In response to your wish that "gala auction" have the option to be called something else, that title only appears under the site settings for admin. You and your team can really just think of it as "live event" rather than a gala if that's helpful. There is nowhere the public would see the word "gala" if you didn't want them to -- you can customize the link text and header text for each button on your homepage, each public-facing page, and all the text in between.
