I like that Pentaho is a drag and drop environment. Like everyone else, our organization has a ton of data, which is stored in a less than ideal manner. Historically, we'd have to create custom joins to get the data we need, but for those in the organization who were not comfortable with joins, they'd either get bad or no data. Pentaho makes this easy for users to get exactly what they want. The dashboard reporting feature could use some visual enhancements. I've only played around with it a few times, but I've not yet figured out how to apply a global filter to all reports within a dashboard, so this feature could be made more intuitive, perhaps. The interface needs some upgrade. It looks a little old and un-engaging. Also the application requires a lot of physical memory and hence slows down the operations. while creating transformations is easy, working on the job creation in pentaho is a cumbersome task and takes a while to complete. Pentaho's ETL tool is very stable when compared to something like SSIS. I find SSIS to be very brittle and intolerant of changes to source files, etc. Whereas, with Pentaho, when something changes, it is usually very easy to quickly edit the ETL and get right back to work. The built-in report building tool for pre-formatted reports is archaic. It is as if they just don't think people need something better. Here, SSRS is much superior to it; however, the analysis reports (on-the fly reporting) are great, so it depends on what you need.
