What do you like best?

All the features that it includes for proper analyses, well logs, seismic and reservoir characterization among others. To have a full suite of functions makes the software one of the most complete tools for geologists and geoscientists Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It has some many features in the main window that makes it a little overwhelming for new users when they don't have experience. The main interface is not the most friendly and requires several weeks of practice to have a certain skill level. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Get to know all its features for an improved experience for reservoir characterization. If you are a new user try to spend enough time to learn all of its features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I like the strong modeling integration of Petrel from petrophysics, seismic interpretation, geology, reservoir engineering, and geophysics. It has the ability to integrate all kinds of data types and make the good benifit of interpretation. I also like the very impressive visual feeling in 3D. It is striking to inset a plot of Petrel into my presentation or paper.

I can quickly test my idea by editing the model, run simulation (with ECLIPSE or INTERSECT), and see the results. There is seldom a software can do everything in the life of E&P and also display results as good as for a peer reviewed paper. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

When Petrel crashes, much of the hard work are lost, even with the auto saving scheduled for every couple of minutes.

Petrel can't interpolate the property grid from one fault model to another. If I edit one fault model for a little bit, remove/add/edit some faults, for example, I have to do the property regeneration or interpolation by my self.

The help document is not very clear. Sometimes it is very hard to find relevant help manual.

It seems Petrel has not handled very well with truncated faults (in saving the model and send to ECLIPSE for simulation). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you really want to understand the subsurface in 3D, you need Petrel, the amazing integrating modeling and interpretation tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Geomodeling: seismic interpretation, structural modeling, fault modeling, and property modeling (variogram analysis and petrophysical modeling). We use it to do basin-scale characterization with production and injection wells. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Requires a lot of resources: hardware. Of course, for a good graphic the computing requirements are very high. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It is useful in most of the situations. I would recommend it only for modeling and simulation cases Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Petrel is an excellent tool for geoscientists overall, the fact that you can interpret seismic data while working with well log information provides accurate subsurface models. Plus, the fact that you can use SIS, OBM and MPS modeling makes your geological model derive from the standar layer strata models. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that much the seismic attributes available in the software. Also it is really expensive because it is a Schlumberger product, but for big companies or universities this shouldn't be an issua compared with what you get for with the program. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would recomend you use the training programs, petrel is not a complicated program, however since it has so many funcitionalities it can be overwhelming when using it for the first time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As I said petrel is an excellent tool both for seismic interpretation and specially for 3D reservoir models, in both conventional and unconventionals. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

It is an excellent modulator when carrying out some geological exploration, since it gives you the minimum properties of the deposit such as porosity, permeability among others, factors that are of great importance at the time of the simulation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

the disadvantage of it is that it is not capable of representing the characteristics of the deposit itself, other software must be integrated to complete the tasks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

excellent product for geology and oil companies. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

What do you like best?

I am fairly new in the business, but I found using Petrel a little bit easier compare to other programs (like Paradigm and DSG). Also, because Petrel is an older program, it looks like they are more experienced, so Petrel is pretty comprehensive. Also, their supports are really good and helpful. I enjoyed their courses too. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Since they are an older program, the models and windows (like well correlation window) look a little old compare to other new programs (like Paradigm). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using Petrel in oil&gas exploration. The company is really experienced in the industry. So, if there is any problem, they quickly solve for you. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I have used Petrel for almost a decade and have enjoyed the effort put in by the software provider to stay current with developments in the oil and gas industry.

I very much like that the tool has evolved from being predominantly a niche three-dimensional earth modeling platform to a single source integrated subsurface evaluation environment.

For a small petroleum exploration and production company with potentially limited resources to patronize many software providers, it is possible to perform full subsurface evaluation, from seismic interpretation to reservoir simulation in Petrel. Pretty awesome! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It does take a while for newbies to get used to the many functionalities in the tool. This may sometimes appear overwhelming, especially without a tutor or guide to provide initial direction.

The user manual is however very helpful in resolving this challenge. My recommendation would be to be patient as an initial user and follow the manual step-by-step. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I definitely recommend getting this tool, not just for it's amazing functionalities but also for the vast amount of support available both from the provider and in the industry. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Three dimensional geological model construction for upstream oil and gas fields.

I have over the years used the tool to build static 3D models which where used for fluid flow simulation and design of field development plans for major capital projects.

In other cases, the subsurface models were used to manage already producing fields and respond to subsurface related inquiries. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
