ShareX is a freeware programme designed to record either virtually (your computer screen) or self-record over your webcam. You can choose only one visual and sound input per recording. This means you can choose to record your screen (virtual) with either your voice or the virtual sound, or choose your webcam with virtual or voice recorder options. I find it incredibly useful to make screen and voice combination recordings for professional use in creating my teaching materials and for qualitative research.

For example, I record presentations on my screen with my voice script that I can send to students I supervise. I also record work tasks for team collaboration where you have to explain admin or research processes or protocols that others should follow in the same manner. It makes it easy for team members or students to review in their own time. Since you can save your downloaded video content, it's easy to share using Google Drive or Dropbox. Some files are small enough to email directly while maintaining video quality. The size can be preset before you record.

I also apply ShareX to screenrecord analysis I conduct on ATLAS.ti (a brilliant software programme you can use to facilitate analysing qualitative data including text (Microsoft Word or PDF), audio, images and video files). I record analysis processes in case I want to repeat the same processes later. It also captures processes for team collaboration to ensure all team members follow the same procedure for quality and trustworthiness.

Because screen recording options are limited to screen vs webcam and virtual sound vs voice recorder, it means that you cannot toggle between options in the same recording. You also have to remember to adjust your preferences on settings or face repeating a recording once you realise which settings you needed! Quick tip: once you set up, check the settings by doing a quick test recording to replay and make sure you have the correct set-up! The recorded videos are saved with excellent compression, maintaining high quality. There is no need to reprocess them in other software to reduce file size, which is expected, for example, in screen recorders for mobile devices. More than that, the software doesn't affect the computer's performance at all when opened, and it still has excellent tools like OCR, sharing, and reverse search already included in the application. Some settings, such as adding new audio sources, require plugins to be downloaded and installed. Furthermore, not all configuration menus are intuitive. It is often necessary to turn to the user community to learn how to activate a mode or configure a recording correctly. ShareX is on the right track, but improvements are still needed. ShareX has excellent performance and makes recorded files available almost instantly after recording in very well optimized video files. While many screen recorders slow the device, ShareX does not negatively affect the use of other software even when recording the screen for relatively long periods. Small details bother me, such as the need to configure the application so that the recording includes sound and the fact that the buttons for pausing and stopping the recording are hidden when recording the entire screen or are hidden below the taskbar when an application in a maximized window is being recorded.
