The ability for students to construct linear model analysis of the methods covered in class without simply relying on preset functions in SAS or other software. What do you dislike about SAS/IML? The learning curve can be a bit steep for students not as familiar with basic programming skills like loops and linear algebra skills like matrix mulitplication.
