Sketchup is extremely useful for my company's work in acoustic analysis; we use it primarily for building models for CATT, which is a program for simulating the acoustic environments of spaces we design, such as concert halls and theaters. The extensions make it easy to import preexisting 3d models from programs like Revit or Rhino so that we can simplify them in SketchUp, then export them for analysis in CATT. My coworkers and I (who primarily work in Revit) also have a hard time extracting information from SketchUp models. It saves us an incredible amount of time, since the alternative would be to completely redraw the model using CATT (which is much less intuitive than SketchUp). The fact we can can draw all of our different casework options we offer in house and can just drag and drop is one of the biggest time savers! Also with the ability to share components - we can keep them on our work shared drive and any employee can access. This has created a nice sense of consistency with our drawings! It can be a little tricky to navigate sometimes because of all the features - BUT the amount of resources that are available at any given time REALLY saves me. In my line of work, I design a lot of laboratories and many of our employees don't know how to read blueprints (as expected - it's not their job!). But with the help of sketchup, I am able to show them what they are getting before we lift the hammer. Prior to Sketchup, there were many times we had to go back in after we thought we were complete because there was a misunderstanding between the lab folks and our technical team. With the software, all of that isn't an issue anymore - they get to see a preview of their new spaces. I wish I had kept track of the amount of money it has saved us already in the past few years! I am able to train employees on how to use it in a couple days, and then they are able to quickly create models. Modifications to existing models is also extremely easy and versatile. It's my go to tool for developing geometry and incorporating all the AEC industry elements into a single light model that has the ability to set up scenes, render internally and export CAD data for drafting. With the use of on the fly groups and component families, the user can create their own adaptive heirarchy that matches their mindset. With the use of Layout, you can create useful presentation drawing sets, but not for fully detailed drawing sets. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about SketchUp? It's not for drafting and is not a true parametric or BIM tool. You can make it work, but expect there to be some effort on the user's part. There is a way to add parametric elements but that is on the developer's side. Responsive customer support, user interface, plugins, "layer" management, "BIM" options, 3D Warehouse and how much easier it is to create your own components if the specific products are not available. What do you dislike about SketchUp? Sometimes it can be a bit too simple but again with plugins there are workarounds. I wish it was more conversational with Revit in that files could be converted not just from the Revit side. What problems is SketchUp solving and how is that benefiting you? One problem that I believe is still in the process of being solved is using files over a network or cloud. I am on the M2 Pro mac mini and files keep quitting unless I bring them onto the desktop or another native file location. SketchUp representatives have been great in helping me diagnose and solve the problem. Also recently there has been a problem located among a small amount of mac users when using the paint bucket. Customer support has been great yet again with communicating and providing some steps that could help the situation while they track down the root of the issue. It is a 3D CAD program that is easy to learn and very intuitive. Also, it is flexible and "light" if you know how to use it. There are tons of plugins, which allow you to customize SketchUp for specific needs without losing any flexibility. It is possible to design almost anything in SketchUp, from Architectural and Civil projects to mechanics designs and electrical schemes. The Layout app is very good for transferring from 3D to professional 2D drawings or creating assembly instructions. It provides another intuitive tool for sketching in a professional way almost everything. What I love is how easy it is to install. I have been using it since 2005 and have never had difficulty learning. There is a huge amount of documentation on the SketchUp sites, as well as communities and other sites. The support from Trimble is very good. Importing and exporting the models from the main CAD systems usually works well since we consider that Sketchup is not a solid parametric software and has limitations. I usually work very well with other CAD systems. Sometimes, I use it as the primary system to create something; other times, I use it to support other projects in other systems. I have used it often since 2005, primarily the free version, and I subscribed as soon as this service was available. Another thing I like about SketchUp is that new tools are constantly being developed, and now AI integration can increase the design possibilities in a short period of time. Also, I can't use some new features as a scan app on Android tablets. It would be great if we could have easy parametric tools. Simulating a parametric solution using the component's attributes is too complex. Another missing point is a PDM to manage the files and documentation created on the projects and versions. Optimization tools for cleaning the models before the final release could be helpful. I hate to set up my desktop again whenever I need to update the new Sketchup version.
