"Really comprehensive software that makes your practice smoother"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Smokeball?

I love that smokeball is always updating. We have been using them for 8 years or so and it has gone from a simple cloud based document sharing and work production software to integrating much more and basically all aspects of our practice, inclduing billing, ordering title, and court filings. I also live how responsive and helpful their customer service is, when i have an issue I do not hesitate to contact them and I know it will be resolved timely (if not right away) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Gamechanger for my practice!"
5/5
What do you like best about Smokeball?

Great timekeeping function. Integrations with MS Office are also really helpful. Search function is powerful. Lots of court forms as templates and they are updated upon request. They will also create templates for you if you send sample motions. Smokeball Pay is also excellent and better than Law Pay IMO. I appreciate how they comnstanbtly update the product. The client communication platform is also solid and being updated to improve. One of the best feathures are the apps. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Smokeball?

Not many downsides I can think of. Certainly, nothing that makes me regret getting SB. I wish there was a little more access to reps, but that is how it goes with most services providers. That said, the rep are fantastic and work hard to satisfy your needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Katharine Uhrich of Smokeball

So great to hear that Smokeball has been a gamechanger for your practice, Anthony! Things like automatic time tracking and the automated templates save tons of time to drive that efficiency you speak of. Continuous improvement is a top priority, and we welcome any feedback you have.

I love the task lists! It is SO easy to create tasks and make them a priority. Adjusting how you view your tasks has been extremely helpful and a great feature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Smokeball?

There seems to be a lot of issues with the memos. My team has found that when we are writing memos, there is a lot of lagging. While this is just a glitch and not permanent, it is something that we have tried to have fixed several times. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Katharine Uhrich of Smokeball

Love hearing that you're more organized with Smokeball and it allows everyone to be on the same page at your firm! We appreciate your feedback on the memos--and your 5-star review.

"Smokeball - game changer for law firms"
5/5
What do you like best about Smokeball?

We are half way through our second year in using Smokeball, and it has completely transformed the way I manage cases and workflow. It’s not just another legal software—it genuinely makes day-to-day tasks more efficient and organized.

One of the biggest benefits for me is document automation. The ability to generate accurate, pre-filled legal documents in just a few clicks saves so much time and reduces the risk of errors. No more repetitive data entry—just streamlined, professional-looking documents every time.

Another standout feature is Archie AI. It helps analyze case information, provides useful insights, and even predicts next steps, which has been incredibly helpful for staying on top of matters. It’s like having an extra set of hands to manage the workload.

The task management system is also fantastic. It keeps everything organized, ensures deadlines aren’t missed, and makes collaboration with my team seamless. Assigning tasks, tracking progress, and staying on top of priorities has never been easier.

One thing I really appreciate is Smokeball’s search functionality. It’s incredibly fast and accurate—I can quickly find documents, emails, and case details without digging through endless files. This has been a huge time-saver.

Overall, Smokeball has made a real difference in my workflow. It’s reliable, intuitive, and packed with features that actually make my job easier. If you're looking for a way to improve efficiency in your practice, I’d highly recommend giving it a try. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Smokeball?

There are so few drawbacks with using Smokeball, the only thing I can think of is that the system doesn't seem to work great with Excel documents, though not being a tech person, I don't know if that is related to Smokeball or Excel. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Katharine Uhrich of Smokeball

Bonnie, thanks for your detailed 5-star review. It's fantastic to hear that Smokeball has transformed how you work. We love to hear that we're alleviating pain points and making life easier whether it comes to quick, accurate document creation or ensuring your don't miss a deadline. "Smokeball is an evolving tool for lawyers"
5/5
What do you like best about Smokeball?

There are multiple features I like about Smokeball. The automated forms make preparation of subpoenas etc a breeze. Frankly, you dont need a paralegal once you get Sb. The fact that SB tracks my time for me when I draft emails or work on documents within a matter, has simplied billing. SB billing has now added options for online payment by clients which is also helpful. Anything that makes it easy for clients to pay their bills is amazing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Smokeball?

SB could improve the bills to better describe the substance of emails and what money is in the trust account. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Katharine Uhrich of Smokeball

Thanks for your 5-star review, Juliet. Sounds like Smokeball saves you from hiring additional staff, which is amazing. Thank you for your feedback on how we can improve invoicing descriptions. I've pass this on to our product team.

"Smokeball works great for us"
5/5
What do you like best about Smokeball?

I find it a little strange that I never see Smokeball included in lists of common legal case management platforms. Because I’ve worked with several case management platforms, and I have yet to see one that is even remotely as robust as Smokeball. Smokeball is a full document management and document Storage platform as well as a case management platform, so it is able to do a lot more quickly than otherwise would be the case. For instance, the integration with Outlook is great. Tagging an email with a specific matter is so much easier and quicker than it was in Clio. Although I still don’t think you can tag multiple emails with the same matter as a bulk function. That’s something that under certain circumstances would be extremely helpful.

The timekeeping function alone is probably worth the cost if you need timekeeping in your practice. Obviously, this would not be the case if timekeeping was not important, but when it is, it’s amazing because it captures so much more than you would capture yourself if you were doing it by yourself. And it saves a ton of time. It also provides a much more reliable result than reconstructing something after the fact.

I think the internal communication portal is extremely useful and easy to use. We use that all day all the time. The task function is good as well, in the integration with the Outlook calendar is great. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Smokeball?

I will say that there are some things that it cannot do -- or instance, we have a separate Smokeball folder on our Dropbox where we put Smokeball documents that have to be downloaded from another source before they can be imported to Smokeball. Smokeball has improved this issue by creating a PDF to Smokeball option from print menus from anything you can print. But there are still other things, like scanning software that do not go straight into Smokeball. You have to save it on your computer or in Dropbox and then import it into Smokeball. Not a huge deal, but one more step.

There is a way to file documents online using Court systems like PACER and Odyssey directly from Smokeball. However, if you have exhibits to those documents, you will have to do that separately.

If you are using a particular function of a Smokeball matter, you cannot use another function in that matter at the same time. For instance, if you are inputting information on the names and addresses of defense counsel in a matter, you cannot open up another window for that same matter and look for an email or a letter from that counsel to obtain that information. You have to stop what you’re doing with inputting the data, close that window, and then open up another window in that matter to get the information and then reopen the first window to input the info. Very bulky.

Because SB documents are generally stored in the cloud, you can't open a large file like a video immediately. The file has to download from the cloud before it opens, and that can take some time, depending on the size of the file. And while that’s happening, you can’t open up any other files in that matter. In fact, I think you may not be able to open anything else in Smokeball while waiting for a file to download. And if you get anxious, and start opening up multiple large files, it can take forever to get anything done. You would then have to cancel those downloads before you do anything else. So large files like videos you can keep on Smokeball but if you need them immediately, you should also have them stored on your hard drive so you can open them up immediately.

Another quibble I have is that the memo function and Smokeball is extremely clunky. Clio’s memo function was much better and cleaner and easier to use.

Also, Smokeball is not particularly visually compelling. For instance, I like larger icons and images, and Functions for certain things as opposed to having to look at small print all the time. Smokeball is a small print platform. That’s a quibble not a major criticism, but if I was doing my own case management platform, I would have the functionality the robust functionality of Smokeball and combine that with The aesthetics of maybe a Cleo or something else. But until I invent my own platform, I’ll probably stick with Smokeball.

Finally, there's no way to collaborate with another firm that has Smokeball unless both firms have the same license. There's a firm I collaborate with often that has SB, but we can't collaborate like we could with Dropbox. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Katharine Uhrich of Smokeball

Jordan, thanks so much for your thorough and detailed review! We love partnering with clients like you who are power users and just as excited about legal technology as we are. We've shared your review with our product team so they can review these feature suggestions. So happy to hear that Smokeball is the robust legal solution you need to run your firm.

What do you like best about Smokeball?

It is very easy to use. It is greater for generating invoices and tracking time, and it is pretty good for document management. We use it daily Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Smokeball?

Does not automatically save. We have had some issues with Smokeball losing documents where there are multiple versions of a document with it sometimes reverting to earlier drafts. Also, its search function is not great. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Katharine Uhrich of Smokeball

Thanks for your feedback, David. As you mentioned, we love client suggestions so we can improve and evolve. Love to hear that you're finding Smokeball user-friendly, automatically tracking your time, and generating accurate invoices.
