This helps so much when I try to browse through all my papers. Also I love they could download the si figures and file for you directly. Importing and labeling papers are also easier than endnotes. Even if we have free endnotes through the university I'll still choose this. **What do you dislike about ReadCube?** There is only one tiny issue. I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I used it wrong. Normally how I use it is to download pdf and import it into the library, after that I delate the file to the download folder. I think for other similar software, they would generate a library folder and copy your pdf to that folder, so you're safe to clean up the download folder. But here, if I have done so, it has to redownload pdf from the Internet. **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** Arrangeing papers is so critical for my research. I used endnote before, but it is more like giving me more workload rather than actually helping. Papers do reduce the stress of keeping papers arranged. ### 10. I've had trouble selecting the text that I want to highlight, which, at times, has been incredibly frustrating. I think some of the time it may be the quality of the PDF documents, but it happens enough across documents that I think there needs to be some fine-tuning under the hood **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** This reference manager allows me to read and annotate, search my notes, and then integrate citations and references into Word or Google docs with ease. Whether I am at work home or on the go, the web app has all my papers stored in the cloud, with highlights, lists, supplemental materials, and notes ready to augment my studies. The inline citations and citing articles provide insights into the next works to read and easily add sources to my library. The number of tools at my disposal just continues to grow. **What do you dislike about ReadCube?** Searching for authors or keywords has not been consistently great. Sometimes an obvious word from the title wouldn't bring up the correct result or a slight misspelling of an author name leaves me searching for the article for 5 minutes. This has been much better recently, so they are actively rixing this issue. The other biggest problem for me right now is version control on preprints. I need to update these manually once they move from preprint to published and usually the article undergoes revision so my highlights and notes are not ported. It makes me hesitant to use Readcube Papers with preprints. But then again, I really have no better choice. **Recommendations to others considering ReadCube:** It's worth the year cost of admission. My experience with other reference managers is not extensive but I don't see a reason to even give them a shot. **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** When I am in need of a quick citation, I can get a formatted citation with the click of a button. Generating entire bibliographies has recently become possible and using it in Google Docs allowed me to complete my bibliography on my last grant in less than 10 minutes. Seriously incredible. After a couple of years, sources can be forgotten, but revisiting my highlights is like picking up where I left off even years later, usually with new insights to answer old questions or sticking points. The biggest benefit I consistently see is the ability to search through my articles references and find new citations to the article I am reading. This allows me to follow the trail of citations and watch how a field develops while staying current. ### 15. If you highlight, make notes, write words or signs (simple edition tools that ReadCube does not have) on a PDF you need to import it again otherwise any edition will be lost. 2- It takes forever to import and synch, meanwhile the app is frozen and you can do nothing wiht it. E.g., a 2MB PDF file takes 60-120 secs to get into the library, to be uploaded to the cloud and to get "synch" between the cloud and your desktop app. Imagine you need to import 10 PDFs in different lists: will take 15-20min just to do it. 3- Unlike previous versions (Papers 1, 2 and 3) that you paid just once, this one has a year suscription (USD 60/year) 4- Migration of my library to ReadCube failed for 15% of my PDFs, Tech Support has no idea why. I have to import manually 138 PDFs (still doing it) 5- On average, I have to ask for help to Tech Support (nice people) once a week. Something that never happened over nine years of continuous use of Papers 1, 2 and 3. 6- In summary, beyond the money, with this bad quality "upgrade" you will WASTE MUCH MUCH TIME, DO NOT BUY IT. Stay with Papers 3: simple, versatile and reliable. **Recommendations to others considering ReadCube:** Do not buy it, it is a huge waste of time. It's one of the few pieces of software that actively makes me excited to work using it. It optimises so much of my research work, whether it's organising resources in a hundred different ways, finding similar ones through recommendations and quick hyperlinks embedded everywhere within pdf files, seamlessly annotating pdf files in as many ways as you'd like, integrating with Microsoft Word (and others) for any citation/bibliography needs...anything I thought of (or didn't), I either found right away or eventually in an update. Along with that you have an elegant, clean GUI, responsive customer support, and frequent updates with actual release notes. Oh and dark theme. **What do you dislike about ReadCube?** Nothing so far that wasn't already added/fixed. The only feature I'd absolutely love is something like Mendeley Notebook (a temporary 'notebook' within the app where you can quickly add certain annotations along with some of your own notes to select pages). That's the only feature I'm still jealous of outside Papers. **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** Organisation organisation organisation. I don't get overwhelmed as much anymore with the amount of papers I've saved. I no longer have to search very long to find what I need, whether it's a notation, a whole paper, or quickly previewing references within a paper. Really love that it can find (most of the time) the citation information for newer articles. Doesn't do as well with things older than 2000. But I REALLY love the reading and annotation features. Being able to read on my Ipad and Mac and have it sync is a dream. The GoogleDocs add on is nice. A tiny bit slow sometimes, but not irritatingly so. This app is helping me read way more research than I have been. Also, the DISCOVER tab is so cool! Why has nobody thought of this before! I find so much cool stuff and reading things in my field is more exciting and less of a chore. **What do you dislike about ReadCube?** When trying to share citations from the main desktop app, it doesn't save my preferred citation style! It always reverts back to the Nature citation style. I don't love that if an article's text is available on a webpage that it will often take me to that page to read from their site. In these cases, there's almost always a download button to get the PDF, but Papers doesn't often get it automatically, which I wish it did, just for convenience. Elsevier is one example where this happens. *Big annoying thing*: When you insert Bibliography from GoogleDocs (again, it doesn't save my preferred citation style) but it also adds a ton of weird spaces between lines and puts it in a strange font, and if I try to do hanging indent, it only does the top paragraph because it's a text block. This is a big turnoff for me. Wish it would import bibliography in a normal font. with citations on separate carriage returns. and give options to import with a hanging indent. because having to do the manual formatting is one of the great challenges of my first-world life. **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** The discover feature helps me so much to read more in my field. Reading can be a chore for me, but it feels fresh and new when I'm finding things on the discover tab. It's also helping me deal with citations more easily. Being able to have citations in GoogleDocs is great. Zoterro is so slow. Papers is way faster. ### 18. So, I feel like, Readcube papers is specially designed for the research purposes. Very kind people in support. **What do you dislike about ReadCube?** The bugs and frustration of getting the basics needed for desk research to work well: importing citations, PDFs, search, and the slightly clunky annotation tools (those are pretty good, just not as slick as the other tool I wound up going with). When I was testing it service was also very overloaded and slow to respond, and not always knowledgable or able to help. Papers solves that problem well, and organizes articles with competence. The web app is on par with the desktop version; both handle themselves beautifully. Although some functionality has been disappointing, recent updates have brought improvements. The library offers adequate tools for organizing papers. The Papers team continues to make updates to the app, and I feel it's going in the right direction. **What do you dislike about ReadCube?** Some features of Papers have been less than completely successful in my experience. Directly adding a paper to the library from a web page generally does not work for me because of my institution's proxy. Papers doesn't recognize most Academia pages as sources for PDFs. And the citation manager is not as flexible and powerful as Zotero's. I could wish the PDF reader, a vital aspect of the app's value argument, would be a bit smoother. For instance, selecting text on a page occasionally doesn't work depending on the page's position in the window--even though the page is visible. I'm not sure if this is the fault of Papers, but it works very poorly with a Lenovo ActivePen 2 (on Lenovo Yoga). I also wish Papers would support book references better. As it is, I have to use Zotero as my primary reference manager while Papers is the reader. **Recommendations to others considering ReadCube:** I am still happy for the service, though it's worth considering Zotero's offerings as well. And depending on your needs something like Quoll Writer may be more relevant. **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Papers to organize my school reading. I combine Papers with Zotero, allowing the latter to manage my citations while Papers houses the article PDFs and my notes. In addition, I'm planning to export comments from Papers into a database where they can be combined with notes from Kindle and other sources. Each paper that has been opened is assigned an individual tab at the top. When I have several papers open at the same time, I can easily become lost trying to figure out which papers I had opened and where the particular one I want is in the row of tabs. I think this can be remedied by either allowing me to open multiple Papers windows at a time (I am on Windows 10), so I can designate each window to a particular thread of research I am working on, or some other tab management tool. This is the epitome of selfishness and greed and should not be rewarded. Cannot recall in 30 years of using Apple computers a software that did this until now. Reprehensible behavior. **Recommendations to others considering ReadCube:** Look elsewhere..................................... **What problems is ReadCube solving and how is that benefiting you?** None. I have used ReadCube on numerous occasions. It repeatedly fails to work with our organizations proxy, where numerous other products work fine. It has taken actions that were a single click with the previous version of Papers 3 and turned them into 3, 4, and 5 step actions. So, you pay more money in order to get to do more work?!?!? There are a variety of features that have also been removed. Apparently a part of their business model is the less for more approach. It's no wonder they are nagging people to death to upgrade.
