What do you like best?

I generally have good experience with SAS/IML. Graphical User Interface is very friendly and helps simplify pipeline development, documentation, and communication. and can even help with coding. Built-in statistical methods are sufficient for most daily tasks. The program's ability to handle big data is very impressive. I once used SAS/IML on a 50 million row data set and it has absolutely no problem. The outputs look very good, too, and are usually suitable for reports/publications. Documentation is very extensive and has very good examples to follow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The IML coding language is a bit awkward to pick up because it is so different from common programming languages. The beginner coding statements are not too hard to pick up, but writing your own macro is very difficult. Pricing is very expensive, too. This makes it impossible to use SAS/IML for personall purposes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If your company/university is willing to pay for a license, SAS/IML is a great option for data analysis. Otherwise, I would not recommend this program because of its pricing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have used SAS/IML to do research about data analysis in cancer. The data set had about 50 million rows but the program's performance was very good. The outputs look very aesthetic, too. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Just the sheer volume of data you can analyze in a relatively quick manner. SAS made it easy to link, combine, and analyze multiple tables at the same time. Also being able to use multiple coding languages made it easy to get things done if one were more efficient that another. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Very expensive. I wasn't the one paying for it, but I know that our department had to make a lot of tough decisions regarding how many people could use it, and for what purposes. Also, the contracts were detailed and it required a lot of red tape to get approved for so much time. It's also difficult to learn everything so I felt that I was missing out on a lot. Even after going to training classes, it really requires a lot of hands on work to get REALLY good at using SAS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

For enterprise purposes, it is as good as it gets. Expensive, but most likely worth the cost. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Mostly used it for data modelling, scrubbing, and analysis. The scrubbing was quite straightforward, but there were more modeling and analysis tools than I knew what to do with. It was also difficult to explain to the business units what was going on with some of the more intricate tools, and having some sort of laymen guide to SAS would have been helpful. What do you like best?

pretty much consistent w/ the rest of the SAS sytem, syntax-wise (albeit you need to understand matrices). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

unfortunately it is a seprarate SAS module; ideally it should be in Base/Foundation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

not so much a problem vs. a task. i use it to generate species/population NEXUS (matrix) files for later graphing, from Excel tabular data for my client. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Having worked on SAS for more than a decade, I have seen how things have progressed from base SAS to IML. IML offers you the versatility of say python pandas, with speed and scale of SAS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It still isn't as easy to learn. While it forks from SAS macro and almost copies constructs from open source. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I guess, as long as your organization is able to procure the license and you're able to manage the initial learning curve, IML helps in ton of ways to churn out business solutions. It's way more structured than any open source alternative and the support is unmatched. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Market Basket Studies, Next Best Offer, Client Retention, Attrition analysis. The ability to work with various cuts of data is something that stands out. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

SAS/IML provides simple syntax and an extensive function library make it easy to translate mathematical formulas into statistical programming statements. I can implement custom analyses for a variety of applications and even build your own module library. I can easily share your programs and libraries by writing packages, and download programs written by others. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

You can find optimum values for objective functions, subject to constraints. But to do so, you will need to know how to use the software. Easy-to-read documentation would be a great asset. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

The ability to program SAS using Proc IML to be able to verify the performance and behavior of various techniques without having to sort through pages and pages of output was crucial for my research. Combining IML with macros allowed me to program a flexible program to check multiple approaches in a variety of settings. The ability to work easily with vectors/matrices as arrays of varying dimensions was very helpful. I recommend this to others regularly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

At least in the older version that I was using, floating point issues made comparisons where counts might be equal to each other very unreliable. I ended up having to program in a "fudge" factor to ensure that might count comparisons were accurate. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you know SAS programming, using SAS/IML for advanced diagnostic work is a great way to expand the usefulness of SAS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For my statistics research, I was trying to compare existing statistical methods to my proposed approach. IML provided a platform to correct each of these in one program and control the output for ease of reporting. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

This feature allows you to perform matrix operations in SAS, which can be necessary in data analysis Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

You can pass R statements directly in SAS using IML, but otherwise the syntax is not intuitive at all (even if you are very familiar with base SAS) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Consider passing matrix operations to another application, like R, and joining the results with a shell script Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

SAS IML is the only way to perform matrix operations in SAS, which may be necessary in certain analyses Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
