I am a recent hire at a large university and one of my main tasks is running a program that requires the collection of student applications. SmarterSelect made it so easy to step into my new role and begin the work for my program ASAP. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

We had an issue where a student's professor was unable to receive the emailed reccomendation request for whatever reason, so the professor had to email me the document directly. While I was able to go into the application and mark it as received, I didn't see that I was able to upload the document to the application, which would have been helpful in keeping all of the materials/information together. The interface is clean and intuitive, and I'm incredibly impressed with the support documentation and staff availability via help chat for problems or questions that don't have support documentation available yet. There are a ton of useful features designed with application/selection processes in mind, many of which I haven't even had the opportunity to use yet. As I've been designing the committee application and evaluation processes I've been working on this summer, I've hit a bunch of unforeseen roadblocks requiring workarounds -- program application forms using cycles don't allow applicants to view their applications after submission. Programs sharing a common application can't individually set visibility settings for questions on that common application. Provider-level questions cannot be set viewable by evaluators or applicants, so items added to applications by admins must be added as applicant-level questions, thus opening them to potential editing by applicants. Question types and options settings are very limited and pared-down in comparison to SurveyMonkey, which we previously used to run these processes. SmarterSelect has a lot of excellent features, but it really seems designed for one very specific, very simple type of application and evaluation process, with very little wiggle room in it.

In addition to the things that just can't be done, there are a lot of opportunities to improve administrative quality of life that I hope they take advantage of -- I'd love to be able to export application data for a program in .xlsx, and for the applicants selected prior to export to not automatically deselect after I've exported so I can easily select the same group again to export their file attachments. Ability to sort on multiple columns when viewing applicants or programs would also be amazing (and is basic functionality in so many other platforms) -- right now, I can't fully alphabetize a list of names correctly. Let us set a default view for the applicant overview page for a program! Make exports download directly from the page! Can the Apps Submitted column, when added to the view for the Programs page, be conveniently linked to the applicants summary for that program like the Total Apps column is? They're small things, but when you're wrangling over 300 applications to 13 simultaneous programs, they start to add significant bulk to the workflow.

All in all, I believe in SmarterSelect -- the more I learn about it and the more it develops as a software tool, the better it will get -- and it could be so, so good! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It would be nice to be able to make the forms a little more personalized and be able to change styles of the apperance of what the applicant sees. Being able to change up the apperance would be able to ensure the applicant is using a more current version of the form.
