What do you like best about Particle?

Particle io Internet of Things devices provides complete End to End integration and deployment in the cloud. And like the way, they perform analytics with Artificial intelligence and Machine learning. And multiple sensors embedded into a single board.

We can add our own required external sensors too with a female connector. Particle devices come with better rechargeable batteries and for recharge, we can use our smartphone adapter with a cable. I mean to say that we can charge devices with multiple cables. We can customize the functionality of sensors and devices with the build. particle io web Integrated development environment. And flash our customizable code into it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Particle devices are great for online or distance learning and over-the-air programming!"

5/5

What do you like best about Particle?

I can teach the basic concepts of microcontrollers with actual demonstration and actual over-the-air programming in an online or distance learning set-up. The programs or sketches are very similar to Arduino. You can upload sketches anywhere, anytime using the WebIDE. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Particle?

Sometimes the device disconnects or needs some resetting/re-flashing. It is also difficult to upload sketched locally or when you do not have an internet connection. I know that the devices are mainly created for IoT, but I do hope there is an easy way to upload sketched using a computer that is not internet connected. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Particle:

Particel devices are great for online learning! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

I am using the devices for online teaching or distance learning. The students can upload or modify programs remotely at the hardware level. This setup demonstrates a clear concepts about Internet-of-Things, teleoperation, and also the OSI layers. Although there are many online simulators on different MCU, these simulators are on the application layer. Particle devices used in online teaching/learning give the students actual experience of over-the-air programming. They can do firmware level updates. During this covid19 pandemic and lockdowns, teleoperated laboratory setups using particle devices are very helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great product for some applications"

4/5

What do you like best about Particle?

Particle cloud platform is clean, well designed. The API's are powerful and provide a good feature set to build some powerful applications. The devices are also extremely stable. Of the 400+ devices we used only couple were bricked. The 3rd Gen hardware is quite capable even though the devices are tiny.

Well designed device level security and platform flexibility, make it a good platform choice for a lot of IOT applications in real world.

The particle community has been pretty awesome. Easy to find help when faced with quirky issues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Particle?

Abrupt discontinuation of Mesh support & Xenon devices hurt us badly. The application we built was heavily reliant on mesh. Cost us a lot of development hours to redesign and we still haven't been able to get the devices working reliably, as we are dependent on Wi-Fi or Cellular signal at each device (unlike a mesh network).

Lack of 900Mhz support makes is difficult as the devices only support 2.4Ghz, which tends to be a crowded spectrum in industrial environments.

Also, support only for AT&T networks limits the Boron devices capability. Our experience has been that there is better Verizon coverage in rural areas. The official support for Verizon has been delayed multiple times and is still 6 months away as of now.

I really hope they bring back mesh support. That will make the device extremely powerful and usable over a lot of industrial IOT applications. Once Particle is able to design greater reliability in "Internet" part of the IOT, I would be willing to endorse this IOT platform very strongly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Particle:

There are some use cases for which particle is an excellent choice. In some cases, it is just not possible to obtain the reliability in the data/sensing due to lack of some critical features for an Enterprise/Industrial setting. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using Particle devices to collect data and improve Wrapper machine performance. Our previous hardware was using non-standard/custom protocols and old hardware which was reaching EOL. Using particle has made it cheaper, offer lot more functionality and ability to build a strong foundation, that we can expand on in future. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Particle - great IoT hardware and software platform"

4.5/5

What do you like best about Particle?

- Particle gives you the tools to create a profesional IoT product: : a platform to to manage the entire IoT network having visibility of the devices, health and connectivity status and others.

- The hardware that connects straight to the cloud is an advantage. It provides a software abstraction that saves development efforts to handle all cloud connection issues. This gives you time to market.

- The availability of 3G and Wifi hardware options.

- The community is very active in terms of sharing experience and providing support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Particle?

- The documentation in some topics lags a lot behind the speed of development so using some existing or new features is many times try and error which can be frustating.

- Many questions could be easily answered with better documentation and the community is flogged with question on "how to use xxx.. the documentation is not clear or does not say anything..."

-As we are in the manufacturing sector, we'd like to see more development into the wired Ethernet capabilities.

-There has been many firmware release lately so sometimes is difficult to keep up with your product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

We created an IoT cloud based service to monitor and measure productivity from industrial machines. The benefits are productivity improvements and cost savings for our customers with the real-time insights we provide them. We measure production minute per minute so our customers can make 10% or more improvements (saving time, producing faster or even saving money in capturing data) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Excellent Documentation & Developer Community - Particle Argon"

5/5

What do you like best about Particle?

The support, developer community, technical documentation, and the scalability of the Particle platform. I have run into several issues with the compiling my code and the users on the particle forum have helped troubleshoot my issues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Particle?

The only issue with Particle platform is that there seems to be a slightly larger learning curve for beginners in the Arduino world. I am mostly familiar with the Arduino IDE, so I had to do a little digging to see what I could and couldn't do with the Particle platform. Another thing is that some of the standard Arduino libraries may be fully supported on the particle platform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Particle:

Make sure that all of the libraries you need to use are actively supported with the Particle platform. I would also recommend using the Particle Workbench extension in Visual Studio Code for easier and quicker deployment of firmware to the board. The online IDE is excellent for Over-the-Air firmware updates, but it makes the initial prototyping take longer. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

For my engineering capstone project, my team and I are using a Particle Argon as the main processing unit for a custom ultrasonic flow meter. We like the the scalability and production-ready characteristics of the Particle platform. Our meter will be used throughout different countries and the data plan Particle drastically simplifies our logistics. As we finalize our meter design, our client plans to mass produce our meter (given that it bodes well in the field). This is really the core advantage of the Particle platform in that once we have a prototype, we can adjust our design to use a more production-ready chip. Another excellent feature is the connectivity of the Particle boards, one of the requirements of our meter is the ability to use it in foreign countries and access the flow data. "Simplicity of Arduino with effortless web connectivity out of the box"

5/5

What do you like best about Particle?

I don't want to pick just one best thing, there are several reasons that make the experience positive and are the reason why I recommend Particle to anyone who is building IoT projects.

1. Simple internet connectivity: Built-in and effortless internet connectivity that makes accessing the device simple yet secure, without having to develop special dashboards.

2. Documentation: Every API function is meticulously documented, explains the functionality in a simple manner and it's always kept up to date.

3. DeviceOS updates: The DeviceOS updates make the Photon faster with every version, and the nice thing is that I do not have to buy a new device to get the upgrade. I can do it on all the devices, regardless of the age, even my 5+ years old Photon. The VS Code plugin makes it very simple to pick the new deviceOS version and flash it to the device.

4. Cloud compile: With the cloud compile, I do not have to download and set up the toolchain, just click a button and the device is automagically updated in less than a minute. Tying that to point 3., this also works with DeviceOS updates, again allowing me to install a new version without having to wait for downloads and set up a new toolchain. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Particle?

Can't think of anything, for my use cases the experience was flawless. The only problem I had was in the transition to deviceOS@2-RC (Release Candidate). But that is kind of expected since it was not a stable release. The problems were resolved with the version of deviceOS@2.0.0. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Particle:

I strongly recommend particle for personal projects, especially when there is a requirement to be able to wirelessly access the device status or to update some of the parameters.

I have multiple devices and I will buy more for future projects. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

1. Controlling an RGB LED strip for room ambient lighting.

2. Remote keyboard controller which can be controlled via the Particle dashboard from any authenticated device.

I am planning a system to detect the water level in a large rainwater tank to prevent overflows or running out of water. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Rapid Connected Device Development"

4.5/5

What do you like best about Particle?

Particle allows my company to quickly build IOT solutions that are designed to exactly fit the needs of my customers. This enables them to do things that makes their jobs simpler and faster. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Particle?

Using particle over a platform like Arduino has large advantages in terms of ease of connectivity, but there isn't quite as much documentation all over the web, nor as many libraries built on the platform, so it at times excludes more novice programmers from being able to actualize a project. This in general adds some time to projects.

I personally would like to see some supported branching into machine learning inference on device. This is a huge opportunity. I have personally used random forests on device with much success and am in the process of getting Googles Tensorflow lite micro running on device. Having a library for this would make the process much simpler, and allow novices to leverage this powerful technology. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

-Customized asset tracking solutions for businesses.

- Monitoring for inland lakes

- Remote alerting in industrial environments.

The ease of connectivity really allows for simple solutions to complex problems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
