  ### 4. Amazing Technology

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew F. | Director, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 04, 2019

**What do you like best about Rudder?**

With Rudder we are able to maintain a global overview of critical infrastructure and reassure our customers that we are in control constantly.

**What do you dislike about Rudder?**

So far the only thing i "dislike" and it's a minor in comparison to the time we save, is the configuration editor would love a more visual editor with a flow like interface. Think node red as an example.

**What problems is Rudder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to ensure systems are up to date, installed with correct security agents, we are instantly aware of threats and compliance violations and above all thanks to the amazing rest API we were able to build a company portal that we can show compliance information to customers!

  ### 5. Best visibility and design flow

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Florian H. | Consultant, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2018

**What do you like best about Rudder?**

I can use Rudder to break the communication barriers I normally have to deal with in IT.
Normally, there's "the technical stuff" and "the stuff management needs". Both are distractions from each other and fixing one doesn't solve the other at all.

With Rudder I can easily show non-admins what's working, what we need to do, and they can digest that information to a complete understanding. Project managers, bosses and beginners can understand what's happening.

**What do you dislike about Rudder?**

I would like it to be easier to file away what I built, in a sanitized version. I hope for more interfaces to other tools (i.e. there's an ansible plugin, I would love to use that as an an exporter so I don't have to ever build ansible code again).
Community size.
It is also a bit "too much" for very small setups.

**Recommendations to others considering Rudder:**

Set it up, and slowly start doing what you always wanted to do (i.e. have a really great .bash_profile).
Keep in mind, since this is agent-based it is almost impossible (never say never) to lock yourself out.

**What problems is Rudder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Built some very flexible infrastructures that adapt well no matter where deployed.
Ensure things aren't just provisioned, but kept OK all the time.
Allow people to easily change what they need in a place they understand.
Gather year-long statistics on system maintenance needs, and as such, be able to tell when everything is tidy, or how far we have move from that point. I am dumping that data into Nagios (Check_MK to be specific, and also into ElasticSearch. My dream is to have this full circle - I'm also collecting other data, including IPFIX metrix into the same ElasticSearch instance, and am just waiting for DARPA to come up with some cool aggregation technique for all-different data :-)

  ### 6. Industrualization of our managed services

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Maxime L. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2018

**What do you like best about Rudder?**

There are many reasons to choose Rudder for implementing an excellent quality of services. First of all, for creating and dynamically updating groups of machines based on their inventory. Thus, we can create a node group of a certain distribution, containing some packages in a certain ip range for example. On these dynamic groups, it is possible to create a directive composed of a series of generic methods (creation of a directory, modification of a line, rebooting of a service etc.). For example, about thirty of these small bricks (generic methods) have allowed us to transform our installation and maintenance procedures of our internal wiki into rules in Rudder. The intuitive interface allows us to quickly see the quality of our compliance with our rules across our entire IT. Changes to these rules always require a multi-person workflow process to be validated and deployed in production.

**What do you dislike about Rudder?**

At the ergonomics level, we sometimes get lost between certain notions of general methods, directives, techniques and rules. The concept of rule is powerful because different directives can be applied for certain groups and not for others. And another rule may also contain some of these directives associated with other groups. But in use for more practice we often make a rule for a directive. So it's a lot of clicks for a single directive in a single rule.

**What problems is Rudder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our managed services is now dedicated to creating value through the creation of configuration rules and security policy. This expertise can then be easily deployed throughout the entire IT. An update of our policy or an optimization of a service is then quickly implemented throughout our entire IT. Rudder also allows us to respond to 0day alerts to patch and/or modify system configurations until we have the editor patches available. Rudder also gives us the opportunity to show our clients the work done by the compliance reports of all the rules applied on their system.

  ### 7. Why more people should use Rudder

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tom B. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2018

**What do you like best about Rudder?**

At ITsense we strongly support open source project and Rudder has always been a tool with tremendous potential. First of all, Rudder is very easy to instal an deploy; the user interface is cleverly designed and they provide a full documentation to help you get started (we do apreciate that they have translated it).
In addition we appreciate the codeless user interface with build-in template library.
At last, Rudder can manage quite everything (only HP-UX and iOS don't have their own agent version), everything else is available already.

**What do you dislike about Rudder?**

So few people in the community. Even though it's growing, it's hard for Rudder to compete against giants ( such as Puppet for instance). Also it can be difficult to use before understanding how it works.

**What problems is Rudder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need to manage both our server and our client's server. Rudder is really usefull time-saving automation tool.

  ### 8. Great "Plug-And-Play" Configuration Management Tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rémi V. | Business & Integration Architecture Manager | Infrastructure Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2018

**What do you like best about Rudder?**

Rudder is very easy to install and setup with a basic configuration set.
The Audit mode is a killer feature, and thanks to the clean webgui you have a clear dashboard to know what you have to fix.
API is also usefull if you want to automate some tasks and plug it to another tool (like Ansible to perform some tasks).
Moreover, the agent node has a very light footprint on the nodes.

**What do you dislike about Rudder?**

Be carefull when writing complex techniques and directives, as it can lead to some headache.
I use Rudder for continuous configuration once servers are deployed. I tried using it for deploy nodes from scratch, but there are better tools for that use case.
It would be nice to edit techniques directly from CLI.

**Recommendations to others considering Rudder:**

use rudder to check configuration once servers are deployed.

**What problems is Rudder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was looking for a nice vizualisation tool to check servers conformity. Rudder was the only one with a clean dashboard, plus simple drag and drop configuration system.

  ### 9. One of the easiest configuration management tool on the market

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Olivier M. | IT Systems Expert - Linux Specialist, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2018

**What do you like best about Rudder?**

Rudder has by far the lowest learning curve across configuration management tools on the market. Once the server side is deployed, installing and pluging in agents is a breeze.

Where other tools force you to learn fancy implemented DSL, brand new functionnal languages or specific YAML syntaxes, Rudder let's you create your management rules in a very graphical way that your whole team will be able to adapt to very quickly and easily.

The graphical reporting let's you quickly access the compliance of your whole infrastructure.

The integrated inventory, can easily be queried from the integrated API to let you programmatically populate other internal tools - Big plus when having to integrate 3rd party corporate tools.

**What do you dislike about Rudder?**

The graphical interface - almost only - can sometimes be less flexible than what could be provided.
Luckily the Rudder devs are working on that point with the integrated technique editor.

It needs some easier way to plug shared-files with external Git repositories to make admin life easier. Git push to deploy modifications also makes sense.

**Recommendations to others considering Rudder:**

Coming from a "classical" IT system and/or Infrastructure team, moving to a full infrastructure/configuration as code can be a big challenge, especially depending on the dev skillset of your teams.
Rudder can make your team leverage automation and configuration management in an easier an quicker way.

**What problems is Rudder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Baseline compliance and installation reproducibility of more than 5 hundreds production servers.
