I was not able to get the level of support I needed as a small business. The sales team was helpful, but that's where it ends. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** They could not handle our payroll, our payroll is not that complicated. We are now paying the same price with a company that can handle our payroll AND HR and recruitment. I'm glad we decided to leave Paychex. The sales team was great, but the implementation team was hard to work with. They made it seem like our payroll was really complicated, in reality it's not and ADP is able to handle it with ease. We were constantly having to reach out to customer support and the company should focus on providing better training. We had several account managers and they were not responsive via email. When I would have to call in to ask for assistance they would tell me that they would check in with my assigned account manager so I was just bounched back and forth and this did become frustrating. If you are someone who expects great custommer support and service, this might not be the solution for you. The seamless integration is good. The platform is open architecture but some basic funds (i.e., PORIX) are not available. What is up with that? **What do you dislike about Paychex?** Hold times are ridiculous. I sometimes find myself questioning the answers I am given. One of my plans had basic questions on Safe Harbor and I needed to re-read documents and correct the provided answers. I do NOT have time for this. I am also frustrated by how hard it is to find out fees. The 408b2 tells the reader to refer to the GIS. Just come out and state your value. Let the user judge if they want to use the platform. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** This platform is trying to solve the 360 integration issue between payroll and 401k. But what is the use of solving that if your call center staff is not seasoned and if the hold times are enough to damped interest? ### 13. They're able to do 401k, worker's compensation, and payroll of course. It's beneficial for startups to be able to get several services from one company. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** One of the downsides to Paychex is they aren't very scalable. There are tons of options to configure staff profiles. We have found some features don't work quite the way we were promised when purchasing. Almost no downtime. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** Very cumbersome onboarding process. Admin have to input staff information into system. Then employees have to create a user profile and enter all the same information. User account creation is extremely overcomplicated for many end users. No good resources for onboarding. Completely disjointed experience across each module. Designated support lines for each module. Need help with Payroll? Call one number. Need help with Time and attendance? Call another number. Have a question about how Payroll and Time and Attendance interact? Nobody knows. I've been told that this system is better for companies with under 50 employees. I found that the disjointed experience existed when we were at 35 people. I've also experienced no outreach, besides sales. Nobody checks in to see that things are running smoothly. So, maybe this could be a better system, but nobody there is helping us to improve our experience. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** For now, it is processing our Payroll and we use it to track time and attendance (including time off). Payroll integration with check distribution is helpful. This past year when we were trying to get ERC money by including it on our form 941, they had no idea how I could go about making a change to a form they fill out automatically. Entering in time is the best feature, I like that I can resize columns, save different layouts, etc on the time entry screen. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** Let's see - If I click on Help > Help, this function doesn't actually work on my Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox browsers. Sometimes one thing may work on one browser, such as "Search", another time something else may work on another browser, such as browsing alphabetically, but the help site overall is very poor and doesn't really do much good. Yes, I have tried no fewer than four browsers and no fewer than three computers, in various combinations. Training: There's no way to search for the specific topic you're interested in, you can only browse. And the training is very basic. Contact: You would assume there would be a "contact" button for issues. There isn't. If you click on Help and Having Trouble, it gives you a number to call, but no email so you can send your issue and get on with your day. The impression that I get from that, intended or not, is that they really want to discourage me from contacting them. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** I made the decision for our company to switch to Paychex when we moved from Quickbooks Enterprise to Sage Intacct, as supposedly Paychex integrates with Sage Intacct. I have asked how to get my payroll information into Intacct but as of yet I have no answer. Also be aware it can take months for the benefit portal to be available for your employees when switching to Paychex Benefits. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** Well so far - none. All design & streamlined, but self-driven tool **Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Accounting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2018 **What do you like best about Paychex?** I like the 2-step verification security login, the user verification codes, the speed, the dashboard and the ability to run multiple reports directly from the payroll entry screen, check preview. Recent updates this month may allow more capability and control for user but likely to replace hired people altogether. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** State Q1 tax forms missing from Quarterly review, but Federal forms are stored and ready to print. Unfortunately, Paychex has gotten less and less personal. No one on one payroll agent to connect to. In Paychex Flex, I have no direct contact, only a customer service number and the assigned account. In the past, under more simplified payroll contracts, the Paychex agents were accessible either by fax, by direct line or by e-mail. This connectivity is breaking down more and more. No live chat, which is understandable since payroll should remain secure so not any live agent should be allowed to respond. It's sad nevertheless that we give up the personal service (because payroll can change with circumstances and the technology is not flexible (ha! Flex is not flexible).. For example, it is very difficult to locate the screen to allow for editing/customizing the payroll grid. No workflow available in Paychex Flex yet to simplify small business processes to incorporate benefits administration and tie with payroll. That is why an assigned, live agent should code the proper setup instead of users who don't have a background in HR or accounting processes. Filing the 5500 is not simplified at all by Paychex Flex. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** It seems hopeful. I am excited about new updates this month, as I have yet to try them. I also recommend outsourced payroll rather than in-store payroll mainly on account of file-management, storing of important docs in cloud or business platform rather than in-house. Reporting tools are everything and help you manage through audits on the local, state, insurance level or claims or HR matters. Wish I could backtrack here to my suggestions because many payroll service provider tools neglect pay rate history reporting, and this needs to be a critical report draw for users. When managing employees, one difficult aspect is consistency in pay raises and implementing fairness. Also, managers need to constantly adjust times in the system because the app has errors all the time. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** Look into all the options and do a trial if possible. It is convenient to be able to manage retirement online, and easy to login, make rollovers, requests loans etc. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** The platform itself is not very user intuitive. At my last job we used the Principal Financial and the online platform and quarterly statements were so easy to use and understand. I've been using Paychex for nearly 3 years and when new staff members come on board I usually volunteer to help them get set up and navigate the platform. It's hard to tell how much the automated service is costing, how much you are putting in vs. return on investments. I wish we would switch to a different system. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** Perhaps for other features Paychex Flex is a good system, however for using it for retirement, it is sorely lacking in user friendliness, ease of understanding where and how your money is doing and tools to help you make good financial decisions. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Paychex as a platform for managing retirement, it gets the job done but isn't very user friendly. There could be other aspects of Paychex that work really well, but the retirement portion is cumbersome and difficult to navigate. I also don't get quarterly statements (emailed or in the mail) about how my retirement is doing, or help offered as to if my funds are on track. It makes it very frustrating when you have several questions about the entire system, and have to reach out to several different people to get them answered...I also don't like that they have 3-4 different time systems, and it's not clear which one you have (I came into a company that already had Paychex Flex in place, so I wasn't part of the initial setup). It also took 4 weeks for me to have the right access. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** Whoever is going to use it should be very tech-savvy, and have extreme patience for having to contact multiple support people to get your questions answered. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Paychex Flex primarily for time tracking for hourly employees, and payroll for everyone. We also have the HR module and are planning to add performance reviews to the system. ### 37. It has been 5 weeks and 5 payrolls since we implemented Paychex and we still have not had a payroll without benefit deduction errors. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** The lack of transparency. We though we were going with a PEO. However it seems the salesman failed to inform us that the benefits package was not inside of the PEO but was with Paychex Insurance Agency (PIA) so we are part PEO and part not. We still need to review and monitor the benefits invoices and send payments to the insurance companies. When an employee terminates we still need to notify Paychex and the benefit's carrier. However the quote we were provided was for a PEO PIA had difficulty providing us with accurate benefit rates and employee enrollment information. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** None yet. ### 38. I took to twitter, where a CSR talked to me, but gave me no real information about what I should do. In fact, they didn't even know who I should contact to be able to log in. You shouldn't be able to request a password for an email that isn't connected to an account - they should have stopped you right there and told you there isn't an account set up yet. Once I requested a password because I wasn't sure if I had already created an account (turns out I didn't), I was actually locked out of creating a real account. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** Nothing, considering I can't log in. ### 39. The Preview Report Writer function, once you get the hang of it, is fairly robust. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** Paychex Preview cannot handle cross period reporting so if you have a fiscal calendar you are in for a world of hurt. Paychex has an integrated system and their component systems, Preview, HR Online and Time & Labor Online do not talk to each other perfectly. Setting up the user accounts for employees is another nightmare. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** Check out the competition to make sure that Paychex is the right payroll/HR system for you. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our payroll runs from 250 employees up to about 350 in the summer. We use Paychex Preview to pay them and Paychex to do the tax filings. We are also using Paychex's ESR Service to do our Affordable Care Act employee tracking. ### 40. The software is outdated compared to other payroll vendors and my rep is harder is rarely available due to a higher volume of clients. I really hope Paychex can jump forward into this century with their systems or else I'll likely begin to explore other vendors. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** If I didn't have 8+ years experience on the Paychex system I'd probably recommend another platform.
