PerfectIt allows editors to focus on the content and meaning of a given text and is especially useful when dealing with longer texts. It runs automated checks on all the inconsistencies that would require hours to eliminate: abbreviations/acronyms and their expansions, (standardised) spelling, table and heading numbering, spacing and much much more. It simplifies navigation and viewing of these elements across long documents. It can be customised to each text's requirements: either by using the existing preloaded styles (EU, UK, etc.) or by modifying these at many levels to accomodate variations. PerfectIt is extremely user-friendly and since they added the Chicago Manual of Style option, it has become one of my go-to tools to use. There aren't many downsides that I have found while using this program. The biggest one for me is more of a nuisance than anything else. As a romance editor, I have many words in my manuscripts that get flagged as possible word choice errors that truly aren't. I've been using PerfectIt for 3 or 4 years now, and I can't imagine ever going back to editing without it -- it has become an indispensable part of my process. It does a great job of spotting inconsistencies in a text, especially book-length manuscripts. The customizable style sheets are invaluable, and so is the CMOS add-on option. I don't have a single complaint about PerfectIt -- which is incredibly rare. (That said, I'm on Windows; I've heard it's not as reliable/useful for Mac -- but I can't personally attest to that.) PerfectIt ensures error-free documents. It checks for consistency within documents and can be adjusted to suit various styles (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style) and English language preferences, for example, US American or British English. It saves time and catches errors that even the most experienced editors will occasionally miss because we are only human and have lapses in concentration. I've used PerfectIt for a few years, and it is an indispensable part of my work process as a professional copyeditor. It's especially great for catching consistency issues and helping me double-check that I've not missed anything. I particularly like how easily it can integrate with my Chicago Manual of Style subscription for an added layer of checks. IMO, the most helpful feature of PerfectIt is the thoroughness with which it double-checks multiple formatting and writing styles at once allowing you to consider which option to choose. As a technical writer/editor, it is impossible to compare everything and ensure one style was used while the remainder of the document differed. This software does that for you. It is preferable to run the checks within the file itself rather than uploading everything into a cloud for later revisions. It is the perfect tool for anyone who writes to have it at their disposal. Incorporating your customized style guide or a universal one such as Chicago and creating a table of changes made while also tracking additional changes is an added bonus. PerfectIt has benefited me while working on my MA because I didn’t have time to ensure every comma or apostrophe matched throughout a document. What problems is PerfectIt solving and how is that benefiting you? PerfectIt runs many kinds of checks in a very short time. I have PerfectIt installed as part of my MS Word menu. I translate many scientific manuscripts into English, so in one click, I run PerfectIt after I complete my translation. PerfectIt highlights all the inconsistencies, such as hyphenation, spelling variations, and capitalization. It tells me how many times I have used each variation and where each one is, so I can select which one I prefer. It is very helpful for abbreviations and acronyms, mainly because it tells me if the abbreviation was defined the first time mentioned, so I can correct it if there is any mistake.
