Fundamentally crippled product **Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** January 26, 2022 **What do you like best about PostHog?** We liked the concept, but since the product cannot function at any reasonable scale, I can't say there is a lot that I like about it. **What do you dislike about PostHog?** We were enthusiastic early adopters of the product over one year ago, and I can now safely say it has been one of the worst business decisions we have ever made. I utterly regret trusting such an unfinished product with our valuable data. We started when the Posthog was running on Postgres. Despite throwing loads of Heroku resources at the problem, within weeks, the dashboards became unresponsive and unusable. All of the dashboard queries were timing out. They knew this, and there was hope in the new Clickhouse backed instances. They market "one-click deployment." The reality of getting the Clickhouse based Posthog cluster running is FAR from "one-click." We spent nearly a week debugging issues. After which, we were unable to transfer our data completely. We hopefully ran the migrator around 10-20 times, but it failed to copy all the data and always left huge gaps. We've spent over two months trying to get it to work. The team has appeared willing to help but has not addressed the problem. They usually say "looking into that" and then never reply. I think the product has spiraled out of control. I've burnt my fingers with this product, and I hope prospective Posthog users will avoid repeating my unfortunate error in trusting this product. Don't use this product if you value your time or your data. We've now abandoned the product and our data. **What problems is PostHog solving and how is that benefiting you?** We want to monitor our product analytics, but this dream has not yet been possible. We are less productive due to trusting in Posthog. Our business performance has deteriorated due to wasting development time trying to debug Posthog. **Official Response from Joe Martin:** > Thanks for sharing this feedback and I’m sorry you’ve had a poor experience using PostHog, especially as you joined as one of our earliest adopters. We’re an open source company, so we want to be transparent about exactly what we have done to address the important issues you raised: - We migrated PostHog Open Source from Postgres to Clickhouse in August 2021, as we could see that Postgres was not a scalable solution, leading to many of the issues you describe. While these issues shouldn’t arise for new Open Source users today, we know that the migration process for our earlier users from Postgres to Clickhouse was quite painful. We’ve improved our migration tool for that group and are sorry you had a poor experience. - Since PostHog launched our support load has grown exponentially. We now set clearer expectations about how and where we provide direct support for Open Source users. We've also launched tools such as Squeak! By PostHog to help users ask questions, find answers and help others in the community. - We used to market our self-host deployment as ‘one-click’ for Heroku backed by Postgres. We now recommend that users who want a simple, one-click solution use PostHog Cloud instead. We're increasingly careful not to mislead users about the complexity of managing a self-hosted instance, and have launched a marketplace of partners where users can get help from experts. - The number one priority for our Platform team in 2022 is making the self-hosting deployment process more straightforward. In addition to better tools, we have made a ton of updates to our documentation and will keep building better self-serve features there such as Docs Q&A.
