"Convenient, affordable web filtering"

What do you like best about ScoutDNS?

Everything was easy, including the setup which took very little time. We've been using it for a couple of years now, and the management is a breeze. Glad to have all our subnets using ScoutDNS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ScoutDNS?

Whitelisting sites/IPs can take some time before going into effect, but I realize this is somewhat unavoidable and dependent on cache settings, so it's hardly a complaint. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is ScoutDNS solving and how is that benefiting you?

We used to use Websense, which was okay, but having one less application to have to administer on a server is always a win in my book. The cloud dashboard makes it possible and super easy to manage everything DNS-related from anywhere. I am looking forward to hopefully using the relay feature that they have advertised recently. "Good solution for the budget conscious"

What do you like best about ScoutDNS?

Easy/quick to setup and was simple create some rules to protect from the most egregious websites. We particularly like that our "public" wifi is now guarded from porn and malware. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ScoutDNS?

There can be some false positives and because of DNS caching, it can take some time to enable access to important sites. In particular, enabling adware essentially disabled Google since every link has some click tracking which was blocked by ScoutDNS. Looking forward to testing the cloud relay! What problems is ScoutDNS solving and how is that benefiting you?

"This service has served us well for several years"

What do you like best about ScoutDNS?

For the most part this service is set it and forget. We have had no major issues with the platform. With any service of this type there will be false possitives for you org, but they are quickly sorted out. It is rare that we receive a whitelist request these days.

The GUI is much improved over the GUI when we first signed up and I greatly appreciate that. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ScoutDNS?

I really do not have anything that I dislike about the service. It simply does what it says it will do. If it did NOT work, I would certainly let it be known here Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering ScoutDNS:

take time to plan out the deployment - understand that in my experience you are always going to have false possitives. Support has been very responsive to request when made. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is ScoutDNS solving and how is that benefiting you?

This system is protecting our Guest Network and Private networks. At peak times we may have as many as 4000 users on the network, and this handles the request without problem. I do suggest that you create rules in your firewall to restict DNS access to only these servers or bright minded kids can circumvent. We have also blocked VPNs on the network as best as possible. What do you like best about ScoutDNS?

Installation and configuration is a snap.

Works with both static and dynamic external IP addresses (via DDNS service),

Easy to configure content categories and block/allow exceptions.

Able to manage several client sites from one dashboard, and seamlessly switch between client configs.

Non-profit pricing is about 1/3 the cost of a comparable content filtering solution, without sacrificing filtering capability

Questions are always answered promptly by the excellent support team at ScoutDNS

Able to set up secondary users to manage specific client sites (categories, exceptions)

Social media blocking is a single click, so blocking facebook or instagram is not the typical whack-a-mole problem Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ScoutDNS?

Things that I would like to see improved, realizing that this is an extenal service, and not a firewall:

Reporting features - sometimes it's nice to know WHO made the content request, rather than just the external address that submitted the request. Kind of like the reporting you might get from a firewall.

Allowing different users to be subject to different content filtering restrictions (like bypassing safe search for teachers, but forcing safe search for students). I believe this is possible for different subnets, but many orgs use a single subnet for all users.

What problems is ScoutDNS solving and how is that benefiting you?

Problems that we can solve with ScoutDNS are:

- extreme content (pornography and hate) is easy to block

- time wasting social media sites are easy to block

But the best thing about ScoutDNS is that I don't have to worry about it; it just works.

Setting up the system with just the defauts setting applied is a great starting point for protection. If a tweek is needed, it is easy to add the allowed or restricted site to a list for fine tuning the firewall to your specific needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
