**What do you like best about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

What I like best about SAP Digital Manufacturing is the real-time visibility it provides into production operations, manufacturing performance, and shop floor activities within a centralized platform. Before implementing it, much of our production monitoring and reporting relied on disconnected systems and manual updates, which made operational tracking slower and less reliable.

One of the biggest advantages for us has been the ability to connect manufacturing execution processes with the broader SAP ecosystem. Having production data, quality tracking, and operational workflows integrated more closely with ERP and supply chain systems improved overall coordination significantly.

We also appreciated the real-time analytics and monitoring capabilities. Operations teams can now identify production bottlenecks, downtime issues, and quality concerns much faster instead of waiting for delayed reporting cycles.

Overall, SAP Digital Manufacturing helped improve production transparency, operational efficiency, and decision-making while creating a more connected and data-driven manufacturing environment.

**What do you dislike about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

One of the main challenges with SAP Digital Manufacturing is the complexity involved in implementation and integration, especially for organizations with legacy manufacturing systems or highly customized production environments.

While the platform offers strong functionality, configuring production workflows, machine integrations, and operational reporting required significant planning and coordination between manufacturing, IT, and operations teams during rollout.

We also found that the learning curve can be fairly steep for users who are newer to digital manufacturing platforms or advanced manufacturing execution systems. Certain administrative and configuration workflows required additional training and technical support.

Another area that could improve is customization flexibility within some reporting and dashboard features. While the analytics capabilities are powerful overall, creating highly tailored production views and operational reports sometimes required more effort than expected.

Performance was generally stable, but larger manufacturing environments with high volumes of real-time production data occasionally required optimization to maintain responsiveness and reporting consistency.

The user interface is functional, though some workflows still feel more enterprise-focused and less intuitive for shop floor users who primarily need quick operational visibility.

That said, once the platform was fully configured and teams became familiar with the workflows, it provided strong operational value. Most of the limitations we experienced were related more to implementation complexity and system integration than the core manufacturing capabilities themselves.

**What problems is SAP Digital Manufacturing solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SAP Digital Manufacturing helped us solve several operational challenges related to limited production visibility, disconnected manufacturing systems, and inefficient shop floor reporting processes.

Before implementing the platform, production tracking, machine monitoring, and quality reporting were managed across multiple systems and manual spreadsheets. This created delays in operational visibility and made it difficult to respond quickly to production issues or performance bottlenecks.

One of the biggest problems was the lack of real-time insight into manufacturing operations across different facilities and production lines. SAP Digital Manufacturing helped centralize production data and provided much better visibility into machine performance, work orders, production status, and quality metrics in real time.

The platform also improved coordination between manufacturing, supply chain, and ERP processes. Earlier, production updates and inventory-related information often required manual synchronization between systems. With integrated workflows, operational data became more accurate and accessible across teams.

The integration with equipment and IoT-related data also helped improve monitoring and preventive maintenance planning across manufacturing operations.

From a business perspective, SAP Digital Manufacturing helped improve production efficiency, increase operational transparency, reduce manual reporting effort, and support more data-driven manufacturing decisions across the organization.

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2026

**What do you like best about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

From an accounting/operations perspective, the part I like most is the connection between production activity and ERP data. When manufacturing execution is integrated with SAP’s broader supply chain and ERP environment, it should make things like material consumption, production variances, inventory movements, labor tracking, and costing more reliable. That matters because the closer your operational data is to the source, the less cleanup you have to do later.

I also like that it can support standardization across plants or locations. Instead of each facility having its own spreadsheet-heavy process, SAP Digital Manufacturing gives companies a more consistent way to manage production, quality, and performance metrics.

**What do you dislike about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

My biggest concern would be complexity. The system can do a lot, but that also means it can become overbuilt if the company tries to automate every exception instead of first cleaning up the process. If the underlying production, inventory, routing, labor, or quality processes are messy, SAP Digital Manufacturing may just expose those issues faster rather than fix them.

**What problems is SAP Digital Manufacturing solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The biggest problem SAP Digital Manufacturing is solving is the gap between what is happening on the production floor and what the business thinks is happening.

In a lot of companies, manufacturing data is scattered across machines, spreadsheets, manual logs, supervisors’ updates, quality reports, and ERP entries that may not happen until later. That creates problems like delayed visibility, inaccurate inventory, weak production costing, missed quality issues, and management making decisions from stale information.

What I dislike about SAP Digital Manufacturing is that it can be complex and effort-intensive to implement, especially for companies without prior SAP MES experience. It’s a powerful solution, but to avoid overcomplication it really depends on strong process design, clean master data, and access to skilled SAP resources.

Another drawback is the limited out-of-the-box flexibility when you have very specific shop-floor requirements. In those cases, custom behaviors often require extensions on SAP BTP, which adds technical effort and increases dependency on specialized skills.

Cost is also a concern. Between licensing, BTP usage, implementation services, and ongoing support, expenses can add up quickly, making SAP DM a significant investment. For smaller plants or manufacturers with simpler needs, the overall cost may feel high compared to lighter or more specialized MES alternatives.

**What problems is SAP Digital Manufacturing solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) primarily solves the challenge of disconnected manufacturing operations. In many environments, shop-floor execution, quality, and maintenance operate separately from ERP, which leads to delays, extra manual effort, and limited visibility. SAP DM helps by connecting machines, operators, and production execution directly with business systems, providing real-time insight into what is happening on the shop floor.

It also tackles the lack of transparency and slow reaction times that come with fragmented data. With live production status, quality results, and traceability, issues can be identified earlier and escalated faster. This helps reduce downtime, improve yield, and support better decision-making based on current information rather than end-of-shift reports.

Another important problem it addresses is inconsistent execution across plants. SAP DM enables standardized processes and KPIs while still allowing local flexibility where needed. This makes multi-site rollouts easier, improves compliance, and simplifies training and ongoing support.

Overall, the main benefit is that manufacturing execution becomes more predictable, data-driven, and better aligned with business goals. You spend less time firefighting and reconciling data, and more time improving performance and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan O. | Marketing Manager / AR , Wholesale, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2025

**What do you like best about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

My favorite and most used application can be found in the supply chain arena. - Here we manage inventory; ensuring product is in healthy stock, forecasting our typical customer orders, keeping track of our outbound trucks and the freight we're being charged (this helps us compare other carriers rates)

**What do you dislike about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

While SAP is very powerful & full of helpful tools, I find SAP to be a bit overwhelming and that things tend to be nested into one another, also some apps seem redundant from a glance but, differ quite a bit once you explore it / play around.

**What problems is SAP Digital Manufacturing solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The biggest thing is keeping track of our products & outbound freight. - By being able to do this, we can accurately ship out truckloads without much or any backlog (Ex: We have a customer who purchases 3 pallets worth of cotton gloves every two weeks... We don't typically stock a whole lot of these as this customer is one of the only buyers. So, we basically have a repeat cycle where gloves come in and they get shipped out right away. Having SAPS hub to manage and see historical data lets us keep track of these shipments with no questions.

  ### 28. It transformed the visibility and control of our operational processes.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luis C. | Auditor de procesos y calidad, Wholesale, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

It allowed us to have complete traceability of each order, from receipt to delivery, with real-time data. The visibility it offers on operational efficiency and quality helped us reduce errors, optimize response times, and make data-driven decisions. Additionally, its integration with SAP S/4HANA facilitates the flow of information between areas and improves coordination between operations and finance.

**What do you dislike about SAP Digital Manufacturing?**

Although the platform is very comprehensive, its implementation can be complex and requires a considerable learning curve. Some advanced configurations are not intuitive and rely heavily on technical support or specialized consultants. We have also noticed that custom reports require additional technical knowledge to adapt them to the specific needs of the business.

**What problems is SAP Digital Manufacturing solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before using SAP Digital Manufacturing, it was difficult to have a complete view of what was happening at the different stages of the process, especially in the operational and quality control parts. With this tool, we managed to connect key areas, reduce reaction times to incidents, and standardize workflows. Now we have real-time indicators and can detect quality deviations or delays before they affect the final delivery. In summary, it helped us move from reactive management to data-driven management and continuous improvement.
