I found Modelsim to be better than various other simulators as it gives better control than ISE. I simulated different Verilog designs using it. It has always been my go-to. I did task-based and direct stimulus verification when I was training myself in college time. It was much better a simulator than ISE, in my opinion. Working on it for any sort of verification along with functional or code coverage is a great idea. Although I felt the user interface is little cluttered up for small screen sizes.
