There are so many tools out there that claim to diagnose a website's accessibility, but so many of them do it poorly. With Silktide, it's obvious you're getting a deep dive. But as an added bonus, Silktide also scores us on three other major categories: Marketing, Content and User Experience. The interface is simple and easy to use, showing you what is 'wrong', why it's wrong and how to fix it. You can either ignore recommendations, carry out the necessary fixes or 'teach' Silktide to accept what it sees as errors - for instance unusual spelling or grammar. **What do you dislike about Silktide?** Silktide is a powerful tool and therefore it can sometimes be difficult to get to grips with for time-poor staff at my public sector organisation. It definitely becomes more effective and useful the more you know about it, so I would recommend users spend some time each week getting to know how it works. You get out what you put in! **What problems is Silktide solving and how is that benefiting you?** As said above, accessibility is now a legal requirement and not something public sector organisations can afford to take lightly. But we also have to consider our users, many of whom don't have advanced reading skills or perhaps have visual or cognitive issues, and Silktide helps us ensure our content is as optimised as possible for all users. ### 3. On-page issues such as broken links show you exactly where the broken link is, and there is an excellent description with examples explaining what the specific check means and how to fix it. They also link out to more detailed resources if needed. They also have great support, so you aren't just provided with the platform and left to figure it out on your own. You have someone who will continuously check in and ensure you are getting the most out of the platform. **What do you dislike about Silktide?** There isn’t anything I dislike; its' mainly based on your company's preferences and needs. I think the biggest thing is some features/checks are pretty surface-level, but I know that they are always continuing to look for ways to improve the platform and provide more for their customers. If you are looking for something robust that includes every level of data analytics tracking, SEO all in one place, etc., this platform might not be for you. This platform does cover A LOT, and you have quite a bit of customization. Some features that get less granular and are less customizable you’ll need to supplement with another platform. So all-in-all, it depends on your company’s needs and where you are in the process of implementing SEO, data analytics, as well as accessibility strategies and process within your company's workflow. **What problems is Silktide solving and how is that benefiting you?** Staff hours and ease of use to reduce the amount of time spent problem-solving for issues. Before Silktide, we would have to run most tests by hand as well as google and read through the lengthy WCAG guidelines to try and understand the issues we are looking for and trying to fix. Silktide makes it super easy by having everything in one centralized place, and they show you where the problems are. You don’t have to dig through code and run a bunch of tests in hopes that you find the problem. In the platform, you can inspect both on the visual section of the page and see where the issue is within the code. Lastly, if you are still struggling with certain checks and don’t understand them completely, you can always reach out to Silktide for live person assistance. ### 7. Having used Siteimprove for many, many years this key functionality was always missing. It is really refreshing to see it as a core feature in Silktide. While there are some advanced features I'd love to see with this functionality, the presence of it alone is a huge selling point. **What do you dislike about Silktide?** Having used Siteimprove in the past, the biggest issue I run into with Silktide involves custom policies. I've found it very difficult to create some advanced custom policies that were pretty straightforward with Siteimprove. That said, customer support has been wonderful whenever I have questions about how to do something. **What problems is Silktide solving and how is that benefiting you?** I started in a new role last year in a large company that didn't have a way to continually review and improve content quality. It's a feat to be able to serve up detailed, specialist data in a way that supports content designers and front-end developers whilst being accessible and supportive of non-specialists who need to update their content. The intuitive interface is great and the mobile testing functionality is unique. I'm looking forward to some of the features in development as I'm sure they will improve the experience further. **What do you dislike about Silktide?** Three months in and there's not much I dislike so far. Some bits of getting set up were a bit fiddly, including understanding the nuances of what gets scanned and having to dig into the data to ensure accuracy. Understanding potential scanning intricacies from the beginning would have been useful, but our Customer Success Manager has been fantastic, very helpful and supportive. Each and every question or issue was promptly addressed and solved with support - an excellent experience. **What problems is Silktide solving and how is that benefiting you?** Working in an organisation with specialist web teams and a large editor network of non-specialists, a really big challenge was getting a tool that could satisfy and support both. The deployment process and our Customer Success Manager have been fundamental to getting the tool set up and deployed effectively. The Silktide Academy plus live training sessions (online) have been useful and engaging for both audiences, they are certainly encouraging a renewed interest and focus across our editor network. It was also really important to have a tool that can cope with a large web estate broken down into lots of sections. Each issue is linked to the page on which it is detected, making reviewing it simplicity itself. It also has an associated WCAG error code and a brief description of what steps should be taken to remedy the issue. It is worth noting that with some of the more obscure aspects of WCAG 2.1 legislation, I did have to go further, researching outside the product, and on occasions talking to my developers to get a detailed understanding of what was actually causing a specific issue and how we might tackle it. But without Silktide to highlight the fault, and point us in the right general direction this would have been a much harder task, and these obscure issues would likely have gone unnoticed altogether. **What do you dislike about Silktide?** To be critical for balance against all the good things I could say, I found the lack of Academy content around Accessibility disappointing. There is an excellent introductory online course for beginners to the subject, but from the demonstration, I had formed the impression there was a range of in-depth learning tools in this area. I would also like to see a feature that allows exporting a report of the current issues; ideally, one that can be tailored, for example, by compliance level, grouping the A, AA, and AAA issues. A feature of this sort would allow me to quickly and accurately update the Accessibility Statement on our website without assembling this by hand from the data on the screen. **What problems is Silktide solving and how is that benefiting you?** One of the most powerful aspects of the product is the monitoring - I can be confident regular checks are happening in the background while I am getting on with the development of content and new projects. I can see the results of those checks immediately; I don’t have to schedule manual inspections each week or month and spend time myself going through the site trying to ascertain whether we have unknowingly generated a problem somewhere within our 2000+ pages. Silktide monitors our website against the latest standards, WCAG 2.1, so we are confident that we know how compliant we are against all legal requirements. Silktide also has some helpful flexibility; for example, it allows me to control the allocation of our page allowance. I can assign the majority to our main website and the remaining portion to a microsite. I can change how this configuration as my requirements vary. ### 45. We have been able to get more detailed insight into accessibility issues on our site and made others within the council aware of the importance of making the website accessible. It helped us a lot with updating our accessibility statement. With the previous tool we used, if we needed to update a phone number, we weren't able to find all instances on the website and often it resulted in the old number still being listed somewhere on the website. Silktide has made it so easy, we just go to the inventory section, search for that specific number and it tells us all the pages the number is on. We also have our own policies of inclusivity and accessibility. Silktide provides a robust, user-friendly solution that is scanning our entire web estate, with around 300 users across the organisation using the tool to get easy monitoring and deep insight, when required, to identify and fix problems. Easy reporting has made it easy to raise the profile of accessibility to all levels of the organisation in a transparent manner. There are other great features too - around quality, broken links, and SEO, but the real prize is accessibility. Some of our sites are now scoring close to 100% for compliance, and we are amongst the top fifty local authorities in the UK for the accessibility of our main council website. ### 49. I can see which issues I should ask our developers, designers and content designers to fix. The tool is easy to use at both the macro and micro level: - I can see an overview of the problems we need to fix. - My colleagues can easily delve down into the detail of the issues we need to fix. **What do you dislike about Silktide?** Nothing. There is nothing about Silktide that I would change. **Recommendations to others considering Silktide:** I’ve used all the other industry-leading website auditing tools. And this is by far the easiest to use with the most powerful insights. **What problems is Silktide solving and how is that benefiting you?** 1. Finding accessibility problems: from technical glitches to plain English and readability issues. 2. Made it easy to write our accessibility statement. 3. Finding grammar problems and typos, and broken links. 4.
