What I like best about SAP Responsible Design and Production is how it helps bring sustainability tracking and regulatory compliance into a more structured and measurable process instead of handling it manually across multiple systems.

For our team, one of the biggest advantages has been the visibility into packaging data, material usage, and environmental impact reporting. Earlier, gathering this information for compliance and internal reporting required a lot of spreadsheet-based tracking and coordination between operations, procurement, and compliance teams.

The platform also makes it easier to monitor extended producer responsibility (EPR) requirements and evolving sustainability regulations across different regions. Having centralized reporting and traceability reduced a significant amount of manual effort during compliance reviews.


We also appreciated the analytics and reporting capabilities because leadership teams now have better visibility into sustainability metrics and packaging optimization opportunities.

Overall, the platform helped us improve transparency, reduce manual compliance tracking, and support broader sustainability initiatives in a more organized and scalable way.

One of the main challenges with SAP Responsible Design and Production is the complexity involved in the initial setup and data preparation process. Since sustainability and compliance reporting depend heavily on accurate packaging, material, and supply chain data, implementation required significant coordination across multiple teams internally.

We also found that some workflows and configuration options have a fairly steep learning curve, especially for users who are not already familiar with SAP ecosystems or sustainability compliance processes.


Integration with existing ERP and supply chain systems was valuable overall, but the process still required careful mapping and validation to ensure reporting accuracy across different datasets.

Basically, it’s cloud software. It’s meant to help companies avoid messing up the planet with plastic wrappers and box packaging by keeping better track of their packaging and waste. With governments rolling out a lot of annoying new laws about trash, this software tries to help you stay on top of those requirements and keep everything organized.

**What do you dislike about SAP Responsible Design and Production?**

It feels like a giant, expensive calculator for paying fines and taxes, rather than a creative tool that genuinely helps you design cooler, greener products. Overall, it seems built for accountants and compliance lawyers, not for the people who are actually making the packaging.

**What problems is SAP Responsible Design and Production solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It solves the problem of “sustainability guesswork.” While it can sometimes feel like a heavy, corporate tax calculator, it still helps move a company from merely guessing whether they’re being green to clearly understanding the exact cost and carbon impact of every piece of packaging they create.

The best part of SAP Responsible Design and Production is the visibility into material transparency. It integrates directly with our Bills of Materials and material masters, which turns 'sustainability' from a vague concept into hard data right in our production environment. It helps us understand exactly how much recycled content we are using versus virgin plastics across different lines. The system automatically pulls information directly from production orders and material recipes, saving time from manual data entry, and it 'explodes' complex packaging, like blister packs, to efficiently calculate the exact weight of each component. The 'What-If' tester is handy for assessing tax impacts of new materials, and SAP handles global tax laws in the background smoothly. It creates a Single Source of Truth, letting the Sustainability Office pull their own reports, saving us from constant data requests. It moves all manual work into one automated hub.

**What do you dislike about SAP Responsible Design and Production?**

The system requires very detailed information about every material, so the initial 'data cleaning' is a huge and time-consuming task for the production team. Setting everything up to work correctly with our existing factory systems is a big project that usually requires specialized experts to handle. Because there are so many buttons and settings, the screen can look a bit overwhelming and it takes a long time to learn how to use it properly. If a small detail is missing in our material records, the reports won't work, which puts a lot of pressure on us to keep every single piece of data perfect. The biggest challenge is Data Readiness. We realized our existing material records weren't detailed enough for the system's requirements, leading to a massive manual cleanup effort. The initial setup was a heavy lift because our existing records didn't have the specific details—like exact plastic percentages—that the system requires to work. Updating thousands of material files to meet the new requirements took the team several months of manual 'data cleaning' before we could even start. Linking the new cloud software to our current factory systems was technically difficult and required specialized IT experts to ensure the information moved correctly. The interface is quite complex with many new features to learn, so it took us a long time to feel confident using the system during our daily shifts.

I like how it connects interdepartmental transactions so that a lot of people from different departments can work on the same project simultaneously. Its so user friendly. The best aspect of SAP RDP is that it transforms sustainability from a vague, qualitative goal into a hard, measurable, and financially optimized business process.
Brilliant at automating complex global EPR and plastic tax calculations. The "what-if" scenario modeling is highly valuable for packaging redesigns, and the deep integration with SAP ERP provides a reliable single source of truth.

Requires absolutely perfect master data (BOMs) to function correctly. Implementation is heavy, time-consuming, and expensive. The UI is also quite dense for sustainability teams who aren't used to traditional SAP interfaces.

**What do you like best about SAP Responsible Design and Production?**

Well generally speaking it is very helpful I used it for a company making commercial used industrial products for their customers and SAP really helped in ensuring the proper design of the product and manufacturing procedures/techniques in compliance with sustainability, quality, safety, environmental etc. requirements. Since my work was mostly on PLM and PP modules, it really helped me to manage the product data from design stage to the end production stage including the design changes according to the standards ensuring the feasibility of design in terms of environmental and safety aspects. I can say PLM and PP were easy to use because I was a new user when I first used it for a project in a company, during my day to day use I found customer service helpful in need.

Things that are not easy when integrating with different modules, some modules can be very tricky, also requires attention to make sure all the data is transferred in a systemic manner across different systems

Well for me couple of things starting with ensure that the product designing and further manufacturing is done according to the proper standards and eliminating the rework from final stage, secondly the optimization of material usage and production resources special in my case since we were dealing with highly specialized product.
