Web-based interface very convenient for managing various Docker containers. Very intuitive to use, many tutorials can be found online to make the most of it. Very simple to install and easily integrable with other systems.

I haven't encountered any problems so far, the only available language is English but it is very understandable even without having a deep knowledge of the language.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have several Docker containers (installed on Proxmox) and I manage them easily through Portainer.

  ### 3. Intuitive container management

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Fabian E. | Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 17, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

It has an easy and friendly user interface for its use, it does not require a high level of experience on Docker commands, since it is based on an intuitive visualization of images, networks and containers facilitating its performance

The technical support gives suitable answers, but takes a long time to respond. I had to resort to external means to clarify my doubts in less time

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We acquired it essentially to manage everything related to containers from their creation to their removal, however it provided us with solutions such as monitoring the performance and status of applications, it allows us to manage Docker and Kubernetes environments from a single place, speeding up the team work time

  ### 4. Great for small and medium projects

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Valentin F. | Solution Architect, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Easy of installation and the option to deploy microk8s.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

The fact that when/if you enable k8s you end up using an extra license?!

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has helped me deploy docker containers in a way that is secure and easy to manage. I also deployed a microk8s cluster that was amazingly easy to deploy and manage.

  ### 5. A convenient companion, even for power users

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Food & Beverages | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 15, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Even though I’m comfortable with the command line, I appreciate how Portainer offers a visual layer that speeds up tasks like container monitoring, log tracking, and stack deployment. It’s handy for quickly getting an overview of everything running, and I find myself using it when I want to save time on routine tasks or to get a nice overview of everything running.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

To be honest, for the kind of use that I have for it, which is outside of automated environments in which I prefer to have things more integrated into IaC workflows, there's really nothing that I don't like about portainer.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Portainer makes it so much easier to manage the basic apps I run in my homelab. Instead of jumping between terminal commands or tracking everything manually, I get a simple dashboard where I can see the status of all my containers at once. It saves me time and hassle, especially when I just want to check logs, restart an app, or make quick updates. It’s taken a lot of the stress out of keeping things running smoothly, letting me focus on experimenting with new setups instead of constantly managing the old ones.

  ### 19. Portainer Review for a Devops Engineer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 16, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Portainer makes container management incredibly simple with its intuitive interface. It allows seamless deployment and monitoring of containers, even for those without deep expertise in Docker or Kubernetes. The multi-cluster support and ease of use are great for managing complex environments.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Portainer's free version lacks some advanced features, such as RBAC (role-based access control), which can be limiting for larger teams. Additionally, its performance may suffer when managing a large number of containers across multiple clusters.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Portainer simplifies container orchestration by providing a centralized platform to manage Docker and Kubernetes environments. It eliminates the need for complex CLI commands, making it easier to deploy, monitor, and scale applications. This has significantly streamlined our DevOps processes, saving time and reducing errors in managing multiple containers across various clusters. Additionally, its easy integration with various CI/CD pipelines has improved our automation and deployment workflows.

  ### 20. Simplifying Docker with Portainer

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Ease of Use: Portainer offers a straightforward interface that is easy to navigate, even for those new to Docker.

Quick Setup: The installation process is simple, allowing users to start managing Docker containers within minutes.

Effective Stack Management: Portainer's stack feature simplifies the deployment and management of multi-container applications.

Robust User Management: The ability to create different user roles provides granular control over access to Docker resources.

Strong Security Features: Portainer's built-in security measures help protect Docker environments from unauthorized access.

Great for Home Use: Portainer's simplicity and ease of use make it a perfect fit for home lab environments. It's a great tool for managing personal Docker projects and experimenting with containerized applications.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Manual Docker Compose Import: While Portainer offers excellent stack management, importing existing Docker Compose files can be time-consuming due to the manual process.

Single-Point of Failure: The centralized web interface can be a single point of failure, limiting redundancy and availability. Although, this can technically be alleviated by using docker swarm/kubernets but cumbersome to setup

Limited Image Update Automation: Portainer currently lacks built-in features for automatically updating Docker images, requiring external tools or manual intervention.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Portainer has significantly streamlined my Docker management. Instead of manually dealing with Docker Compose files on the server, I can now easily manage my containers, networks, and services through a user-friendly web interface. This has saved me countless hours and reduced the risk of errors.

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Portainer makes managing containers so much easier. You can just throw the image url in an it will spin up a container very quickly. There is also an API edge server so I can integrate my frontend app to quickly make a service.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

I don't think there is a major issue while using Portainer but there should be a section where I can create a volume with the container without using stack

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Automated container management (Edge server) and multiple container cluster management

  ### 39. Managing containers made easy

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Portainer's UI gives a simple-to-read overview of the health of my unversity containers. These containers manage important tools that are indispensible to some students. Portainer makes checking up on these programs easy.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Portainer's update notifications get in the way of key UI elements sometimes, but it is not a major concern.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before Portainer, we used scripts to detect and display any container issues in a digestable manner in the terminal. For a busy student it quickly became clunky having to use terminal apps on their school laptop. With Portainer we are able to monitor and manage containers easily using the web rather than a small terminal window, leading to increased uptime for.

**Official Response from Tara Wrigley:**

> Thank you for sharing your feedback about Portainer's update notifications. We appreciate your input and will consider it as we continue to improve our product.

  ### 40. Great tool to help add needed services

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

It's easy to implement, easy to add and manage containers, and makes updating them quick as well.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Updating Portainer itself, keeping track of the network segmentation.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can add and remove containers to test them quickly and easily. It allowed me to explore new services for my users.

  ### 41. A must-have for anyone working with Docker

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jacob E. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Docker is oftentimes complicated, requiring a series of terminal commands to perform otherwise simple actions. Portainer provides a user interface that is both beautiful and functional. Our company services such as our DNS server and website can now be easily monitored via Portainer's interface.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Some aspects of Portainer seem to have some lack of thought to them. An example is the update prompt, which reminds the user to update. While not a bad idea, the prompt is loaded in half a second after the rest of the page, shifting the entire page down. The result is the click, to select a specific server in the dashboard, selecting a different instance. This is a very minor annoyance that could easily be solved by moving the reminder away from the top.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Portainer addresses issues we face with Docker. Docker is operated using the terminal, which can be difficult to monitor especially at a glance. Portainer solves this issue with a user-friendly interface. The benefit showed itself recently when our DNS server malfunctioned. Portainer alerted us by showing an "unhealthy," tag on the container, allowing us to take action. The issue could have been overlooked had we not been using Portainer.

  ### 42. Best container management

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Great interface, simplifying management of containers

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Limited third-party integrations, RBAC and scaling

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Reducing time and effort to manage containers

  ### 43. Portainer is a must-have

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 29, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

We use portainer to manage all our containers and to automate the deployment of new builds.
In fact, what we love about Portainer is the GitOps updates feature.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

The only feature that I think Portainer is missing is global git credentials. At the moment git credentials are associated only with a single user and that is very limiting.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For us, Portainer allowed us to automate the deployment for our internal services.

  ### 44. Portainer is a shining example of functionality and value. There is no comparison.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 18, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

Ease of access and presentation of features. I also particularly appreciate the compose feature, especially when combined with GitHub access.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

The Docker Desktop extension does not appear to support a license, and thus it doesn't appear to be able to save my GitHub credentials. However, this is a new way of using Portainer for me, as I generally use it running as a container from a docker compose file.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Portainer significantly lowers the entry barrier for learning how to use and manage Docker containers.
It provides easy access to status readouts of containers and service stacks, logs, etc. While these are obtainable from the standard Docker CLI, Portainer displays them from a web GUI that can show more information at a glance and provides many actions and information with just a couple of clicks.

  ### 45. Makes docker so easy

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dionei M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 16, 2023

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

I really like how Portainer makes docker service's management so much easier.
My prefered feature is the hability to easily implement stacks using git integration, as it gets really streamlined with other software development flows we currently use.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

I think Portainer misses an easy backup and restore feature - either options to export and import a full config file on the control panel, or options to automate a remote backup embeded on the tool.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It makes easier for us to monitor, deploy and update docker containers in our software development servers, avoiding a good amount of manual work and also enabling non-devops-experts to do a few procedures safely and easily.

  ### 46. Wonderful frontend for my docker standalone

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Felix S. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

As said, the ease of use (without the need of console) in a webinterface, whith the ability of multiple users and over a secure connection is a great win, especially in my very small docker environment. Also the recent check of running contrainers for current image versions is a nice benefit.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Missing a progress of docker-compose while starting up stacks (downloading image x%, starting...). Even the bare docker-compose output would be sufficient.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The need for console access for simple docker administrative actions

  ### 47. Perfect Container Management Tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Commercial Real Estate | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 02, 2023

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

It's a simple-to-use container management system that you can use from the web. It runs in Docker and allows me to manage all of my systems (I'm currently managing two Docker standalone instances, and a Kubernetes cluster).

Having a simple and well-documented web-ui makes managing these systems so much easier, as I don't have to do everything from the cli (command line interface).

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

Although it isn't specifically designed to do so, according to their own documentation, Portainer can work with podman (a docker alternative). I have tried this on several occations, and have had barely-usable results. The glitches and issues when using podman make it impractical to use Portainer over the normal cli.

If Podman implemented native podman support, it would cover all my needs for container management.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed a way to manage our cluster from a website rather than via the cli. Portainer is the most popular (and to my knowledge, the best!) way of accomplishing this.

  ### 48. Excellent tool to understand the Docker ecosystem

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Thejus P. | Senior Manager Technology (CMT), Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 21, 2023

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

- Ease of deployment
- Checks image updates
- Clear status messages

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

- TFA/MFA is missing, would be great to have this as an extra security measure for login.
- Uninstall of container, leaves behind files/folders under /portainer/Files/AppData/Config/ which needs to be manually removed.
- Have an option to archive App Template URL. Currently only 1 URL can be specified, it would be nice to be able to save/archives multiple URLs and select which URL must be referred or used by Portainer.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

To learn and understand the docker ecosystem, I installed the docker on my home server and used Portainer to manage about 13+ different apps.

  ### 49. Essential product for small businesses

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2024

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

- Ease of use
- Built-in monitoring
- Active Directory integration

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

- Pesters constantly about updating with an annoying banner
- Stacks feature does not support bind mounts, forcing the use of named volumes
- Lackluster default App templates (although source can be changed)

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Portainer gives a way to access and control Docker via a web browser, avoiding the use of SSH keys which can be complicated to manage and distribute. It's integration with Active Directory also simplifies the process by only needing one password.

  ### 50. Easy tool for managing Docker

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 02, 2023

**What do you like best about Portainer?**

I can manage all my VM's running Docker in one place. It is also nice that the program is open source, and that I can self-host it. Managing Docker containers/images/volumes in a GUI allows you to be more efficient and avoid wasting storage on unused resources.

**What do you dislike about Portainer?**

The Portainer Business Edition has some limitations. This is a bit silly since you host the software on your own hardware. However, a 5-machine limit does exist for free, and is enough for smaller operations. For most people and organizations, this is probably more than enough.

**What problems is Portainer solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed a way to manage our Docker systems (running Apache with PHP for a website and Nginx as a proxy manager) with a web GUI. We benefit from this as it is very easy for anyone to manage our complex container system.
