Git can be challenging to wrap your head around, and command-line can be intimidating, especially for new developers. SourceTree does an excellent job of providing a visual basis for how source control works. **What do you dislike about SourceTree?** Their menus don't offer the best context options, at least on the macOS version. Sometimes when I'm working in a hotfix, it will let me take actions that inadvertently mess up my working environment. Their "yours" vs "theirs" merge logic can be a little confusing when you are bringing a feature branch down into a remote environment and dealing with merge conflicts from multiple sources. **Recommendations to others considering SourceTree:** SourceTree is a great free option. It has a low ramp-up time, a clean UI, and it does everything our team needs out of the box. **What problems is SourceTree solving and how is that benefiting you?** SourceTree allows us to have multiple developers working on a single code base in tandem, without fear of overwrites or lost code. It provides us with the basis to deploy code to both our primary and development environments. These abilities give our company a great deal of confidence in what we do and how we do it. ### 2. It makes sense to work with a GUI. I find that source tree works well, specifically if you are working in the Atlassian environment with bitbucket. I do a lot of command-line processing with Git, and Git's built-in feature to visualize the branches and history is adequate but basic. SourceTree gives a great overall view of the entire commit history, as well as allowing you to see a snapshot of the project state just by selecting a point in time. **What do you dislike about SourceTree?** Trying to do basic commands such as branching and merging can be a little tricky at first until you get the hang of it. I tried managing a repository solely with SourceTree, and I ended up using SourceTree for visualization and command-line Git for executing most processes. **Recommendations to others considering SourceTree:** Use it! As the project grew and more developers were added, it seemed a little tricky to keep track of the status of some branches and commits. Its auto git flow feature in which it creates develop and master branches for production and development environments, is impressive. It also supports multiple version control systems such as bit bucket, GitLab's, Github, etc. We can add multiple accounts, and switching between them when pulling and pushing requests is a breeze. **What do you dislike about SourceTree?** It fulfills its job very well but sometimes source tree version updates are a bit difficult. It makes my system unresponsive for a while. But from last few updates, its not hanging up and do its work very well. **Recommendations to others considering SourceTree:** The source tree is a product of Atlassian, and they also provide bitbucket as their version control system. It will be much comfortable to use if your primary used git versioning system is bitbucket due to their exceptionally well compatibility. **What problems is SourceTree solving and how is that benefiting you?** Using source tree, I am managing my code version and differentiating between development and production environments setup. It gives you good visualizations of the important functionalities. I particularly like being able to see various "chunks" of changes on a file and choose to discard some of them individually. **What do you dislike about SourceTree?** I always have trouble with authentication and I'm not sure why. Once you have things set up it generally works but I often get into situations where it will ask me for a username/password for a certain account. Fail to authenticate but not actually tell me it has failed and just go into an endless loop of making me enter my credentials. I have also run into scenarios (I believe they are authentication related) where it will just get into a broken state and crash right when it starts up. **What problems is SourceTree solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use it to work on a common code base with a team of engineers. It is also already integrated with tools like JIRA, Bitbucket, thus having this makes a lot more sense than just having any other GIT/SVN client. **What do you dislike about SourceTree?** The tool sometimes gets too featureful when trying to do simple operations, which is not an off-putter per se but can be of occasional discomfort to the user which is small thing to worry about when using SourceTree. **Recommendations to others considering SourceTree:** It's a really well-designed tool, and I would recommend it to everyone to use a repository management tool. **What problems is SourceTree solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use SourceTree as a full-fledged code repository manager and an integrated tool to be used with other Atlassian products like Jira and Bitbucket. This will enable you to debug and quality check at different times in a build process. **What do you dislike about SourceTree?** It has some very weird authentication behavior. Pushes/pulls/commits fail randomly - or for ridiculous reasons - like I switched from wifi to a wired connection. I know what I just wrote - it is that ridiculous. This may be just a co-relation but without debugging SourceTree behaviour more deeply, I can only make guesses. But the largest issue that persists 5-7 years after I first started facing it - authentication. The app randomly cannot auth with bitbucket via https/ssh and I can't seem to do much about it till suddenly it starts working after several restarts, changes from https to ssh or the other way.
