  ### 39. Solid, Stable, Secure Server OS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alex K. | Senior Linux Systems Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 19, 2023

**What do you like best about Red Hat Enterprise Linux?**

RHEL is a complete, stable, and secure operating system that is very good at using system resources and delivering solid uptime for services run on it. The most common server software (for web, database, directory, etc.) is packaged by RedHat, kept up-to-date with back-ported security updates, and easily updatable via RPM.

The Linux operating system makes better use of system resources than Windows-based servers. For this reason, any Linux makes better use of things like memory and CPU. RHEL generally sets up a small subset of required processes (that you can also easily tailor to your needs) on install. Things are a little more "additive", meaning it will start with more bare minimum services, and you add what is needed for your particular case. They try to strike a balance between most commonly-needed things, and security.

Having software installed via RPM and centralized in repositories (which you can self-host by purchasing Satellite) makes it incredibly easy to keep your environment updated and scriptable.

**What do you dislike about Red Hat Enterprise Linux?**

The only thing that I can really mark as a dislike is the cost/licensing of it. To be fair, a lot of work goes into maintaining the packages and OS in a non-disruptive manner. While I think you are getting what you pay for, licensing shenanigans are always possible.

**What problems is Red Hat Enterprise Linux solving and how is that benefiting you?**

RHEL makes good use of our hardware, making it very easy to keep updated and secure. We don't have to hunt down third-party software and pay additional licensing; everything we need for our web platform is included, namely: Apache/NGINX for the webserver, PHP/Python for the app layer, and MySQL/PostgreSQL for the database layer. Everyone's server needs differ, but if you are looking for a solution (not a particular brand), then RedHat will probably work. What I mean by this is that if you want ActiveDirectory, you aren't going to run that on RHEL. If you want "a directory server", you have a choice of various server software packaged on RHEL that will fit that need.

**Official Response from Brianna Gault:**

  ### 42. Impressive Performance and Reliability

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Muhammad Zain A. | System implement Engineer , Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 19, 2023

**What do you like best about Red Hat Enterprise Linux?**

Stability and Reliability: RHEL is renowned for its stability, making it an excellent choice for mission-critical systems. Its rigorous testing and quality assurance processes ensure a dependable operating environment.

Security: Red Hat prioritizes security, providing regular updates and patches to address vulnerabilities promptly. Features like SELinux enhance access controls and protect against security breaches.

Long-Term Support: RHEL offers long-term support for each major release, providing customers with extended software life cycles and minimizing the need for frequent major upgrades.

Enterprise Features: RHEL offers a comprehensive set of features tailored for enterprise environments, including centralized system management, high availability and clustering capabilities, virtualization support, and containerization technologies.

Red Hat Support: The company's reputation for excellent customer support is highly valued. RHEL users can access knowledge bases, documentation, and receive direct assistance from Red Hat's support team.

Compatibility and Ecosystem: RHEL's broad compatibility with software vendors and extensive ecosystem of certified applications and tools make it suitable for a wide range of enterprise needs.

Open-Source Philosophy: Red Hat's commitment to the open-source community is appreciated by many users, as it fosters collaboration and innovation within the technology landscape.

**What do you dislike about Red Hat Enterprise Linux?**

Cost: RHEL is a commercial distribution, and its licensing fees may be considered a drawback for some organizations, especially when compared to free or lower-cost Linux distributions.

Restricted Updates: While RHEL's long-term support is a benefit for stability, some users might find that the release cycle for major updates is more conservative, which may lead to delayed access to the latest features and software versions.

Proprietary Components: RHEL includes some proprietary software components that are not open-source. This might be a concern for users who prefer fully open-source solutions.

Learning Curve: For users accustomed to other Linux distributions or operating systems, RHEL may have a slight learning curve due to its specific tools and configurations.

Software Repositories: RHEL's official software repositories might not have the same extensive collection of packages found in some community-driven distributions, potentially requiring users to rely on third-party repositories or compile software from source.

Resource Consumption: As an enterprise-focused OS with robust features, RHEL might require slightly more system resources compared to lightweight Linux distributions, making it less suitable for very resource-constrained environments.

Community vs. Enterprise Versions: Some users might prefer the community-driven CentOS distribution over RHEL due to CentOS's previous similarities to RHEL, though this dynamic changed with CentOS Stream in late 2020.

**What problems is Red Hat Enterprise Linux solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Red Hat Enterprise Linux aims to solve the challenges of stability, security, and scalability in enterprise environments, while also providing a platform for innovation and flexibility. Its comprehensive features and long-term support benefit organizations by offering a reliable, secure, and well-supported operating system for critical business operations.
