"We have loved using Shorthand"

What do you like best?

I love how easy the platform is to use and how speedy their help service is to help (on the few occasions we have needed it). They have been super accommodating of us and are always willing to help! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

There are a few things we wish we have control over (such as how the responsiveness works and some custom styling), however I know on higher plans this is available, and shorthand . The other thing I have found challenging is that the pricing structure changes every year, this being said, shorthand has always been willing to help and find a plan to suit our NGO budget. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would highly recommend it. The team has been amazing over the 3 years we have used them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have moved our Annual Report to Shorthand which has been amazing and a really engaging way to engage our supporters. More recently we are using it for more digital assets that we are needing to be more engaging and something different for people for are being bombarded with NGO asks. "Great visual storytelling tool"

What do you like best?

It’s easy to use with simple guides (if needed) to on-board other team members. You can really push your creativity as the various options, especially tailoring content just for desktop AND/OR mobile, allow you to provide a unique experience for your users to consume your content/information. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The limited networks offered as sharing could be expanded, to truly reach the masses. Only one user can be editing at one given time so sometimes limits collaboration. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Ensure you have a well laid out content strategy and plan to produce high quality Shorthand pieces, as well as having enough design/creative support to really bring it to life. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are trying to ensure our users absorb crucial info and take real notice of the message in our storytelling. The benefit with Shorthand is the creative ways you can achieve this really ensures users retain that information. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Elegant interface, easy to use, and excellent customer support"

What do you like best?

For ease in creating custom multimedia storytelling experiences, Shorthand is the way to go. Their templates allow for elegant and simple stories that any novice could quickly master creating, as well as the option for more technically nuanced approaches to create slick and professional designs. But what has been as impressive as their platform is their customer support. They are always quick, efficient, and treat me and my team with personal professionalism that is often lacking from tech companies. Our early missteps received kind understanding and the support team immediately took the time to adjust things on the back end for us. I definitely recommend Shorthand, particularly for other cultural heritage institutions, like ours. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

We are very satisfied with Shorthand. One point our users mention is that they miss breadcrumbs that would easily direct them back to the previous story they were in when advancing through linked stories (rather than having to click back to the original tab). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Shorthand has provided us with an easy way to take our exhibition content and scholarly research and pair them with digitized cultural heritage collections to create engaging online stories for our the public. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful authoring tool yields beautiful results"

What do you like best?

Shorthand makes it drag-and-drop-dead easy to build beautiful web pages with photos, video, animation and more. Powerful customization tools keeps each piece looking fresh. And the customer service is fast, friendly and extremely helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The biggest downside is that it's outside of our standard editing workflow and CMS. Although Shorthand can do integrations, those go only so far. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Shorthand makes it possible for people who lack coding skills to nevertheless produce really beautiful and well-functioning multimedia web pages. This democratizes our digital production and allows us to produce beautiful work more easily and more quickly than before. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Easy to use tool for visual storytelling"

What do you like best?

It's easy to use for non-techy people, with very little training they can produce beautiful storytelling projects. If you have access to a graphic designer or know a little bit of code you can produce even more spectacular looking content that works a dream on mobile too. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Nothing. Whenever we have wanted to push the boundaries of what is possible with the tool the Shorthand support staff has always been supportive and their response time is super fast.

If there is one thing we would love the tool to have in the future it would be to have the ability for multiple editors to edit stories simultaneously as we often collaborate on stories with people in different countries, but there are ways around this so is not a big issue for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Get graphic designers to work on your Shorthands together with good content producers and you will create stand-out content. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For online storytelling, especially on mobile, you need the product to be easy to consume but also have enough interactive elements to make sure that the user stays and reads as much as possible. Shorthand gives you an incredible arsenal of versatile tools to produce engaging content and the fact that it does so without you having to rely on developers saves you money and enables your content creators to feel more ownership of the production process and in our experience has also led them to produce much more inventive content. Ultimately it saves us money and it allows us to produce better content that is easy to consume for our very diverse audiences.

We often collaborate with people who have very little experience with tech so the fact that Shorthand is so easy to learn how to use is great. We run workshops for human rights defenders where we teach them a lot of different communication tools and Shorthand is always one of the most popular ones!

Several of our Shorthand projects have won and/or been nominated for several awards. Our story called 'Visualizing Yemen's Invisible War' was shortlisted for the Information Is Beautiful Awards, which is one of the biggest data visualization prizes, you can have a look at it here: https://www.yemenpeaceproject.org/invisible Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Excellent & Prompt Support"

What do you like best?

As a student newspaper Shorthand has been a valuable aid in improving our digital media content and giving our editors more creative ways to present their articles. The guides created by Shorthand have been invaluable in bringing members up to speed with the best practice when using it. We have only ever had one small issue and support was quick and incredibly helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

We haven't found any downsides so far, completely satisfied with the experience so far. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The Wordpress editor that we use has its limitations when we want to present important stories/investigative journalism, especially when it requires a lot of media. Therefore Shorthand gives us the chance to fully realise projects. For example we published an investigative piece on how our University was withholding information despite freedom of information requests, and Shorthand gave us an excellent platform not only to present media but also data in a digestible way. "Sydney Opera House storytelling with Shorthand"

What do you like best?

Shorthand makes it easy for writers to share stories, but also for developers/designers to create exciting new audio-visual experiences. The amount of resource needed to develop original online stories can be daunting, but Shorthand shortcuts the otherwise prohibitive development process. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Downloading the raw page code was an important part of developing our stories, however this is no longer available in the standard plan we're on. This would make it easier for us to maintain code on our repositories/domains. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our own website has limitations with the CMS it uses. Shorthand allows us to bypass that to create interesting stories with heavily customisable components. At times, we've hit limits with this (from a dev perspective), but Jamie and the team have worked with us to create custom components and workarounds to help realise our otherwise unwieldy (creative) ideas. "Easy to use and amazing customer service"

What do you like best?

If you have an issue or just a question about what is possible or how one could make a desired outcome - just pop in a question and they get back to you with a solution almost before you press send! They really look after their customers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The mobile version could be better, smoother. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We make articles that needs more attention with Shorthand. Important issues that we want to raise and have people stop and actully get the message, see the fasts and either want to share with their friends, or be engaged enough to donate to make the world a better place. "The platform that brings digital storytelling to life"

What do you like best?

The platform allows the creation of agile stories - without cast amounts of programming and development work.

Bringing these elements to life is important - customers want an online experience, where they can be given an engagement to learn.

In control - under an agency model - everything costs. With Shorthand, the costs are fixed and we define the producer. This means we can match the stories, to the best storytellers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Load times can lag on bigger stories - but this may down more to our desire to create advanced published stories! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Able to react to events and opportunities in real time - making immersive content in a very quick speed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

The ability to create engaging content for our clients & the ability to wow clients by transforming their content. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I would like to have more freedom with the backgrounds on the sections, the ability to upload patterned backgrounds. To have body copy as an option on text over media. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For clients we are solving the issue a lot of them are having, the out dated .pdf'. Also bringing content online, shorthand has allowed Rostrum to develop our offering and provide more digital based campaigns. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Shorthand is ideal"

What do you dislike?

I have not yet encountered anything I dislike about Shorthand. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We can provide high quality online content to our students and teachers, which they find engaging. The main benefit has been not having to learn a web design programme or having to use HTML to produce our resources - we can focus on the content itself instead of the technical issues. "Shorthand Review"

What do you like best?

The very first time I was using Shorthand was when I created an awareness story for a non – profit organization and the perpetuators were literally overwhelmed about the way the story came out. They later used it on their website and television for awareness. I cant say much about shorthand because it is what every story teller needs. The illustration features, the audio are all overwhelming features as compared to most of the software in the category of shorthand. I also love the fact that new users are given free trial periods which helps them get familiar with the software. The ability to share the stories on ones emails is another good feature I cant help but use frequently when I want the stories to go further but also the free illustration video tutorials are an amazing feature that make shorthand stand out from the other software of its caliber. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I have really not found a lot of problematic issues with shorthand but if the operators or developers of the software could allow for a free version then more people especially school goers may get involved in using the application. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Sincerely speaking i have not found an application that helps one create multimedia versions of stories but also share them in an instant. Shorthand has been my pen and tool and i highly recommend this software to everyone out there looking for a story telling and writing software. Shorthand is just beyond that. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The biggest benefit i have got from this awesome software is that i have got improve my story telling techniques because i compose a great deal of stories for many organisations especially non profit organisations which usually do stories for awareness. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Fantastic Customer Service, Saved My Degree!"

"Excellent product and support"

"Love Shorthand - long may she reign!"

What do you like best?

The ease of use is key. Some features over the past year or so such as Set Focus have also helped to take some duplication about preparing content for mobile which is really helpful. Shorthand is fantastic at making good photos look great and great photos look amazing. It's so intuitive as a system that absolute beginners can design really compelling looking content in no time at all. It would be great if Shorthand were able to run more events and get some of the leading longform and Shorthand practitioners in the field to come along. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I'm not a huge fan of how scrollmation pictures appear on mobile. They can sometimes take up a fair amount of available space. I'd like to see a couple more basic templates and font choices available. Perhaps a sans serif font for standard text in the basic template would be great. Likewise, although it's great that we now a choice of font colours, some of them are quite weak/not bold enough, and the choice remains relatively limited. I'd also like more say as to where and how text appears in text over media sections and perhaps a choice of where exactly text could be placed in background scrollmation. Somtimes a narrower column might work best for certain photos, although I appreciate this would be harder work to code than just the left, centre and right options currently available. Perhaps more transition choices between reveal section photos would be fun. It would also be great to have a blurring/highlight tool available to have to rely less on Photoshop for those who don't have it or don;t have the skills for it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

it allows us to present and tell our stories in a dynamic and compelling way that our current CMS simply can't do. While we get both positive and negative feedback (rarely, but sometimes) on the way Shorthand looks and feels, the positive outweighs the negative by a distance. There are some really huge fans of the system at Cambridge Uni. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Deliver your best stories in an immersive way"

What do you like best?

We've a lot of stories to tell, and Shorthand uniquely gives us a single melting pot, allowing various production roles to work together in a truly collaborative sense. After the story narrative is nailed, there is very little we can't realise from a creative point of view. That's where the magic can happen. With your creative approach in draft, the format is inherently easy to get to grips with and simple transitions can be used to great effect. With the right story, and your reader in mind, Shorthand lets you wield and deliver your precious content in an absorbing and engaging way. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that you can't edit , easily, after go-live. Seems a little clunky. A few more formatting options inside the set themes would be a great bonus. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

We were keen to create a more immersive experience for our readers and the Shorthand platform allows us to do that with some elan and purpose. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Internally, our people love it - it's a lot of fun to use and encourages collaboration. Crucially, we're creating content experience away from delivering mere text, making our content more powerful, persuasive and more meaningful to our readers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Ricky Robinson of Shorthand

Thanks for the wonderful review!

Regarding editing after publishing, with our hosted solution it's as simple as clicking the republish button after you've made your edits. This is also true of our quick and easy "embed integration", which lets you integrate your Shorthand stories with your existing CMS with a simple copy-and-paste of a couple of lines of javascript.

With stories exported to your own hosting infrastructure, it's a similar case, unless you've made custom edits to your story after you've exported, in which case you'll need to reapply those edits. Unfortunately we can't control what happens to a story once it's been exported off our platform, and for that reason we highly recommend that any custom code or custom edits be added through the Shorthand editor rather than by hand after export.

Since your review, we've also added many new formatting options to the editor, resulting in greater flexibility and more direct control over some visual elements. Of course, custom themes are still a great way to apply your styles and branding.

We're glad your team is loving Shorthand!

"Turning digital storytelling up to 11"

What do you like best?

I like the dynamism, the beauty of the layout possibilities and the features that help a story come to life. This format allows us to add dimension (e.g. video, static shots, maps, etc.) that helps to give our stories the depth and beauty that is commensurate with the subject matter. We treat our stories and the people that we work with seriously - and we need a platform that can help us communicate that. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that you can't edit or make changes once you've published. Also, it would be great if you could manipulate font sizes in the body text. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Shorthand has been incredible so far - and we're just getting started. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Shorthand allows our stories to reach a broader audience. Shorthand makes our stories more visceral, and ultimately more powerful, which is important since we really want people to understand more about the work that UNDP does. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Ricky Robinson of Shorthand

Thank you for the great review!

I just wanted to jump in to say that making edits once you've published is as simple as making your changes in the editor and then clicking the republish button. Done! Of course, if you're hosting the stories on your own infrastructure and you've added custom code by hand after you've exported, then you'll need to re-apply that custom code. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you add any custom code through the Shorthand interface, then republishing your exported stories becomes trivial. Unfortunately, we of course have no control over what happens to a story once it's been exported from our platform.

Since your review, we've also added many formatting options to the editor, including the ability to more easily change the size of headers/titles.

We really appreciate that you took the time to leave us a review, and thank you for the kind words!

"Impeccable customer service"

What do you like best?

I had the pleasure of working with Shorthand's customer support team, as usual, a deadline was bearing on us and help received from Daniel Wolkowitz and Andrew Dekker was superb. Quick handling of requests from us, patient, calm, efficient and smart- thank you guys; you're an asset toShorthand, which is a great product that we have just started using and will continue to do so. What do you dislike?

I think there should be more flex on editing post going live. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For our brand, the challenge is to present highly technical content in an engaging and exciting way for the viewer to help bring to life complicated science that has incredible applications and ramifications in everyone's daily lives. The Shorthand platform helps us do that as well as adds a smart, clean and nicely laid out (yet different) way to lay out our content to complement our existing marcomms and highlight certain stories. Response from Ricky Robinson of Shorthand

Hi there,

We're sorry to hear you've had a less than satisfactory experience with Shorthand! This is certainly not the norm. As losing customers is a rare occurrence for us, especially where price has been a key issue (and never, as far as we know, due to the quality of our product!), we'd really appreciate if you can leave some more detailed feedback for us and our prospective customers, or get in touch with us directly via our support email. What was your use case for Shorthand, when did you use it, and what was it about the product that made you feel as though you weren't getting value from it?

Thanks for helping us to make Shorthand the best it can be!
