The transition has been easier than expected. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** One difficulty I have found relates to converting my QuarkXPress file into other file types. I signed up under the assumption that I could convert my file to InDesign - however, as it turns out, there is much more required in order to do that (especially if you are using a Quark file that wasn't created during the last couple of years). I was disappointed by the incompatibility - but the userface itself has been easy to adjust to. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** I had a document (olddddd) that only could be opened using a Quark program - and I am thankful that QuarkXPress was available so that I could access this document for continued use in our office! **Official Response from Quark Team:** > Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. There is so much stuff that really doesn't interest me and that i'll never need to use but I've got to get past all the stuff for that kind of thing before i can just get on with a print job. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** If you're young and Quark is your first time out, like it was for me just under 30 years ago then it's great. But if you're happy with InDesign I'm inclined to tell you to stay with it. I find that ID is a much more friendly environment these days. I used Quark for 20 years, right from the start and was a big fan. I wasn't very impressed with InDesign when I bought an early copy because I was interested and a client was making big noises about it and it might be required in the future. But if you're over 50 then using both alongside each other isn't a lot of fun. And now Quark does just about everything, most of which you don't need and isn't useful, I had to stick with InDesign. I wasn't a big fan for switching to ID, but the biggest publication I produced insisted I use ID and I had to very reluctantly switch. Now I love it, and using Quark for anything is a great effort and a lot of grief, but maybe that has something to do with having booted Quark every day, all day, and not the very occasional toe that gets dipping in these days. I have recently updated to Quark 2020 because there may be work for me where I have to use it, but I have to be honest and say I feel now about ID as I did about Quark some years back, I think ID's great and I'll never need another, but if I have to then I'll have to bite the bullet and go back to Quark. Or retire... **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** None. ### 3. So I use Quark for about 30 years now. I don't really know any other program to compare Quark with so I can't say what I like 'best' other then it gets my job done to create catalogues. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** 1) Back in the 1990's Photoshop did not require to add any endings on file names, for example.jpg, tif, . Consequently I created 1000's of picture and graphic files which I used up to today. The BIG trouble is that when you created a catalogue, say, in 1997 and continued to upgrade this catalogue using much of the same graphics and pictures files you ran into a big trouble after Quark began to require a file name ending. For a couple of years this was mitigated by if you placed the Quark file INSIDE the folder which all your graphics and pictures it would create an OUTPUT file using the existing graphics without file name ending. This now has stopped. I now have to add a file name ending on each of graphics files of which I have over 5000. In order to do so I have to open EACH file in photoshop to first find out what the file type is, close the file and then add this suffix to the file name. I needed to do that with my last catalogue and it took me 2 days of work. I still have 4 catalogues left with about 600 pages and thousands of graphic files which needs updating. 2) Back about 6 years ago I had so much trouble opening existing Quark files after I got updated versions it created havoc for me. Some of which was fixed by your tech support but all this is needless time waste. 3) Tech support used to be an arrogant corporate affair. You were treated like a criminal trying to rob the Quark company in Switzerland. You needed so much phone numbers, e-mail, passwords etc. it was extremely customer unfriendly. It has gone better now as I did sign for tech support. But last time when I had a problem Quark support was not able to log into my desktop at all. That took me the better of 2 days to get a simple issue resolved being on the phone for hours. 4) I have to interact with web-designers and translators (in Canada we publish everything in English and French). Because Quark had lost it's customer base nearly ALL of our contractors I work with have given up on Quark long time ago and now use In-Design. Consequently they use old and previous Quark versions so I have to downsave sometimes to 3 or 4 versions back. The only reason I have not switched to In-Design is that I am too lazy and too afraid about problem during this process. If it wasn't for Connie Fennell at your support I would have switched to In-Design long time ago. Kudoos to her ! 5) Then there is this little problem of H&J's which after more than 30 years is still a miracle to me. Over the years tried several times to get help but I think this question is too stupid that your support always refers me back to the instructions which does not make any sense to me. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Quark for desktop publishing and some marketing materials only. The issue I am running into is that more and more companies do not use Quark anymore and I run into non-acceptance of Quark files. ### 7. InDesign has taken over the field of page layout and design. We only use Quark for older files and emergency purposes. We have a copy just in case a customer submits a Quark doc. If you don't, you keep your version of course – "forever". We are on a yearly cycle currently, and since 2015 the upgrade has been $185. So $15.42 per month if you compare that to others who offer monthly rental/subscription models. Plus QuarkXPress adds innovative features in each release, first layout app to offer full Color Font support, only layout app so far to export as PDF/X-4 & PDF/A, first to allow you to convert PDFs to editable objects, only one to allow you to export as native apps and progressive web apps (all without additional cost of course). Along with the master pages which are a dream come true when you have a book you are compiling of over 200 pages. And also the other seemingly simple pros like character styles, paragraph styles, which really keep everything cohesive. It saves time by having these. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** There are limiting things to Quark such as not having all the features many other programs such as itself has, being a relatively stand alone program can make it very incompatible when it comes to it's files. So interchanging without changing the file type too much makes for future complications. Also the price point makes it very unflattering. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** Able to create extensive booklets to sell. ### 17. These crashes have been a problem for years. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have worked these bugs out by now. And their technical support leaves much to be desired. Seems their solution to every issue is to simply restart the program and your computer or to even uninstall and reinstall the program. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** I wouldn’t recommend QuarkXPress. I would always recommend InDesign over QuarkXPress anyday. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** The only reason we keep a copy of QuarkXPress is because some of our clients still prefer this program to InDesign, so we have to have the program in order to be able to work from our clients’ native files. It is easy to create multiple doucments quickly. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** I dislike the lack of integration with Adobe products. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** Quark is not longer the standard for page layout. I would advise against purchasing it, as there are better options out there (such as Adobe InDesign). **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** I don't use Quark much anymore, except to open out older files from backup. Measurements can be exact and the dialog box for PDF output selection is also detailed. Packaging work and pulling linked files and fonts into one location is easy. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** Sometimes the program will freeze or shut down. A "Recovered Files" folder will then appear on your desktop that may or may not have your latest files. You are also limited in the types of files you can import into a Quark document. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** Be sure to set the auto saving mode to ON so that you can keep your most recent files in case the program crashes. This is a powerful layout program and you can get very precise and achieve accurate printing results when tricky folds and perforations are part of the design. Creating on screen is like laying out on a board but with massive editability. My current client has Quark files that need updating, so I will most likely be using Quark on their machine. Now that Adobe has moved to a subscription model, I may be considering Quark again as my go to layout program. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** I was turned off by price. When InDesign debuted at a much cheaper price and had the ability to convert Quark documents, I made the switch. Unless my client has particular needs, they aren't concerned with the software; the deliverable is a print ready pdf. At one point when working with Windows software, postscript information would not print properly in Quark. Calls to Quark's support did not resolve the issue. At the time Windows was not supporting postscript natively the way Macs did. Adobe realized this and built the support into their software. Hence, InDesign had no problem with postscript fonts nor eps files. The design, organization and interface is very clean and well thought out making the overall use smooth and easy to learn. It was designed as page layout software and has always done that well. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** I began using Quark when Pagemaker dropped the ball years ago. After Adobe began taking the lead I quickly realized that they had created software that was more versatile with smoother transitions into other programs for illustration and photography than Quark. Quark dropped way behind and everyone seemed to move to Adobe. I have also experienced the software to be slow, jumpy and endless problems that caused crashes, losing work. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** Quark is really well designed and easy to use for page layout, book design, large publications, annual reports, and catalogs. The price is also pretty spendy, you can get a subscription to the adobe software programs for less and have a better product in the end. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** Although I prefer Adobe indesign, Quark isn't a bad substitute. It's similar to indesign, so it's easy to go back and forth between programs. If looking for a new page layout program, I'd suggest indesign. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** It's fairly intuitive and easy to find your way around, very similar to adobe indesign, but not as user friendly. If hiring someone with only indesign experience, it's fairly easy to get them transitioned into quarkexpress. ### 28.
