Especially if you know your MS Project. While pretty good - it has a long way to go. Offices with individuals who do not have a natural inclination toward technology tend to go around the software and try to submit their contributions/edits through hard copies and email because they don't understand how to use it. We organize all of our billibale things by sector. I can easily look at weekly and daily totals. I also like that i can view previous work weeks as well. This makes it easy to see where I've spent a lot of my work week time. From there I can better estimate how long similar work will take in the future. **What do you dislike about Planview Portfolios?** In our environment (not sure if all are like this) if we "sign off", we can't go back and make corrections. I would like to see a way to look at the total amount of time spent on a particular project. Currently, the only way i know how is to go week to week and make a running total. Various projects I work on can last up to years. **Recommendations to others considering Planview Portfolios:** Planview is a great way to track where you spent your work time with a quick look. **What problems is Planview Portfolios solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Planview to keep track of billing Service Requests and Project time in an IT based environment. This gives us a good way to track our time both daily and weekly. We can see quickly where we spent our time. We also use Planview for non-billable items like helpdesk tickets and non-billable projects. ### 29. It has a unique SAP Crystal Report feature that works very well in creating reports that shows valuable data for management. **What do you dislike about Planview Portfolios?** First time user will have a hard time differentiating between allocated work and authorized work. It's imperative for super-users to explain the concept behind these two areas. **Recommendations to others considering Planview Portfolios:** It will take some time to fully implement and roll this out. So take into consideration of training and ensuring super-users are aware of the product fully for vital support. **What problems is Planview Portfolios solving and how is that benefiting you?** This helps capture all the necessary data into one controlled environment. The users are able to fully control their RAG reports and have options to note all important tasks. Although it can take some time to fully complete this process, it will help organized the project in a more presentable view in the end. ### 30. The Resource Assignment Manager screen is great and allows a quick review of your team, and facilitates adjusting efforts on multiple projects. **What do you dislike about Planview Portfolios?** The oracle based constraint in terms of less tiles and reports than the SQL based. Not being able to manage big portfolios (only 200 projects or 200 resources per portfolio), it makes difficult to start analyzing from the top of the organization and to go down. **What problems is Planview Portfolios solving and how is that benefiting you?** A good understading of Progression Engine is a must to reinforce the good quality of data. So, data quality (dates, efforts) and Time sheet approval on time is being monitored and getting better. ### 31. The tool allows teams to provide as much or as little structure to the project life cycle as they desire. The ability to build multiple tiers and structures is also a benefit and makes this tool a good solution for teams managing areas with different goals (e.g. project teams vs application support or steady state teams). **What do you dislike about Planview Portfolios?** -performance was sometimes an issue with our instance -project managers had a longer than expected learning curve using detailed Financial Management components Sometimes we would run into issues with screens loading slowly or having to wait a long time for Microsoft Silver light to load/engage. **Recommendations to others considering Planview Portfolios:** Have requirements clearly vetted before beginning engagement with Planview Consultant. This will save a lot in consulting costs. Be open to slightly restructuring your processes to work the most efficiently with the tool instead of building too much customization or a 'like for like' approach. **What problems is Planview Portfolios solving and how is that benefiting you?** -managing multi million dollar project portfolio -developing meaningful dynamic reports Our management was seeking a portfolio management tool that would meet the needs of senior management, project managers and team members. The goal of implementing Planview was to eliminate the rework that was required to produce the specific reports that management was looking for by reworking/reformatting/extracting data from other tools or individual spreadsheets etc. that were in use by project managers and other team members. Having a consolidated source/tool that could perform all of these functions is a large benefit. ### 32. The reporting solution out of Planview is also strong, given that the data warehouse is built and managed properly. **What do you dislike about Planview Portfolios?** There is a learning curve, as with any software, but it is less intuitive to navigate for new or unfamiliar users. If users are not fully engaged in its use for project management or they are not properly trained on the tool, it leads to constant re-training and re-work. It is not as useful of a tool if its only purpose is for time recording to projects, due to the learning curve and the functionality that is there but not utilized, adding to user confusion. **What problems is Planview Portfolios solving and how is that benefiting you?** We were able to track and bill all IT resource time spent on projects in each phase of the WBS, as well as time spent on smaller efforts not classified as projects. This enabled us to bill properly for time spent and enabled Project Managers to properly and easily track IT labor spend in their budgets. We also were able to run reports on projects and resources for various needs and to support business decisions. ### 33. Adding resources, adjusting resources, expanding work efforts, etc.. are all fairly easy to do. **What do you dislike about Planview Portfolios?** Reporting is very restrictive based on role assignments. I also had a huge issue a few months back using their cube feature. I was locked out of different modules that I should not have been. Customer service is also not the most responsive. **Recommendations to others considering Planview Portfolios:** Do your homework. Take a very long look at other options within the industry. When setting up training, you must absolutely insist on training to be done at the software company's training area. On site training with a useless demo of the system is a joke. Our trainer went way too fast and covered far too much material in a couple 1/2 day sessions. It was a train the trainer approach and it the conclusion of the training, only 3 of us walked out of there actually using the product **What problems is Planview Portfolios solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are not using Planview anymore, but I do not know if it is because of an internal decision or outside mitigating reasons. ### 37. Implementation time and administration staffing needs will depend on how much customizing you do. As a training instructor and administrator of the software, I found PlanView easy to use and train. Dependent on project team to enter their updates (status, documents, approvals) to move to the next steps within the application and keep current. May not always reflect the current status if PM and project team does not enter the required information. The application is only a good and the information being entered into it. I still rely on MS Project for scheduling as i have more control of that. **Recommendations to others considering Planview Portfolios:** Give it a try.
