PrestaShop is a wonderful open source platform- all free and friendly. It's very easy to create multi-shops for more than one country and more than one language, and it's easy to build your own sub-sites in your online-shop with the help of some page builder modules. It's fully customizable and there are thousands of plugins to pick from to make it much easier to address concerns such as search engine optimization, email marketing integration, or payment methods to name just a few. What do you dislike?
I haven't had the best experience with customer service, so you may need to talk about it, use online support, or get someone working in it. Other than that, Their customer care is not perfect, and if you're a newcomer, you'll definitely have to suffer if there's a technological problem. There are a lot of freelancers and a lot of add-ons, sadly not all of them are accurate. In those years, I've had some security concerns, but nothing too serious. The thing I took as a negative side of it is that it's for big business and big projects. Our company was attempting to make a small online store on PrestaShop. The hook strategy is the better option to build great modules and customization, however there are a lot of places where they need to include hooks, maybe everywhere. They need to improve the api strategies, migrate to a better and modern structure of back/front, integrate quickly the Symfony core and migrate the front to Vue or React. Some missing hooks in strategical places had obligated us to require more time to develop customizations. The core B2B is the worst implementation because was thinking in France or Europe, however PrestaShop has been implemented around the world, then it could be better to allow a full customization, for example allowing dependent fields as Country -> State -> City -> Neighborhood and as the customer require. It's necessary to improve the helpers to allow that, better implementation to build forms and fields, there are a lot of manual work to implement some features. As a merchant, I have a love/hate relationship with Prestashop. I’ve been using it for 3+ years across 2 sites…While I think some of the 1-star reviews here are too harsh, I definitely agree that Prestashop is “buggy” when it comes to modules. Modules often conflict with each other and when you contact support there’s an “ownership gap” between Prestashop – The Module Author – Developer/Client. If there’s a problem, generally they all blame each other. But to be fair, there are advantages also. I have found it to be good SEO – I rank better than similar quality competitors on Shopify etc.. I believe this is related to it being a self-hosted solution as opposed to Shopify etc.. where you have less control. Don’t underestimate the value of this to small business – after some basic SEO work, you get a steady stream of free traffic and sales – something you won’t find as easy with hosted solutions. It is also infinitely customizable which is great. Unless you’re a developer, you will need to hire one – but the good news is that that can be found cheaply in places like India via outsourcing platforms. And once you have found one and done the work, it is generally stable and easy to use for day to day transactions. But be prepared you’ll need to spend a bit from time to time on fixing minor bugs, updating modules etc..On balance, I would say I’m not entirely happy with Prestashop, and considering other options. That said – I have not yet found a platform that “ticks all the boxes”. So, for now, I am stuck with Prestashop, but we’ll see. It’s actually a great shame – if they sorted out the bugs it could truly be the best self-hosted solution for SMEs.
