Import and export features are best for me. For example, yearly locker assignments are a breeze using this feature. PowerScheduler is a great tool with enough scheduling options to make it useful even for tiny schools like ours. We use automated scheduling, then the manual features to tweak. Demographic and contact information pages are not up to date, requiring us to create custom pages for what seems like basic information (cell phones, etc.). Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS: You will be happy with PowerSchool. It isn't perfect, but I am able to complete my work and I fully trust information pulled out, because we're very careful with information going in. PowerSchool allows me to be more productive. If you do implement PowerSchool SIS, take advantage of all training they offer. If your budget allows, consider purchasing some training (onsite or online). Users must be willing to put in the time to enter data into fields that may seem too time-consuming at the time. Everything. -The databases are a nightmare to wrangle--they just keep on adding tables instead of reorganizing them. You'll spend hours poring through documentation, which may not even be accurate. -Support is extremely condescending, but at the same time ignorant of the product. Don't expect them to help you migrate your data--hire a consultant if you feel you can't do it on your own. -Powerschool claims to have an integrated environment, but in reality, its myriad acquisitions are barely integrated, or integrated in an illogical way. The customizations and reports are more robust than some other solutions. This SIS seems to be better suited to a smaller district. They have many options for enhancements to the SIS, but at a cost. Power Teacher Pro seems to be a good fit for our district. UPDATE: We have been live for two months now, and are still experiencing issues with the software. The implementation process is impossible. They do not provide the level of support that I would expect from a company of this size. Many other SIS products, including the one we came from, have a much deeper understanding of the needs of a district. The data management and validation are nearly impossible to complete. They do not have data crosswalks for their other SIS (eSchool PLUS) to the Powerschool SIS. One department doesn't know what the other is doing. They want you to do most of the work yourself while they collect their money. We were promised so many things that are not coming to fruition. The entire process for us, from start to finish has been a disaster. It feels as though we are beta testers and not end-users of a "proven product." The system navigation is not user-friendly and requires SQL and HTML knowledge to perform basic searches and tasks. Reports are sometimes hard to find. Grades have to be sorted through to find anything. It is much more difficult to use than others I have used in the past and has less functionality. UPDATE: We have been live for two months now, and are still experiencing issues with the software. This software feels like a step back for our district compared to eSchoolPLUS. End users are still struggling to find what they need, reports are very difficult to find, accessing student data takes 10 steps instead of 1 or 2. There are so many illogical sequences to complete a task, that it seems like a waste of time and is counterintuitive. There are no true Progress Reports...a custom report was written so we could print a progress report, but they are simply 'Live Grades' and not a progress report as of a specific date and time. Data for state reporting (PIMS) was horrific...it took weeks to do data cleanup and we are still not close to done. User security leaves so much to be desired...it is very difficult to assign users with appropriate access privileges without giving them more than is needed. We have to have customized reports for our report cards and transcripts because what comes out of the box is terrible. We are still experiencing numerous integration issues with every single third-party software we use (Clever, Primero, Transfinder, PowerSchool Special Programs!?). There should be a bulk edit option, and the lack of one makes me want to enter grades in Schoology instead. The most beneficial thing that PowerSchool offers districts is the ability to customize it on the fly to fit your district's needs. The convenience of one place for assignments posted to communicate with students and parents is what I like most. I also like to ability to import projects from Teams into PowerSchool. It would be helpful if I didnt' have to scroll all the way through my list of classes after entering grades on one class. The ability to link PowerSchool to Teams is a great way to post assignments and have them turned in for a grade without needing to check two separate places. I appreciate that all student data is housed in a central location. Improvements have been made to the PowerTeacher Pro portion and tools that make grade input more convenient. When utilizing administrative features, searching for students is difficult. Powerschool is user-friendly. It allows for quick and easy grade entry. Commenting ability for individual assignments and individual students is useful. Powerschool interfaces with Power Teacher to allow me to enter student grades and view all of a student's information in one place. Oracle database, able to query things from back end using sqlplus or SQL Developer. Ability to modify PowerSchool front end pages is good. Latest versions of PowerSchool, version 19.11 and 20.4 do address normalization far better than previous versions we have used. Now on to 20.11.3 and Oracle database 12.2 or 19c. PowerSchool's FrontEnd GUI is great to be able to modify. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS? PowerSchool leaves much to be desired with ability to add / modify without using APIs, which most districts are not able to leverage. PowerSchool also has yet to have a way to archive out old data. Yes, we must keep data for students from Pre-K through 12th grade, including attendance, grades, discipline, etc., but without a way to archive-out data, your database can become quite large and difficult to test on. Let's face it, even with proper Indexing, when you query through numerous tables joined together to get the data you need for decision making, these queries can become unreasonable. We have several tables in the database with more than a million rows. There are many times that we can do things so much quicker in SQL but PowerSchool highly discourages this in PRODUCTION environments. Of course, you can do whatever you like on the Test and Development servers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS: Update data on PowerSchool Community to include only supported PowerSchool version, i.e. 12.x and 19.x. I feel it is useless waste of manpower to pull from PowerSource KB articles and use them for 12.x and 19.x when not all parts are usefull. I have recently discussed this with the PowerSchool LLC Support team and they saw my issues with some of their documentation. Their intent is to update the documentation, especially for versions 19.x and 20.x. I am in a wait and see pattern on this. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you? Keeping up with Student data in central database. We then use this to go into our Data Warehouse. We can push data back to PowerSchool, either through the APIs or through Data Import Manager. Some tables allow automatic imports, but not nearly enough, in my opinion. There are also limitations to the tables you can Insert or Update information into with the APIs. I would prefer to have the APIs available to all tables, not just a select few. But for the tables that the APIs can write to, it is a potent tool. Combining PowerShell with PowerSchool APIs allows us to do much automated work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
