Their type-ahead and validation services will fix zip code and city mis-matches. They also provide geo-coding. **What do you dislike about Smarty?** Useless if you want to validate a physical address that is not deliverable by the USPS (for example, parcels without buildings). I wish there were a way to have Smarty validate street names and cities and ignore street numbers (and have their type-ahead work this way too). **What problems is Smarty solving and how is that benefiting you?** Smarty helps our customers type in addresses into our product faster. We were able to get up and running within minutes. Using the hooks with other online services has been fairly easy with a little trial and error. We're able to get 99% of our addresses verified using the API calls via Zapier. The pricing puts it high in the value-to-use category. All of their tools are self-explanatory and need very little handholding. **What do you dislike about Smarty?** Sometimes addresses just don't work via SmartyStreets, but USPS and/or a maps/search engine can find it. The "unstructured" list lookup is pretty hit and miss. **Recommendations to others considering Smarty:** If you are still manually validating addresses, stop and sign up for this. Part of my job is to clean up large files with addresses before importing them into the CRM. A great tool to use to verify a single address. We have less returned mail since using the tool. Also we needed the county added for our CRM for territory management. **What do you dislike about Smarty?** Some addresses are hard to cleanse when abbreviations are used such as Hwy or Cty. These then are not found in Smarty. **Recommendations to others considering Smarty:** I recommend Smarty if you have large files with addresses to be cleansed. While we went with Smarty because it relies on the USPS database, there are holes, and they take a longer time than we would like to update their database. I like that their suggestion includes apartment numbers. **What do you dislike about Smarty?** Customer service is not very helpful. They don't have good email etiquette. I plead to them for help and they give me a one-sentence reply, "I will need the cvv code first, I can retry the card after." I asked the rep for a name and got this response: "My name is not necessary, nor am I obligated to provide this to you." If you like dealing with a company that talks that way to your client, it's entirely your call. I also don't like the way they count "lookups." Yes, you can add a delay or character count to trigger each lookup but I wish they changed their lookup counting method. When I saw X number of lookups on the pricing page, I didn't think they count every keystroke as a new lookup. I was assuming 1 lookup = 1 address lookup. Their response to that was "You can reduce the number of calls made by putting a delay after the user stops typing before the call is made. We recommend a 0.3 second delay. So if the user is typing, the calls aren't made until after the user pauses and waits for the suggestions to show up." Unless you add a delay, you are charged for every keystroke for the same address? On the pricing page that you see before purchasing our Autocomplete service, there is this FAQ posted: "What is a lookup? Each time you query our US Autocomplete Pro API with a portion of an address, it counts as one lookup. (The number of address suggestions we return doesn't matter.) You choose how often to query the API. We have clients that send a query for each keystroke as a user enters their address. With this method, entering an address might consume around ten lookups." The way our Autocomplete API works, is that each keystroke entered in the address field sends a lookup request to our API. That is how the list of addresses are served in the response that is displayed to the user. That is why 1 keystroke = 1 lookup. Since the API request can be customized to a single ZIP Code, to the entire United States, or biased based on location, the amount of queries necessary to find a single address can vary widely. We believe it is most fair to charge customers on a per API lookup basis rather than a per complete address basis. We are literally counting the amount of times you hit our API.
