We had to purchase Computer Logic Group to help us manage technical issues. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** I was promised that I could benefit from the plug-in, but this never materialized. ### 2. The grade book is pretty easy to use once you know where to look for the menu. Very easy to copy assignments from one class to another. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** I dislike how much time it takes to enter grades into the gradebook. There should be a bulk edit option, and the lack of one makes me want to enter grades in Schoology instead. If the two are owned by the same parent company then why is the gradebook in Schoology better equipped for online classes. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Powerschool lets us enter attendance and grades in the same place. It also helps parents stay involved in their student education by allowing them to check their child's grades from a parent portal. ### 3. Looking forward to having one integrated system. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** There is some content that is "Americanized" however we are learning about how editable much of the content is to make it suit our needs better. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Having an integrated SIS and Special Education Portal will allow for more seamless referral processes, will ensure data integrity for many legal process is consistent and in real time. (referral, IEP, IPRC,SEA, OnSIS etc). This means we will be managing fewer databases (and consequently doing less discrepancy management). Students who are new to our board or who are changing schools within our board will have a more seamless transfer of their information needed to facilitate their transition. ### 6. It's like they're doing an upgrade every week or every other week. It's led to the joke in our school that "PowersSchool takes the weekend off". We struggled through four months on our own until we received even rudimentary training. Too many windows to complete any tasks like Incident Management. I hear that its reliable and provides all the functionality that we need as a school system. It is used by everyone in our district so that is helpful to provide information sharing. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** Lots. As one who has experience with many different systems in past roles, its very user un-friendly. I'm old, and it reminds me of DOS. Its GUI is non existent. The fields are inexplicable and random. Some are reportable and some aren't. It lacks the "cross over" functionality for users like me who need to not only input data into the system, but report on it. In short, the reporting functionality is agonizingly insufficient. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We only use the system for reporting attendance and claiming bodies for Membership (BEP dollars). PowerSchool is great, but there are some drawbacks. They are frequently adding parts by acquiring other products. This is offered on more expensive versions, but needs to be offered at the lowest level as well as some companies do not purchase the more expensive version. **Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS:** It allows you to get a large amount of information at one time which is helpful when working in a large organization. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Able to easily track data and pull reports. It is quicker than calculating things by hand. It is also easier to collect enrollment data and view disparities that exist on a wider scale. ### 26. Quick buttons for grading options are also handy. Being able to make seating charts and arrange students just by clicking and dragging is very helpful with rowdy classes that change frequently. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** Individual teachers are unable to rename or group classes in certain ways. I have 1700 students and it is difficult to organize them all in a way that is useful. There should be an easy to use PS app so that teachers can download it and have it on their phones if and when the internet goes down. The "reports" section of the product is very disorganized and confusing still. For example if I need to run certain reports, the program will only allow me to run a report for all 1700 students rather than for a group of individual students. If I wanted anything else I would have to click from student to student individually, but I cannot make separate groupings, for example by grade level or teacher. Teachers should be able to give classes "nicknames" if the permanent system name has to stay the same. Also, some categories seem to repeat from powerteacher pro to powerschool attendance and that is very confusing. Perhaps the attendance site should be separate from the gradebook site, rather than sharing a single screen. **Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS:** Make sure to give your employees thorough PD on how to use this product. Not all at once, but in several parts. Some things require quite a bit more explanation than others, like setting up gradebooks with weights and grade categories. PD should be done throughout the year, at the beginning and end of each quarter to help teachers set up their gradebooks individually. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** A few times a year powerschool goes down and we are unable to take attendance via computer. This is not a massive problem as we are also able to do it by paper, however this I would imagine does create a lot of work for the front office staff who are usually dealing with other things all morning on the customer service end of things, eg parents and copies etc. It has not gone down in quite a while so this has not been a problem. Quickly printing grades or progress reports is a great benefit. I can pull reports at any time for my students and look up important information for them. For example I can see their school schedules, which enables me to do extra things like return forgotten lunch bags to their next class or find out their lunch time. It would also be handy if PowerSchool had a section for bell schedule and even playing the bell sound. Recently the bells at my school have not been working, so it is difficult to keep up with the times without the reminders. ### 27. The iPhone app also is extremely convenient to check attendance or look at a class roster when my computer is being used or unavailable. Printing progress reports for students is also an easy task to complete **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** The system we are currently using lacks many of the main important features. We cannot log detentions or parent contact via powerschool. These things would be extremely helpful. The interface could also be a little more user friendly. Making a new seating chart or trying to print in a normal-sized window does not always prove to be easy. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** The program is utilized on a daily basis for procedural tasks (attendance, seating chart, grades, class roster, etc.). We also use the java plug-in grade book via powerschool so that all of the grades are linked into one system. ### 30. I like the streamlined version and the fact that there's no more Gradebook app to download. Everything can be completed in one place! **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** In PT Gradebook, the set-up is a little clunky. Even in PTP, there are some features--transferring assignments--that are a few too many steps to be efficient. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** PowerSchool is improving their design and functionality so that schools and staff are able to find everything in one place. ### 32. It can be used on a computer or using a phone. Students and parents can easily access updated grades, including averages and comments from the teacher. This program shows what days were missed and which assignments are missed. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** PowerSchool is lacking an area for teachers and/or administrators to put in comments that are based on behavior. There is also no log for teachers and/or administrators to note calls home to parents. These are features that would be very beneficial and are available in similar programs. Teachers also don't have access to the nice grid schedules that are available to administrators. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Grading students, documenting attendance, providing student schedules. The benefit is to have all of this information in one program. ### 33. If we want to email parents we have to find the students info, find the email, then in our own email system, start/send the email. Would also be nice if it could integrate with Planbook somehow. I also appreciate the ease of submitting my attendances for every class period. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** I'm frustrated that it's not as flexible with other learning platforms. If it better corresponded with other platforms and took on that information within it, rather than needing for me to manually reenter information from one platform into PowerSchool. **Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS:** It's doable, but won't solve every online teaching platform problem. Students have to work efficiently on tests or assessments because the program locks them out quickly if they do not. I'm also able to see and view the data with ease. Both longitudinal and currently. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** I do wish that there was an easier way to create assessments. As a school counselor I use this for pre/post tests often with my classroom lessons and wish I could easily upload instead of having to cut, paste, drag, etc. Also, finding old assessments is challenging at times and could be improved. **Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS:** If you allow yourself time to create the assessments and then give yourself plenty of time to find them it's a pretty good system to use to block out cheating and give accurate, reliable data quickly. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Cheating, cheating, cheating. I don't have a huge issue with this as a school counselor, but have been able to recommend this program to teachers to eliminate any issue or temptation. ### 37. For instance when I needed to look at only the 5th graders I was able to separate it by category instead of weeding through all the students. I also liked that we were able to collaborate with other colleagues at the same time. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** When Powerschool was down it was really frustrating because there was nothing I could do and it was very challenging to communicate the issues I was having with the Powerschool expert. The gradebook system has a cumbersome UI. Once data is stored, only high level administrators can change that data--it's only an issue when a teacher needs to update a grade for a previous grading period within a school year. **Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS:** Take advantage of all of the modes available for stakeholder contact. This comes in handy when enrolling new students, you can see their demographic information, their grade history, subjects they have passed and completed and discipline records. I also find the different ways to search for students, You can either put there name in but if you don't know there name you can put in a simple formula to find who you are looking for. **What do you dislike about PowerSchool SIS?** PowerSchool does not always give you what you want or it does not pick up all the information you want. This is a flaw that they are working on but has not quite been fixed. Discipline records for students are hard to print if you want to print a complete list can be challenging. **Recommendations to others considering PowerSchool SIS:** Make sure you have the support you need from PowerSchool when you need it. Make sure you have all your questions answered before running the program. Make sure the information you need is complete and will run on PowerSchool correctly for you before letting all of your employees use it. **What problems is PowerSchool SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Now we have doors open to obtain the records state wide for students where before other software was not possible, that is a big benefit.
