What do you like best about Shopify POS?
The best part about Shopify POS is it easy to use for our employees. The POS screen and process of checking out a customer is very intuitive.
It is also great that it is cloud based and we do not need an onstie server. It makes it so that we do not need IT specialists onsite at each of our store's locations to troubleshoot problems.
We love that Shopify POS integrates seamlessly with the Shopify E-commerce product and Marketplace connect. This allows us to use our store's inventory for the E-commerce inventory as well.
Love the one stop shop.. you can manage the POS and Web, and marketplaces from one interface. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What do you dislike about Shopify POS?
Where to start. Overall Shopify meets our needs, but it seems to be missing several obvious things:
1. The reporting is very lack luster. We pay an additional $30 a month to an app called better reports so that we can get the basic data we need. This type of basic and obvious reporting used to come included with our previous POS software.
2. You cannot integrate 3rd party merchant services with Shopify POS. So you have not choice but to pay the very high and non-compettive shopify merchant fees. We have thought several times about switchign POS and at some point as we grow, taht is our plan. We could save thousands by swithching to a POS software that allows us to use 3rd party merchant services like we used to with our previous software.
3. Hardware. Shopify forces you to use specific hardware and their software integartes with very few hardware options and they are the most expensive ones. So you will end up paying for the most expenseive hardware.
4. Hardware.. we have had our Shopify Tap and Chip card reader go out several times and then we've had to buy new ones. Once we were able to get Shopify to send us a new one for free. But that has not alwasy been the case. Fingers crossed the Tap and Chip reader does not got out on Black Friday.
5. Hardware.. Shopify POS has to use an Ipad... Ipads looks slick. but Apple releases new versions annually and new software updates. This makes it so ipads that are few years old may not be compatiable with teh shopify sofware and then you will need to buy a new ipad even though your current ipad still works great, it is just no longer compatibble with Shopify. that has happend to us and forced us to spend another $700 on a newer generation ipad.
6. Bluetooth... Shopify POS relies on bluetooth to connect many pieces of hte hardware to the POS software. This is great when it works, but we have found that bluetooth is not very reliable. I wish there was an option to have hardwired connections through USB instead Bluetooth. Several times, probalby atlesat two times a month we have to go the settings on our ipad, forget blue tooth devices, turn off the ipad, turn off hte hardware, turn them all back on and then reconnect them all. this is very annoying and very flustring to employees especially when customers are waiting to check out.
7. 3rd Party App.. there are many key pos features not included Shopify so you have to pay for several 3rd party apps. We pay a couple hudred dollars each month in 3rd party apps to do basic things such as; upload products using a CSV file, basic reporting, doing an inventory count, customizing barcode stickers to print out, time clock functionality so employees can clock and clock out, basic loyalty program/rewards tracking,
8. No time clock. We have to pay a 3rd party app for basic time clock functionality.
9. No Purchase order functionality. You cannot build purchase orders into shopify. So we use a google docs to track our purchase orders, items that are arriving, etc...
10. Shopify thinks about everything from an e-commerce lens first. POS seems to be an afterthought for them.
Overall, Shopify POS works for our business and we have stuck to it becasue it is a lot of work to switch and we're trying to grow and and improve our ecommerce side of the business. I have hope that Shopify will continue to improve their POS. I shouldn't write such a detailed review becasue I want Shopify to get more POS customers so that Shopify will focus on it more and continue to imrpove it. So I shouldn't be so transparaent, but my hope if that by posting my true thoughts and issues with Shopify POS the Shopify team will read it and work to improve these things.
