Skillpanel really helps shift HR from a generic, or even vague, approach to a clear and consistent skills-based approach. Additionally, Skillpanel can also be used for employer branding. We live in times when candidates are increasingly interested not only in cash compensation, but in the total package. Having a tool that helps employees or potential employees understand where they are now, what they still need to reach their goals, and the clear steps to get there is truly valuable. While the tool is amazing, and the idea behind it is great as well, a similar tool with stronger AI could end up monopolizing the space. Sometimes the tool also feels like too much: there are too many tabs, and it can get confusing. What I appreciate most about SkillPanel is the strong level of engagement it creates around defining and maintaining organisational skills. Even with this breadth of functionality, the system remains intuitive and easy to use for both HR teams and managers. Implementation and integration with existing HR systems also feel relatively straightforward, which helps the platform fit naturally into current workflows rather than operating in isolation. Customer support has been responsive and helpful as well, especially during setup and the early stages of use, making adoption smoother. Overall, SkillPanel improves organisational readiness for succession planning by making talent and skill information more accessible and actionable, and by supporting more informed workforce and talent decisions. One challenge, though, is that in organizations where several systems are used in parallel, it can sometimes take extra time to record comments or updates in SkillPanel. This is mainly a result of working across multiple tools, rather than a limitation of the platform. In addition, as a learning organization, we need to align other documents and internal processes with the system to use it effectively. SkillPanel tackles the problem of fragmented, one-dimensional skill assessment by offering a structured and transparent view of skills across the full employee lifecycle. Rather than depending solely on individual opinions or managerial judgment, it brings together self-assessments, learning efforts, and manager input. This combination helps reduce cognitive bias and provides a clearer, more realistic picture of actual capabilities. One of the main advantages is that identified skill gaps can be linked directly to relevant training and learning courses. That connection makes individual development more focused, practical, and better aligned with real organisational needs. Organisations also often find themselves considering temporary or external hires to cover short-term demands. With skill mapping and detailed skill profiles, SkillPanel helps uncover and use existing internal skills across teams. This is reinforced through visible skill maps, individual progress tracking, and recorded certifications that employees earn over time. What do you dislike about SkillPanel? My main concern is the risk of overcomplexity. SkillPanel offers a very granular overview of skills, high number of features, and sophisticated models but I feel they could become difficult to navigate for some less tech-savvy stakeholders. The challenge is often not collecting more skills data, but making it truly actionable, understandable and aligned with strategic business priorities. Although it also largely depends on the data work done beforehand on skills taxonomy and mapping, having everything structured in one single source of thruth already makes a big difference.
