RuntimeHQ is an Operational State Control Plane designed for engineering organizations that operate multiple customer-facing applications. Modern engineering teams rarely manage a single monolithic interface. A typical architecture includes customer web applications, mobile applications, internal support portals, partner dashboards, and public APIs. During operational events-such as localized outages, degraded downstream services, or planned maintenance-every one of these applications needs to answer the same set of questions: Should this specific capability remain visible? Should users receive a warning banner? Should user interaction be disabled? Should the application fall back to a degraded experience? Historically, these decisions are coordinated through a patchwork of feature flags, manual deployments, hardcoded UI banners, and fragmented Slack updates. This approach creates inconsistent customer experiences across platforms and introduces unnecessary operational overhead during operational events. Feature flag platforms are designed to optimize software delivery; they answer, "Who should receive this feature?" Monitoring platforms detect anomalies; they answer, "Is something wrong?" Incident Management platforms coordinate responders; they answer, "How do we resolve the incident?" RuntimeHQ occupies a distinct architectural layer. It answers, "How should applications behave while the operational event is happening?" RuntimeHQ centralizes operational coordination while preserving distributed application ownership. It provides a centralized source of truth for Operational State. Engineering teams declare operational intent (e.g., Operational, Degraded, Outage, Maintenance) for specific capabilities (e.g., Search, Payments, Authentication), along with runtime metadata like customer-facing messages and maintenance details. This state is distributed to your applications via a global edge cache and consumed using lightweight SDKs. The architecture is entirely pull-based and relies on background polling and local caching. Applications never wait for RuntimeHQ during user requests-they evaluate Operational State from local memory. This ensures zero request-path dependency and preserves application performance. Crucially, RuntimeHQ does not execute application logic. It communicates operational intent. Each application team retains ownership of deciding exactly how their application should respond to a degraded capability-whether that means displaying a tooltip, hiding a button, or entering a read-only mode. Complementing Your Existing Stack Built for Platform Engineers, Site Reliability Engineers (SRE), Incident Commanders, and Engineering Leaders, RuntimeHQ does not replace your existing engineering tools. You continue using your preferred observability platforms to detect incidents, your incident management systems to coordinate responders, and your status pages to communicate externally. RuntimeHQ integrates alongside these systems to coordinate the internal, customer-facing runtime behavior of your applications. Standardize your runtime coordination. Separate your operational state from your deployment pipelines, and ensure your applications degrade gracefully and predictably.
