We were able to eliminate waiting times at the end of each sprint (which were usually very challenging as we deploy a lot of changes on a last day) with automatic CI scaling. All previous solutions were operating on fixed computing resources and we ended up wasting development time while developers were waiting for their build to finish. With Semaphore this is no longer the case - tests are run immediately after code has been pushed. Another benefit was more powerful machines resulting in faster test runs, we have found out that in our case difference between CircleCI and SemaphoreCI was about 20% faster test runs. With all that being said we are now paying 38% of what we would be paying somewhere else and experience is great. What do you dislike about Semaphore? - Tests runs were not evenly split based on a test run time and we have had to rely Knapsack on our test distribution - Getting non tech savy person to manage billing is challenging as it is required to setup a Github account in order to log in and manage projects - Their target group are developers and it makes hard to sell project to any business person. Almost all materials are about development, I haven't seen any meaningful material on why you should consider using Semaphore instead of Azure Pipelines/AWS CodePipeline/ Jenkins. And what business will get from their faster build times - Marketing materials are not updated to match current product shape and instead feature outdated "pipeline" screenshots - this is not looking very professional. It's easy to work with, providing a good overview of what's happening. Detailed billing insights make it easy to identify your costs. Docker support is what it makes shine compared to the version 1. Thanks to that, there's so much flexibility. It works for our most complicated setups, running only if necessary for the specific subtree. What do you dislike about Semaphore? Sometimes it's a bit inconsistent with the time it takes to restore things from the cache, varying from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Occasionally, we've experienced some downtimes, but it was all solved very quickly with the customer support. It's a pity that there's no automated process for migration from the version 1, as we have a lot of projects running on the older version and an automation would help us greatly (even for just simple use cases). Also, it would be nice to get a better overview of the deployments. In version 1, it was very nice and we could see it completely separated from the tests, but in version 2, we see that it's all passed, but actually when you click on the workflow, it's not, because it's still deploying. Semaphore helps us to execute tests that are to expensive to execute in our own machine. We don't have to run all the tests every time a new feature is developed. We just push the branch and Semaphore takes care of the rest. Then, we can see in the logs if something broke in our application. Also, semaphore makes the deploy of whatever branch we want too easy.
