo.

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The system eliminates the burden associated with tax filing and compliance work. Without a system like Sovos, I can not imagine how any company can keep up with the ever-changing tax landscape. In the US alone, there are thousands of jurisdictions.

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

The user portal is handy and makes tracking notices and issues easy to follow and monitor.  In addition , the sales tax engine is accurate and fast.

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

The downside of Sovos is the upfront configuration and setup.  All products need to entered and properly coded in order to configure sales tax correctly.  this burden fell on us(the customer) to do all the set up and with over 20,000 products took quite some time to enter.

**Recommendations to others considering Sovos:**

Make sure to not take any short cuts on the upfront integration.  Be as detailed as possible when setting up items.  The more detailed you are the more accurate the sales tax determination engine.  Also make sure to integrate with both eCommerce site and ERP system.

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is nice to have an all in one source for sales tax computation, filing and notice handling all in one.  Previously we had handled some in house and farmed some of this out to 3rd party(CPA's)

The only thing that I like about Sovos is that they send invoices to the government, if the solution is working.

Professionalism, communication, speed, compliance, development, project management, etc.

Professionalism - deadlines are not kept, nobody takes accountability for problems
Communication - emails are not responded to, information communicated is clearly not understood
Speed - questions and errors are not addressed in a reasonable time-frame, constant reminders and escalations must occur in order for work to get done
Compliance - since go-live we've already been out-of-compliance with the mandates of the government for 2 instance an these issues have still not been corrected
Development - the development and coding of Sovos is very sloppy and not what would be expected for the price paid
Project Management - updates were not regularly sent, the project manager had no idea what was going on, budget usagage was not accurately communicated, overages were charged without our approval

**Recommendations to others considering Sovos:**

Find another partner. Sovos does not show any care or regard for us as their customer. This communication is absolutely terrible. Anytime that you want anything fixed or changed then you will receive an SoW that is incredibly overpriced.

Electronic invoicing which are sent to the government and approved via the Cloud.

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

Received high quality support relating to expiring security certificates.  They helped us at every step to ensure the new certificates were generated and installed properly.  The risk of losing productive connectivity with Sovos Taxcloud had been mitigated.  Marvin the engineer we worked with was highly engaged and eager to help us generate the certificates properly and retain connectivity in our development, quality assurance, and production environments.  Marvin has always been a pleasure to work with..

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

It would be helpful to receive notices of any disconnections or outages we experience in production.  This would eliminate issues we have with miscalculating tax for some invoices. In some cases it was difficult to narrow down the root cause of some connectivity and slow performance issues.  Tracing tools and early warning alerts would be great in assisting us with making sure tax calculations are always accurate.

GTD is a cloud solution.  No need to update manually every month. Rates are up to date.

GTD pricing model is more expensive. They charge based on # of calls to Sovos without providing any backup for their claims.

**Recommendations to others considering Sovos:**

Check from all angle if it can satisfy your needs, by taking time. Don't be hurry.  Be careful with their pricing model. They charge based on number of calls to Sovos, without providing any support on # of calls they claim.

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Trying to get classify the Customers  correctly and decide to bill them or not. 
With Cloud solution, we don't have to update on premise solution every month. The rates are always up to date.

Communication is going to be the biggest obstacle with Sovos. They have the tools, they just need to implement a better/consistent way of communicating.

When able to access and working correctly, it is useful and efficient.

Consider E-Invoice and Tax determination as separate contracts. You won't have a common account manager and it feels like two separate companies when you negotiate terms.

I wanted to answer your question about multiple geocodes in a single county as this question comes up often and can be confusing. State governments empower local municipalities (cities and counties) to impose sales tax. On top of that, governments sometimes create special taxing districts where a sales tax rate may be imposed to fund particular community programs. Counties generally contain multiple cities and towns but cities can also straddle multiple counties (for example, Atlanta resides in both Fulton and DeKalb counties), and taxing districts can be created without any attention to city or county boundaries. 

Determining the proper state and local sales tax for a given address can only be accomplished through creating an extensive set of geo codes, each unique to a particular combination of state and local sales tax rates.

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

The user-friendly features of the site are great. The ability to import multiple excel files to Sovos and have their system add up to totals for each TIN. We work in three different accounting systems, so this ability is crucial. 

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

The TIN matching seems less reliable than I'd prefer. I am registered with the IRS TIN matching program, so log in there is Sovos TIN matching isn't working. It's an extra step that I have to take, which I was looking forward to skipping when this program was first presented to me. 

**Recommendations to others considering Sovos:**

I wish I would've found this program years ago. Having a feature in NetSuite is nice, but this can really work with any system as long as you can pull that data into a spreadsheet. 

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Every year until 2018, when we signed up with Sovos, has been a nightmare in the way of 1099 processing. 2018 went smoothly.

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

Using Managed Services to create and submit our files has been well worth the investment. Prior to using this service, our Information Technology team was responsible for much of the file creation, and they dreaded it. Now, the field maps are updated correctly each new tax season, and Sovos helps us work through any data validation issues. Our files are always transmitted on time - we never miss a deadline. 

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

In the past, some of our processes were not well documented so there was some re-education of Sovos staff. However, in the past few years Sovos has greatly improved their documentation of our process, and this has made all the difference. Managed Services continued to update their documentation as we identify and solve issues. 

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Reduced FTE costs for Information Technology department, accurate and useful validation reports, email notification reports for eStatements, eStatement access through our Online Banking vendor submitting web calls to Sovos. The process is now very streamlined, well documented, and efficient. We allow the experts to assist with updating the data maps and loading our data - much less hassle for us.

**What do you like best about Sovos?**

We currently use the product Taxport for a variety of year-end tasks. The system is easy to navigate and the instructions are all pretty straight forward. If I have any questions, I log into the client user portal and either submit a case or I call Sovos Support and they are very helpful!

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

I honestly have yet to find anything that I dislike. The product we use is very sufficient and the customer service through Sovos is very good.

**Recommendations to others considering Sovos:**

The customer portal is very intuitive and provides a wide variety of information. The customer service is excellent. I would highly recommend!

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sovos Intelligent Compliance Cloud has just overall made our processes more efficient and have saved a lot of time with the knowledge documents that are available.

Post filing import limitations. Would like to be able to import complex corrections into previously transmitted records.

We are managing our large-scale 1099 reporting function with Taxport. The ease of its use, and the power and flexibility of importing and reporting, help us to successfully manage the 1.2M 1099 forms we file each year.

All inclusive, there is a significant amount of information available on the cloud.

Sometimes it a little hard to create a specific enough search to locate very nuanced processes. The search results aren't always logical.

Keep working on improving the search, it's gotten better since I first used it, but still can be a bit of a drag

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Streamlined processes, decreased processing times of using software, allowed ease in creating cases. I've been able to find additional information about using the software that wouldn't have become apparent without the cloud access.

We use the Taxware product from Sovos, so I'm not sure if it is part of the Intelligent Compliance Cloud, but if it is, oh boy, it's a great product.  Helps us keep current on our exemptions and our reporting has improved due to the detail of the reports the system produces.

**What do you dislike about Sovos?**

Well I'm not sure if this is part of the Sovos Intelligent Compliance Cloud, so if it's not, then I dislike that.

If this is what I'm using, it's great.

**What problems is Sovos solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Again, not sure if Taxware is part of this Intelligent Compliance Cloud but if it is, it has solved the problem of keeping current on exemption certificates and if the customer doesn't send us what we need, then the system begins charging them sales tax.  This has greatly increased our documentation compliance.

We are able to import our payment/financial/tax data from our financial system to a cloud-based system that produces the most up-to-date IRS forms. Sovos allows us to import our data, generate our tax forms and file produces the electronic file to submit to the IRS

The billing invoices are not as detailed as we would like.

Sovos offers several services that may be worth considering such as B-notice solicitations and e-statements.

We are using it to meet our state and federal tax information reporting requirements. Sovos regular compliance updates ensure we are in compliance without having to spend hours doing tax research.

I have used the SOVOS GTD for about 8 years now. They have made improvements but I think more can be made with the user interface at least.

The Global Tax Determination system GTD (Taxware) is fantastic at calculating customer rates. I like the reporting and the testing functionality.

Some lack of data integration due to separate databases. Not being able to capture snapshot of events that have occurred, as databases are always 'real time'.  Inability to create one AFP file of 1099-MISC forms.

Electronic IRS and state transmittal filings.  Emailing of 1099 PDFs.
