The system is buggy and things break randomly, so I'm always dealing with unexpected issues when staff come to me with problems. For instance, changes in employee profiles aren't automatically updated as you'd expect, leading to tons of extra work like manual corrections and internal audits. There's no test environment either, and it feels like features that could be really helpful are added too late. Plus, their support isn't great. I feel like we're paying a lot just to be part of their user experience team. It also doesn't integrate with any other tools, which is another big downside. Setting it up was a nightmare, especially since Paycom doesn't offer any on-site support to help you understand the system. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. **What problems is Paycom solving and how is that benefiting you?** Honestly, Paycom creates problems for me. It leads to random issues that I only discover when they occur, causing additional work like audits and communication with vendors. Technology twenty years behind the times **Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2026 **What do you like best about Paycom?** Paycom has made timeclock and payroll processing more straightforward for us, and given our employees easier access to related documentation. **What do you dislike about Paycom?** Nearly everything else about the system is patently awful. We are a lean team and are in this tool every day, and we still cannot get it to work for our needs, which Paycom has been unresponsive to when we express that concern, to the point we are likely reverting to the tools we used before the implementation. In fact, during sales and implementation, we were told things that the system could do that it absolutely cannot do, and feel like we were sold vaporware. This tool is at least 20 years behind the competition in this space, and is not terribly concerned with closing that gap. The ATS in particular is antiquated and possesses absolutely none of the features of a modern ATS. The UI is unintuitive and often takes 10 steps to do what can be done in two - I know because the three other tools I've used in the last five years can do it in two (or fewer). The implementation was also concerning. I asked why we weren't running a parallel payroll with our old system before implementation and was told "that's not how we do it". Fortunately, we ran an off-cycle payroll before our main one to find the *dozens* of problems that would have surfaced in the main payroll. And when we flagged these, there was a total lack of urgency on Paycom's part. They wanted us to run the payroll and fix the problems after, but then we would not have been certain they were fixed before running our main payroll. Support is responsive, but does not take the time to understand the core question before answering reflexively. I don't have to manually keep track of so many things like employees' hours, sick time, and vacation time. The timecard search is another feature I value a lot since it allows me to approve or deny punch change requests and approve time cards for payroll. Also, the initial setup of Paycom was very easy. **What do you dislike about Paycom?** In California, an employee can sign a form to work up to 6 hours without an unpaid 30-minute break, which is legally allowed. However, our HR manager mentioned that Paycom can't support this, and I'm not sure why. Many employees, including myself, prefer having this option. **What problems is Paycom solving and how is that benefiting you?** I don't have to manually track employees' hours, sick time, or vacation time. I hate that they charge us money to update file feeds with the carriers. If we need to do a tax amendment or amendment with earnings, Paycom charges us money to do that when other HRIS systems like UltiPro do it for free. Our previous Customer Service Representative misinformed us and made changes that impacted all employees' accrual balances. Despite the form being released, no system update was made. When we contacted support, we were instructed to make manual edits, but the solution did not work. It is frustrating that a payroll company did not implement IRS form changes on day one, and even more concerning that there was no reliable or compliant way for clients to update the form themselves. Example: departments have to be set up in 2 places, on 2 spearate pages in the profile. Another example of poor customer service. There was an issue with the system which prevented us from processing payroll before the deadline. Paycom charged us $50 fee to push the payroll through after hours. We escalated to a manager, who told us there was nothing he could do, since payroll was submitted after the designated deadline. Again Paycom took no responsibility that the delay was caused by an issue in their system. I found customer support to be lacking and almost combative at times. There was no accountability when Paycom made failed. Example: NYMCMNT Tax - This tax wasn't set up correctly in Paycom and they didn't deduct or remit the tax payments to NY. We recevied a debit for over $12,000 without notice for taxes they failed to manage properly. Their Tax support was non-existent. We were paying for tax support but recevied very little. Example: We submitted a request to have them register for a couple of states for us, NM and VA. They not only failed to set up the state tac accounts for months, they also did not communiate with us that there was an issue with the registrations. It took over 6 months for NM registraton to be completed, which casued us to recevie penalties and interest for non-filing. Paycom did not take responsibility at all Having learned a tough lesson with NM, we were more proactivley engaged with Paycom while they managed the tax registration for VA. Again we did not receive any communicaitons from Paycom that they ran into an issue. We followed up with them several times regarding the status before we finally recevied a response that there was an issue. The registraton was also completed late causing us to receive penalties and interest fro late filing. Again they took no responsibility at all. Paycom also has very limited integration options. They were unable to integrate with our 401K or benfits providers. If we wanted integrated system we had to switch to them for benefits and 401K. Which costed a lot more that the providers we were using. They nickel and dime customers for everything. They charge full payroll processing rate every payroll, including off-cycle payrolls. With many other services, customers pay a monthly service fee regardless of the number of payrolls a cusotmer processed. They do not charge for off-cycle payrolls. If they do charges a processing fee for an off-cycle its at a significantly lower rate. Due to these any many other issues, we chose to leave. Our employees do not have to log into multiple sites for benefits. In my industry, we get notified of new hires the day before, so the ease of onboarding is so important. As well, the timekeeping system is so user-friendly, and most employees clock in and out on their phone. Aside from login issues, I receive little feedback with user issues. Finally, having users be in charge of their direct deposit really prevents fraud. There are so many scams of people impersonating employees asking to update their bank account information, and staff cannot change it because users must do it themselves - a great control! **What do you dislike about Paycom?** On the administrative side, I think there are more straightforward ways to setup a centralized document vault, and to easily see who can see which documents. It helps you address items quickly. I appreciate uploading documents that employees need to sign and that they are able to go back and review them (ie. offer letter, employee handbook, etc.). **What do you dislike about Paycom?** We need harassment training and that was not offered to us in the beginning. So it has now put us in a place to have to purchase a la carte or look outside. The way tabs are organized is challenging when you're trying to find a certain field. Overall it's cumbersome. There are too many clicks and buttons that don't even make sense. Also, when you receive an error message, a lot of times you have no idea how to fix it. We have to reach out to our Paycom rep constantly to troubleshoot, which is very time-consuming. We were hoping for the system to alleviate some of the administrative burden, but the opposite is true. It's very easy for employees to request time off, adjust their taxes, and update benefit HSA amount. When processing payroll it's very easy for me to identify pay issues because of features like the check register, summaries, and comparison to a historical payroll. It's very easy to pull in CSV files into payroll for different payroll deductions weekly. **What do you dislike about Paycom?** The random "glitches" we email our Paycom contact about. It may be something pulled in weird, and they don't know why and simply label it as a glitch. **What problems is Paycom solving and how is that benefiting you?** Paycom keeps track of all requested time off which alleviates us having to use another tracking system.
