NetPath is a great hop by hop analysis tool and very useful for troubleshooting network delays, configuration issues, packet drops along the path taken to reach a particular service being served at a TCP port level. Network InSights for various devices are adding more value - eg. Cisco ASA HA topology, Cisco stackable switches, Site-to-Site VPN's, F5 load balancing. Dynamic Maps 2.0 are much better than the erstwhile Network Atlas. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** It's not actually a dislike but more of customization flexibility - ability to chose colors, fonts etc on Dashboards, Maps etc. Need of a common discovery engine across all Orion modules. (This pertains to other modules under Orion like IPAM, UDT, NCM and NTA) SolarWinds can help by increasing and creating more ready to pick widgets that can be just a drag and drop to dashboards. **Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Observability:** Consider the whole stack of Network Modules on the SolarWinds Orion platform rather than NPM as a standalone product. The other modules are real value adds to help you on the journey to Monitor, Manage and Analyze. NPM & VNQM for Monitoring NCM & IPAM for Managing NTA for Analysis Addons like UDT help with troubleshooting. The Network monitoring can then be enhanced to include Servers, Applications, Storage, Virtual & Cloud. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** The ability to identify hardware issues like power supply failures, cooling issues etc has reduced hardware replacement times. Performance monitoring metrices have been configured to proactively trigger alerts of different types - email alerts, SMS alerts, Slack messages. This helps with preventing issues from occuring. Dashboards for various teams have helped with monitoring the right components. The flexibility to include charts, graphs is very useful. Comprehensive reports of different types availability, utilization, status etc have been able to address all audit and compliance needs. Creation of users with different roles and responsibilities make it easier to ensure that only the desired users have the rights to view components allocated to them. NetPath has also helped with identifying bandwidth and latency issues with Service Providers - both Internet as well as Intranet (MPLS leased circuits) Device Views give a nice visual depiction of the node under monitoring and hence eases the strain of going through logs and other data. ### 8. Since Solarwinds was breached two years ago they have made incredible strides to ensure that it wouldn't happen again. There is a lot out of the box you can do as far as monitoring windows and linux but also a lot of functionality to build out your own custom monitors. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** SAM is a resource intesnsive application. If you have a large envrionment and have a lot of servers and services to monitor then you are going to need to make sure you have plenty of dedicated resources to run the application. This is even more of an issue too if you are running other Solarwinds products a long side SAM. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** Service uptime monitoring and efficiency monitoring. Having SAM has allowed me the ability to not spend near as much time keeping an eye on things. I can get notifications when things go down which in turn lets me get other things done. ### 31. It's harder to work with than most SolarWinds tools for doing anything custom with the data permanently, though this may be changing with the Modern Dashboards feature. We can manage so many groups of networks and it also makes it easy to find an IP when we don't remember what it belongs to. IPAM in SolarWinds allows us to tag an IP and show it as USED, RESERVED, AVAILABLE or TENTATIVE. IPAM also allows us to break out networks and subnets and create grups for each and easily organize it all. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** I am not familiar with many other options for what we do here, but I would like to see a more extensive vendor group for solarwinds IPAM. What I mean is when I add an IP and the necessary information for IPAM and it can detect a connection, it sometimes adds the detailed info like hostname or vendor on there. But we use SO MANY, that it does not seem to know all of them yet. An update in that regard would be very welcomed. I would also like to point out that it would be helpful to show the detailed information about each IP more compactly? It would be nice not having to scroll to the right to see the switch name or VLAN info. I mean, this can probably be organized by teams. I am in networking, so I would like to see networking details, whereas a DC tech might only need hostname and IP info. **Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Observability:** It is easy to use, and I recommend you at least give it a shot. Some other options out there might entice you, but IPAM has been around for a while. They know what they are doing and how we engineers like to use the service, so they adapted their services. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** We onboard many people regularly, and some engineers have moved on too. IPAM makes it easy to manage IPs to devices and makes it easy to see the pattern we have set forth for future generations of engineers. So they can take over quickly and maintain it as we have. Our customers needed uninterruptable work and we needed to be notified in time when there was downtime. Up until recently, Pingdom worked very well for us. Unfortunately, a few days ago our customers started to complain that some of our servers were down (for a few hours). It was a minor issue that could be easily fixed in a minute, but we learned about it very late because Pingdom checks didn't work. When we logged on to our account at Pingdom we saw that our subscription was suspended even though we paid a year ahead in January. When we contacted Pingdom support they told us that they cancelled our account because we were a Russian company and they needed to comply with US export restrictions. They didn't even bother to warn us about cancelling our subscription. We have been their devoted customer for years and overnight we became enemies for them and they just closed their service for us WITHOUT a warning. Not even a simple email. Because of this incident many of our customers - from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Germany - had to suffer several hours of downtime simply because Pingom had silently turned off our subscription a couple of weeks before the incident and we didn't know about that. We blissfully continued to rely on their monitor alerts and this is how they treated their long-standing customer in the end. We wouldn't mind them turning off our account because of export control restrictions. But they could at least tell us about it. Overnight we became their hated enemy so much so that they didn't even take the time to tell us "Listen, guys, the US government says that we mustn't have you among our customers so regretfully we have to cancel the subscription. Please, take your time to find another service and don't hold a grudge against us.". And we would say "No problem, thanks for letting us know.". And this would be a civil way to resolve that. Now, I cannot recommend this service to anyone, especially if your company is outside the US. Technically Pingdom is a great service. However, the idea of a monitoring service is that it should be 100% reliable. But you cannot be sure that your subscription won't be silently turned off by Pingdom when your country is suddenly on a list of enemies (even if you sell on the global market as we do). **Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Observability:** Technically is the best platform for monitoring. But you can't rely on it because they can silently turn off your subscription even if paid for, for political reasons. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** Monitoring servers and website for downtime. ### 42. The one console access allows me to monitor who is using the system and grant rights base privileges so a tech may not, inadvertently make changes that affect production. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** Not much here. Can you customize your solution? There is a community that speak/promotes changes to the product, who would dislike that? This allowed us to jump to action during work-hours as soon as those alarms came into our Distribution list. The same alarms, were also visible by our NOC, so that 24/7 monitoring could successfully occur.
