The managed service has also enabled us to run a cloud analytics platform with a much leaner operational support model. In terms of features, Qubole's scheduler tool and UI have proved very popular among our analysts. This has enabled analysts to easily run and monitor their own processes, without relying on central data teams. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Some Qubole functionality remains relatively immature compared to some competitors. New beta features are regularly released, but don't always make it to a truly production-ready state. **Recommendations to others considering Qubole:** Engage Qubole's teams to help understand the potential ROI. If you're running an existing solution, it's worth trying to run a POC or benchmark to understand whether there might be potential cost savings. Also, it's worth engaging early with Qubole's onboarding teams so that they can understand your setup. We had a few security requirements which needed ironing out during the implementation stages. **What problems is Qubole solving and how is that benefiting you?** Qubole has enabled our analysts to access and run queries against cloud data at petabyte scale. They offer a wide array of solutions to create an integrated platform in a number of different manners. We have leveraged their integrated Airflow and Spark capabilities (and abused them at times as well) and it has provided us the ability to scale rapidly while our platform was maturing. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** There is a fundamental lack of ability to reliably provide spot instances to large clusters and long-running clusters. There are also still a number of growing pains at the company around communication with customers that make the customer experience painful at times. **Recommendations to others considering Qubole:** Understand their administration functionalities, IAM roles, BI data up-front. Make sure to measure and monitor platform usage closely from day 1 otherwise costs will quickly balloon out of control. Do your homework and understand whether a fully integrated platform is what you actually need. In the case you do not need the full integrations, Qubole may not be worth the cost to your organization and there may be less-complex solutions out there. **What problems is Qubole solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have used Qubole to allow many different applications and pipelines to operate on big data independently of each other. I've needed to check code from people who have left the company. The ability to join across databases is helpful. The scheduler is helpful too. It's a seamless scheduler. I like the ability to use many different channels and cadences in it. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** The versioning in qubole something that could be improved. I accidentally save over my work. I also need some training on the new Analyze Beta. I've shared qubole links and didn't realize the code would continue changing, so the files I generated were useless for sharing. It would be helpful to understand when to use history and when to use workspace. I also don't know how to save things in Analyze Beta. I'd like to see some youtube training on notebooks. One great thing about tableau and excel is the amount of youtube videos. It's not easy to find solutions for qubole. Can you incentivize power users to create forums like tableau? I know there are limitations with qubole/tableau. that's a big pain point. I always get tableau errors and warnings. The drag and drop field names could be improved, or maybe I need training. It feels like autocomplete picks up fields from other tables, it would be helpful to have more training on why it's selecting those. Often the drag and drops puts fields in the wrong place (not where my cursor is). **What problems is Qubole solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use qubole to analyze metrics and show them in tableau. I consolidate many different data sources and view our listing and site performance. A big benefit is the scheduler is really easy to use. I like that this is all in one space. All queries that have run have unique links. So it is easy to share with your colleagues. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** It is not that easy to do analytical work based on the result of the query. For example, not so many different type of charts are supported in the UI. EMR is a little too bare-bones and lacks lots of useful features, and while DataBricks is perhaps the most polished, autoscaling limitations and less responsive support are points to consider. I like that commands can easily be stored and reused when need be. I can also make spark jobs really easily and pull all the variables into a single table set. Storing the code also makes it easy to re-reun reports when need be. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Depending on how many things you have open, it can be slow sometimes. It's easy to get crowded with how much data you can be combing through at a single time so if i could see different tables as pop-outs to quickly reference, that would make it a lot easier to work across multiple table sets. **Recommendations to others considering Qubole:** Anything to increase speed of processing the data would be great. Increased features to organize data would also be great. **What problems is Qubole solving and how is that benefiting you?** Currently we're solving for being able to pull data easily from multiples sources and be able to both aggregate it and also then manipulate the data to comb through insights easily and efficiently. The major benefits are that we can integrate with the different APIs easily and then pull across them with no issue. Another major benefit is that i can organize all of my commands and then re-use them as often as i need to. The table merger can also be very useful however i haven't been able to fully harness the power of it. Hoping that i'll be able to continue using it and finding new ways to use it. ### 11. I like that I don't have to think about potentially losing my old work. I also enjoy the share-ability of qubole. The sharing of links was definitely not intuitive in the beginning but now I really enjoy it. I like the the potential of notebooks. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Initial impression of qubole was honestly not that great because of the UI being not intuitive. The scheduling UI is still awful, I have to keep filtering to go back to my failed schedules since it always only shows the active ones. Notebook graphing capabilities is very lacking in features right now as well. The auto populate in the editor is always kind of laggy. The search functionality in analyze only searches in the current schema you are in which sucks because if I knew which schema it was it I wouldn't need to search. I wish I can actually graph directly from my queries similar to how mode does it. Right now I realize my work flow is always I query and download results and have to pivot things in google spreadsheets. **What problems is Qubole solving and how is that benefiting you?** It allows me to easily query using multiple querying engines. It is essential to my daily tasks (surprisingly) and I check it multiple times a day. This is surprising for someone who does not work in data! I like how essential it is to my day to day. I honestly don't know where I'd be without it. I like the convenience of it- how you can easily save reports and re-run them every day if needed. It's accessible for sure **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Sometimes, I'll run into errors with generating a report and I won't know why. If you aren't super data-savvy or code-savvy, you'll be super confused and have no idea what you did wrong. Sometimes Qubole doesn't make clear what you did wrong or hat you're missing. I believe there might be some integration time error from my company's end too but not sure since I don't work in data. We also did a migration from API to us on Qubole and that was an extremely lengthy process. It is the most useful tool to query large data sets and get insights straight from a SQL query. I don't recall ever having an issue. If something goes wrong in Hive, there is usually a clear path to resolution. New features for Zeppelin notebooks are steadily arriving and making Qubole's version of Zeppelin stand out from others. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Zeppelin notebooks can be troublesome. Issues are hard to replicate which makes them more frustrating to use. However, as time goes on, the issues are fewer and I am learning workarounds. A lot of the notebook issues are Zeppelin-specific and do not have to do with Qubole - who are working hard to improve that experience. **Recommendations to others considering Qubole:** You will be happy with the Hive query capabilities. Make sure you test your specific use cases for notebook use. With careful cluster setup and management and recognizing the inherent limitation in Zeppelin itself, you will be happy. **What problems is Qubole solving and how is that benefiting you?** Machine learning to model and predict various business outcomes. Ability to get log back to client through REST API. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Some UI sections look redundant from functionality point, like Explorer overlaps with Analysis in many aspects. I think it would be better to unify them. Some weird glitches are annoying, for example when the Spark logs are disappeared. I just select the config I need and I can start working on spark or presto. There are some configurations that must be done (connection to S3, keys, iAM roles and so on), however, they pale in comparison to running an installation from scratch. Scaling out or scaling up is also made simple by just choosing a few things from the cluster config options. Built in solutions like Scheduler help with scheduling and automating a few jobs, and when things get too large, you can use airflow on Qubole. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Sometimes there are things that work on Zeppelin or the underlying technology in general, but due to some issues with Qubole value added product, these things fail (example is connection between spark & redshift). Qubole also supports notebooks backed by spark clusters, which is very handy for quickly iterating on ideas for developers. Qubole support is really good, they respond to tickets in timely manner and we always have someone helping us out via slack/emails on time critical projects.. **What do you dislike about Qubole?** Qubole sometimes has lot of bugs and lot of their features are not well documented. You have to engage support to get those things figured out.
