I think attention checks in the experiments are still needed because a small number of bots are present (although much better than almost all other similar platforms I have recruited from in the past). I would highly recommend Prolific to other researchers. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** The main downside is the spiralling costs. It is a tricky one as of course we should be paying participants more money, but it seems if you do that you get increased admin fees, so there's a bit of a balance needed. If Prolific could reduce their costs a bit I think this would benefit researchers, participants, and the scientific community. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** It does help greatly to recruit participants quickly. The data quality is generally good I would say. It is user friendly. ### 2. Our research group stopped used MTurk because of too many bot accounts (even though accounts were highly rated), but on Prolific we only have to reject roughly 1 in 100 respondents for not responding at all and exclude about 3 in 100 for later putting in an effort but not providing usable data. It's integrated well with the survey platform we use, and the ability to add multiple users to projects has meant that we can easily have one lab member pay for studies and another person supervising data collection. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** I haven't used the panel features much, so I'm not sure how well it would do at reaching smaller populations. Overall, we find that the general Prolific population skews Millennial, female, and slightly liberal compared to the overall US population -- but this is still quite good in comparison to college student samples. The other thing I'm not sure about is how easy the location settings (e.g., located in the US) are to circumvent. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Prolific to recruit participants for psychology studies. If the experiment does not require special lab equipment, we can collect data much more quickly online, get a more representative sample, and get equivalent levels of attention paid to the task. ### 3. But I had asked for a specific screeners and almost 20% of the Participants did not meet that critieria when asked in my questionnaire. Prolific support on this matter wasnt that useful expect that they helped me to return submissions which took a lot of time. If time is of essence then maybe rethink using Prolific that have non-negotiable screeners. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** They are giving us access to particpants when sometimes that can be challenging in our world. ### 5. It's very easy to field a survey, and data comes in quickly. I especially appreciate being able to filter on demographics like country, gender, sexuality, military service, etc etc. The support team is also easy to get in touch with and has always been able to resolve my issues. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** Not a dislike, but important to keep in mind that this is only a survey platform, not a survey design program. It is pretty obvious that participants do not take the studies seriously and are just here for the money. I have no issue with them wanting to be paid, so long as they take the suveys seriously. On top of that, I've used Prolific for 3 years now and I gotta tell you, some of these participants are downright online bullies. I have received some of the most demeaning and upsetting messages from participants through this platform. Since using prolific my productivity in conducting studies increased, with much benefit for my research, which also widened in scope due to the possibility to conduct cross-cultural studies. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** The thing I dislike most about Prolific is the interface of the section for managing participants, the interface the section for projects, in the page for single project and the page for a single study. The section with the list of project should be a bit more sofisticated, showing the number of studies within each project listed. In the page of a single project as well I would like a breadcrumb to be able to go back to the projects list page, and in the page of the single study as well I would like breadcrumbs for navigating in the tree of projects, or any was a button (back arrow) allowing to go back to the page of the project. The section about participants is really annoying and has poor usability. Screener tend to be long, and if you have many set the page gets very long. A list (in a file system window style) of sets, showing only their name, the number of participants, the date first created (and the n. of participants at that time), the date it was last modified (and the n. of participants at that time), and a button to edit and delete. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** easily recruiting participants for psychological studies ### 9. Many parameters can be set directly by the researcher (e.g. screener) and interaction with qualtrics is smooth (e.g. importing the prolific identifier into qualtrics). Conducting longitudinal studies is very simple. In my opinion, the major positive point is the researcher's autonomy of use. Overall, the quality of the data is good. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** The negative point I would see is that, for some countries (such as France, where I'm based), the available sample of people is still quite small for carrying out studies (especially if you need a slightly specific population). **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** This allows me to recruit samples of participants quickly, and especially samples of participants with specific characteristics (e.g. ethnicity, sexual orientation). ### 10. The participants have always completed their tasks, the service has usually worked without a hitch, it is easy to keep track of who-did-what-when, and tech support has helped us whenever something didn't work right. I also appreciate their guid on how to integrate with the most popular survey services, and even plugging my own was a five-minutes affair. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** The only negative thing I can say about Prolific is that the web interface is *slightly* less responsive that I would like. They are far from the only ones with this problem, though, and you only notice when you're nervously refreshing over and over to see that everything is working as it should. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** I used Prolific to collect human judgements of which sentences make sense (or not) for several academic studies. Finding volunteers in English was a breeze and even other, less-popular languages were not an issue. I like that it is super easy to create a project on Prolific platform, which also allows multiple customizations (e.g. screening of participants, payment, etc.), as well as to reach a wide variety of participants. It is tought with an eye on academic researcher. The customer service is definitely a plus, since they answer quickly and solved the majority of issues I faced. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** Some advanced features might be slightly intricate to perform, e.g. running longitudinal studies requires to be done manually (unless there is a function that I do not know). However, the FAQ and help online describe well what to do. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can collect data in a very short time, involving participants with different profiles and nationalities. The much more consequential one is that running longitudinal studies takes a lot of manual steps to step up and manage making it time consuming and error prone. I'd be happy to share more about my experiences with that if you like. The 21-day auto-approval period also complicates longitudinal studies which involve more than two sessions because some participants are slow to complete subsequent the sessions. The interface is easiest to use, it includes a number of features that other platforms charge for, and tends to have higher quality data. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** I've experienced three downsides when using Prolific. First, the customer support is not great. Not bad, but not great. It can take a while to receive a response. Second, there is overall a lower pool of potential participants/workers which means that, if I want a specialized population, there may not be enough workers who meet those requirements on the platform. Third, it does cost more. While this is a practical downside, it may also be a good thing; indeed, I believe it is one reason that Prolific has higher quality data than other platforms. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** They have a *ton* of different screeners, which helps me very specific about the population that I wish to collect data from. This kind of control helps insure that I get the data I need. The use of screeners is also free, which is a big bonus. Data quality on other data collection platforms has gotten much worse over the years. With the exception of that TikTok-inspired surge a few years ago, data quality has remained relatively stable. ### 21. Experiment participants have been much more responsive, with higher quality results, than MTurk, and will often help me troubleshoot if something looks wrong with an experiment. The developers noticed last year that I was running multi-part experiments and reached out to specifically discuss our needs and how to incorporate them into the future of the website. It's extremely easy and intuitive to set up and use, and I've recommended it frequently. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** Most of my issues have been addressed over time, making it more straightforward to use the program. One reamining problem was that, if I was running a time-based study (ie, one that needed to be started at 7PM local time, for specific reasons), I would sometimes pause and unpause a study. When unpausing, sometimes there would be a significant lag displaying our experiment to participants again - once, we got no participants for several days, while the same experiment would often fill up on other nights. Customer service was very responsive trying to help find a solution, but I'm unsure what else can be done from a development standpoint. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Prolific for psycholinguistic studies, which for our purposes often take the form of listening to sounds and judging them. Not only do we find participants easily, sometimes they will give feedback that we incorporate into the body of the experiment. We also get participants much more quickly than using our university's student body. ### 24. I use it almost exclusively for our lab's research. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** The billing can be a little wonky, in that it rounds the final numbers up and down (such that a task that is $20.00 might show on an invoice as $19.99 or $20.01). I've also noticed that Prolific respondents take more time and effort than I am used to with some other services. I also like the real-time dashboard that lets you know how many people are currently doing a task vs. how many have finished. Will definitely keep using Prolific on future research teasks. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** The only downside I can think of is that recruited participants spend a bit longer than I would ordinarily estimate on tasks – this is good for quality but I have to bump up my compensation slightly to account for it. I've also gotten very speedy survey responses; usually less than a couple hours for my surveys, and I often have the audience demogrpahics whittled down to less than 2,000 potential respondents for a 100 person survey, yet it still happens fast. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** It can be a little intimidating at first to setup. However, it's really easy once you understand. They have an internal 5 question tool, but it doesn't allow for uploading photos, so that is limited. The best way is to use another free software such as tally.so to build your survey, and then prolific can send all the traffic to that survey for the data to be collected. You can link the "submit" button on the tally survey back to Prolific for them to record the results. It's amazing how smooth this works once you get the hang of it. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** We primarily use this to show designs to online shoppers in the age and other matching demographics of our target market. We show them photos of options and ask them to choose which one they like best and give us comments on their choices. It usually takes less than a minute or so for the respondents to fill out, but it gives invaluable data for knowing which design the market likes and why. With this tool we were able to come up with a design that the survey respondents overwhelmingly liked btter than the current bestseller on the market. I completed my PhD in India where there were no funds to recruit participants on prolific. My studies would take months to finish because of delay in recruiting. I started using Prolific only in the last 2 years after I moved to Germany for my postdoc. It is not an exaggeration to say that my research work has dramatically improved because of Prolific. **What do you dislike about Prolific?** That it doesn't have participants from countries like India. Related to my earlier point, I can now clearly see how disadvantaged my colleagues and friends in India are. Even though Indian researchers can technically run studies on Prolific, the pricing makes it practically impossible. Almost no Indian institute or University would be able to afford paying 300 pounds (approximately 30000 in Indian rupees which is roughly equivalent to a PhD student's salary) for a 40 minute study on 40 participants. This problem primarily arises due to the massive difference in currency. I am really hoping that someday Prolific will adjust the participant payment fees based on the local currency so that the benefits of prolific can be enjoyed by a greater number of people, especially in the global south. This is not really a complaint, as I said, I am extremely grateful for Prolific. This is just a suggestion from someone who has experienced both the upside and downsides of the platform. **What problems is Prolific solving and how is that benefiting you?** Not business problems since I am an academic researcher. But it is making it much faster for me to run studies. It is especially useful when I am trying new paradigms. I run them online and check if my hypothesis is correct, if the task is working correctly as it should. And then I collect brain activity data (EEG) on the same task.
