Progress Sitefinity is a cloud-first content management system (CMS) and digital experience platform (DXP) used to build, manage and personalize websites, portals and other digital properties. It is adopted by mid-market and enterprise organisations that operate multi-site, multilingual or regulated digital estates and need to balance marketing autonomy with IT governance and developer flexibility. Primary use cases include corporate websites, member and customer portals, authenticated experiences, integration-heavy workflows and consolidation of fragmented CMS deployments. Sitefinity supports marketing, development and IT teams through a shared platform model with role-appropriate tools and permissions. Key capabilities include: - Multisite, multilingual and multi-brand management with governance controls and workflows - Native customer data platform (Sitefinity Insight) for segmentation, analytics and personalization - 1,000+ prebuilt connectors and open APIs, Sitefinity Cloud platform integrates with your MarTech stack, CRM and enterprise systems in hours—not weeks - Extensibility using .NET and ASP.NET Core for custom development and composable architectures Sitefinity also incorporates generative and retrieval-augmented capabilities through Progress® Agentic RAG, enabling dynamic assembly of experiences from approved content to reduce manual production work while maintaining accuracy, compliance and brand standards. Additional operational benefits and deployment considerations: - Standardization and consolidation of CMS estates across business units or regions - Support for marketing, development and IT workflows without requiring a headless-only approach - Structured content for regulated or high-volume publishing environments - Deployment on-premises or as a managed cloud service on Microsoft Azure, reducing maintenance and providing security, scaling and compliance

"Great Support, But Search/Replace on the Website Needs Improvement"

1/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

Excellent customer service and technical support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

I can’t easily do a search-and-replace on a website. Reviewers can't see the difference between old and new versions of a file side by side. I can't to identify orphans in the system. Unable to locate pages that link to other pages in our site easily. We rely on third party tools now to do things we used to be able to accomplish in our old CMS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

It provides a secure platform for our websites. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Review Sitefinity CMS"

0/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

It's based around Microsoft Technologies so if you are use to these, it will feel familar. You work in MVC or .net Core Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

Sadly the company has taken the decision to remove it's lower tier subscriptions so it's not possible for a small business or individual to choose Sitefinity as their CRM; it's strictly for Enterprise Companies (i.e. those with very deep pockets).

This is a shame becuase it has killed off the community and by doing so there is no Marketplace to download ready made components. So you end up re-inventing the wheel creating components or widgets via code over and over again like Groundhog day. Such components are available already in the Wordpress store ready to use, so you can rapidly build a website without writing endless code that no doubt every other Sitefinity user has written already.

You only need to take a look at the Sitefinity marketplace (online) and compare to Wordpress to see there are very few integrations for Sitefinity and those that exist are dated and never get updated, because they only have their paid employees, rather than a worldwide community of contributers.

Hopefully Sitefinty can reverse this decision and have community and small business and individual licenses so that they can rebuild their lost community. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

It makes it easy to create web pages and play with layouts. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Product Team of Progress Sitefinity

[Editedit](https://www.g2.com/survey_responses/progress-sitefinity-review-9389514/official_response/edit)

Hi David,

Sorry to hear your misgivings about a solution, which you sound like you used to enjoy.

Indeed, the sunsetting of Sitefinity Standard and Small Business Edition was announced in mid-2022 and they were officially discontinued as of June 30, 2023. Progress offered alternatives to the discontinued options for both on-prem license holders and Sitefinity Cloud customers. Both exceed the core CMS functionality of the retired packages and include multiple optional add-ons on top, allowing adopters to comfortably access only the features they need.

Comparisons with open-source solutions will rarely be objective strictly on the number of community-contributed widgets and other ready-made components. Without getting into the quantity-vs-quality debate, at Sitefinity we choose to enable developers through native support of diverse presentation technologies in a decoupled API-driven architecture that can work with a wide range of frontend frameworks across .NET and JS.

The stand-alone ASP.NET Core renderer offers complete feature parity with MVC and gets an immense productivity boost from one of the best Blazor UI component libraries, developed in-house. With native support for Angular and Next.js/React, we believe we’re in fact expanding the Sitefinity developer community by bringing different technologies on board and catering to a broader set of use cases.

Several product releases since the sunset of the “lower tier” subscriptions have brought significant productivity and practitioner experience enhancements too. Overall, we have been investing in technologies rather than utensils—hoping the said technologies are equally accessible regardless of size, scope and budget.

Sincerely,

The Sitefinity Product Team

"Not worth it from my experience"

1/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

the wizzy-wig editors/drag and drop was easy to use and being able to write your own code and implement it was simple. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

The fact that you had to pay for every single update. it became overwhelming for my company and we ended up being behind over 20 versions, making the platform basically useless. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Progress Sitefinity:

Implementation was easy, keeping up with the upgrades was not worth it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

We needed a website platform that could integrate with our CRM. It was simple to connect and we never had an issue with the connection. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A small cms that leaves a lot of room for improvement"

1/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

As a developer / devops engineer, I can't think of anything I found good or outstanding in the Sitefinity product, I feel it falls behind its competitors in the majority of areas. If I had to pick an area I think that was the best part of the product, it would probably be feather (but even this lacks in many areas). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

The page based architecture (unlike umbraco / sitecore being more of am item based architecture).

The need for a lot of magic strings to make it work and gave poor error guidance when it didn't.

Building an atomic design was near impossible

Content being (generally) limited to a single widget (whilst reusability is possible, it is annoyingly complex to achieve)

The price tag (considering there are better cms' for less money imho)

The promotion pipeline

The lack of community add ons / support Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Progress Sitefinity:

Look at Umbraco, Episerver or Sitecore. I think they are far in advance of Sitefinity Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

I built a website for a large American education establishment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Endless Headaches"

1/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

We really like the ability to have multiple nested page templates that can be overridden and inherit from each other. This allows us to manage the large retail websites we maintain for US state specific products. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

Creating custom widget designers in AngularJS is downright awful. They will all have to be completely rewritten using Angular - whenever Progress/Sitefinity adds support for it.

There is no way to control the routing mechanisms to customize SEO urls - it only allows redirects to one URL. It also doesn't support an empty url for the homepage. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Progress Sitefinity:

We recommend others look for a lighter-weight CMS that is more customizable and easier to integrate other technologies with. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using it as a Front-end CMS for our Marketing department with personalization of experiences through their Digital Experience Cloud. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"An application with far too many revisions in too small a time-frame"

1/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

Who wouldn't like a robust CMS? With a plethora of templates and features, this tool has a lot to offer. For users who don't need to overhaul a template, or like our case... modify Master Pages, this tool should suffice. However, if you are required to go down that rabbit hole, be prepared to deal with poorly organized CSS content and a convoluted mess of templates and dependent files. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

With the exhaustive revision cycle, this application churns out entirely new version numbers 2-3 times per year. Our somewhat basic site was left in the stone-age (version 3.4) in 3 years. Revisiting it for updates, we were forced to either set up and entirely new server to migrate the site up to version 9.x or just move it to our own server for hosting and drop the CMS entirely. Recommendations to others considering Progress Sitefinity:

If you are working within the constraints of the tool, you'll likely not have problems. Also, whether you're actively updating content or not, stay on top of CMS version changes or you'll rapid be left out to dry when the CMS begins to fail. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

The larger portion of our organization wanted a simple solution to hosting and updating their website, so this tool was chosen as the home for that site. This tool was initially chosen so we could build out the base site and hand it back for others to make updates, however, those changes always ended up being done by a developer due to tweaks frequently needed on master pages. "Some good points, some bad points"

1/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

- The basic user interface

- The module builder,

- The page layout system (though some customers found it confusing)

- Many functions exists right out of the box Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

- The continious mysterious bugs and problems!!!

- User rights system is horrible and buggy

- The thing that if you wanted to do things in slightly different way than the sitefinity basic way , development could get very difficult and you'll have to strech the system and think of way how you can bend it to do what you want. Just like in Sharepoint (which I hated)

- Trouble with integrations and creating systems to for example updating a course catalog from outside source

- The news system

- Many out-of-the-box modules rely that customers are competent in creating html content (not true)

- Sometimes very slow

- Many stupid things, like not being able to link any kind of data to any module

- designers are difficult to customize Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Progress Sitefinity:

Still not a mature product. Many problems in development Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?

- Customer problems, from basic websites to educational institute course system

- Benefit: lots of ready stuff (that is difficult to modify...) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"SiteFinity is well outdated and a very poor choice for a CMS solution"

0/5

What do you like best about Progress Sitefinity?

Unfortunately there is not much to like about Sitefinity. By comparison to other modern CMS offerings it's interface at the administration level is slow and poorly designed.

I guess the fact that it actually renders pages is about the only thing that is positive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Progress Sitefinity?

The backend of the product is convoluted and difficult to locate features. Much of the advanced interface is bundled under Administration-Settings. It is very difficult to locate components. For example, to add a Dot Net user control as a widget requires:

Login-to back-end -\> Administration -\> Settings -\>Advanced -\> Toolboxes -\> Toolboxes -\> PageControls -\> Sections -\> YourDirectory -\> Tools -\> Create New

Sitefinity documentation is extremely poor. Locating any feature requires major amounts of work and research. Information on the net appears to have ceased in 2012/2013. There is almost nothing which directly relates to version 9 - the latest version. Therefore I find myself looking at instructions relating to version 4 of Sitefinity - rather than version 9 for which we have paid a lot of cash.

Sitefinity has so many annoying characteristics that I would not recommend anyone purchase it. There are far better offerings in the market-place, including free. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Progress Sitefinity:

What problems is Progress Sitefinity solving and how is that benefiting you?
