"Great tool for editing text"
5/5
What do you like best about PerfectIt?

The accuracy of the changes and speed of implementation is excellent. I also appreciate the custom checks we can create. This really helps my specific use case. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

Although changes are accurate, a check will sometimes be missed and requires a second pass of the reviews. I would appreciate a function to include already built notes added to changes as a Word comment. Not really a problem, but more quality-of-life feature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Incredibly useful and fun tool"
5/5
What do you like best about PerfectIt?

PerfectIt surprised me. Deeply skeptical of editing software that purported to assist my already thorough hunt for inconsistencies, I resisted it for a while. When I finally decided to try it, I began to be regularly astonished at the tiny errors it found that I had missed. I now happily rely on it with every project to “perfect” my edited documents, and I also have fun using it in the process. In fact, my favorite part of editing a document is polishing it with a run through PerfectIt. It’s incredibly fast, and I appreciate that it doesn’t critique the writing – it only finds instances where rules are not followed consistently. I am thrilled with the Chicago Manual of Style check and how it helps quickly pinpoint the specific style points behind suggested changes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

PerfectIt seems to overzealously “find” instances of a missing serial comma. I dislike how it corrects hyphenated words, so I make those changes manually. And as of yet, there is no APA Style check. There is an option to create a custom style sheet based on APA Style, but I never seem to have the time to figure out how to do it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Excellent help for writers and editors"

What do you like best about PerfectIt?

PerfectIt saves a lot of time in editing, and it helps with consistency. When there are options in spelling or punctuation, it's hard to remember by page 300 which spelling was used on page 3. Having PerfectIt point out discrepancies is very helpful. The discrepancy may be intentional, such as dad beginning with lower-case when the text reads "her dad" but being capitalized when the character addresses her father as "Dad." However, PerfectIt makes you look at each incidence to ensure it is correct. Now that the Chicago Manual of Style is included, PerfectIt is even better. It saves the time and effort of logging into CMOS to check something, and anything that saves an editor time is good for the editor and the client. As an editor, I can focus on the actual content of the manuscript and let PerfectIt do much of the work in checking spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style.

Authors will find PerfectIt very valuable in preparing manuscripts for self-publication or submission to agents and publishers. Even if an author plans to hire a professional editor, she can save money by running PerfectIt before sending the manuscript to the editor, thus reducing the time required for the editor and the cost for the author. What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

I haven't found any downsides. I'm sure there is something that could make it better because nothing is perfect. But right now I don't know what to recommend. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A fantastic consistency checker for editors and writers"
5/5
What do you like best about PerfectIt?

I have been using PerfectIt for several years and cannot now imagine copy-editing without it. It's a hugely helpful tool to run at the beginning of a project to highlight issues that need attention during the main edit, and I always run it again at the end to catch anything I may have missed. I greatly appreciate the fact that I can customise style sheets for different clients so that I can be sure I'm following the right style guide for each, whatever its foibles. It's worth every penny! What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

Very occasionally it will freeze when checking a particularly long or complex document, but dividing the checks into smaller chunks normally helps to overcome this, and the customer support team is helpful and prompt to respond if needed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Best Editing Bang For The Buck"

What do you like best about PerfectIt?

As a Microsoft Word user, PerfectIt is the best proofing and grammar solution I've found. I proof and edit columns and articles all day long, and have tried other services such as Grammarly. However, PerfectIt goes WAY beyond Grammarly, Word's own built-in routines and other such apps. It's a comprehensive, one-stop shop for both style, grammar, accuracy and consistency. PerfectIt's ability to detect mis-matched abbreviations, for example, and quickly fix them is an outstanding feature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

The only real downsides, as a Mac user, is that we have to use the 'cloud-based' version while Windows PC users have an actual module inside of Word itself. However, that is a small quibble as it still works in the same manner. I would also like to see PerfectIt available as a system-wide service in all apps that use text, such as Mail, Messages and other word processors such as Pages or TextEdit. Again, this is more of a "that would be nice" than a deal-breaker. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about PerfectIt?

PerfectIt adds polish to my legal writing as it catches even the smallest of errors. It gives me the opportunity to present my best the very first time. "Couldn't be without PerfectIt now!"
5/5
What do you like best about PerfectIt?

I was so glad to discover PerfectIt when it was recommended to me on an editing course. As a small indie publisher, PerfectIt is my second pair of eyes. I use it to help with editing fiction - sometimes in documents of up to 120k words. I use it as my first sweep of a document to tidy it up and catch any inconsistencies before I begin line-by-line editing. I use it again at the end to catch the inevitable errors that creep into the editing process before we proceed to typesetting. I couldn't be without it now! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any downsides - other than I'm aware that I'm probably not using all the features and capabilities of the programme and am just using it 'as is' - but that works for me. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Required for any professional editor!"

What do you like best about PerfectIt?

I can use the US, UK, and CAD styles depending on the client, but it also highlights inconsistencies and lets me decide. It doesn't waste my time with grammar checks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

The only downside for me is that as a Mac user, I can only use the online cloud version, which isn't quite as robust or as quick as the Windows version--but it's still worth it! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Amazing Product for Anyone Needing to Edit"
4.5/5
What do you like best about PerfectIt?

I've been using PerfectIt for a few years now. I was almost going to stop using it but then they came out with the integration with the Chicago Style Manual and it became a definite must-keep for me. I use the software all the time. The WORD integration makes ensuring documents are consistent si one of the most important features of this great software product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

Although I am thankful that PerfectIt has Chicago integration, I also wish they had better style sheets for other commonly used style manuals like the MLA and APA. As someone who primarily writes professionally in APA, it would be nice if this feature was available. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A lifesaver if you work with a style manual"
5/5
What do you like best about PerfectIt?

PerfectIt will make your work more consistent when used out of the box, but it comes into its own when you start using style sheets.

I work with many institutional clients, all with different style rules. Without PerfectIt, I'd have to spend so much longer checking the style manuals. Does your client insist that you write "Côte d'Ivoire"? Not a problem. Just tell PerfectIt to flag "Ivory Coast" and "Cote d'Ivoire" (with no accent) every time they come up and they'll be flagged. Do you have one client that requires numbers 0-9 to be written as words and another that requires words all the way up to 19? Not a problem. Just set the correct rule for each client.

I've run my checks on documents edited by some of the top revisers in institutions, and it has spotted things that they hadn't spotted.

If you can learn the basics of using wildcards you can create some particularly powerful rules. For instance, one client sends me texts that often have notes under figures and graphs that start with the word "Note:". The note should end with a full stop, but they often forget. Not a problem. I just add the following wildcard rules, which looks for "Note:" at the start of a line, followed another line break without a full stop before it: ^13Note\:[!\.^13]@^13.

I highly recommend PerfectIt to any author, translator or editor. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about PerfectIt?

It still has some bugs. For instance, I added some comments to the rules in "Settings", but now it won't let me add any more, and I can't even remove one in which I mistyped something. I've also found that "Except before/after/for" rules are not 100% reliable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
