"Pantheon is pretty much awesome"

What do you like best?

Pantheon makes it really easy to spin up, administer, update, and deploy changes to multiple Drupal websites. The dev-test-live workflow they've created is kind of like magic, since code changes and databases can be transferred from one environment to another in no time. The one-click backup restoration feature has saved me at least once from accidental data loss (which was my fault), and restoring from backup was so simple, I gained even greater confidence in the system. And Pantheon loves agencies so much they let us use the platform essentially for free while we build our client's websites.

What do you dislike?

Ticket response times are slower than I'd like. I also frequently receive "Platform Operations status" emails noting problems with the system, and while these emails are welcome — transparency is a good thing — they have the side effect of making it seem like Pantheon is breaking down all the time, which is not actually the case.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Ain't nobody got time to build deployment workflows — the time you spend doing that prevents you from doing billable work. Do yourself a favor and use Pantheon instead.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Pantheon has saved us countless hundreds (thousands?) of hours that we would have had to spend configuring servers, creating hosting accounts, and building a dev-test-live workflow on our own. We're able to create custom Drupal upstreams that simplify site creation and module updates — the basic work has to be done only once and can then be merged with existing sites or be cloned to create new sites.

"The Best Option for Drupal hosting, hands down"

What do you like best?

Pantheon's automation is the best. Pantheon's dashboards and the isolation between dev, test, and production environments let us stage changes for public, client review. Then, once the client approves the changes, it's only one click to deploy. It's also one-click for most Drupal core upgrades.

Pantheon is also high performance -- they somehow handle varnish caching automatically without getting in my way.

What do you dislike?

It's not immediately apparent how to handle site scalability. If we have larger sites, it's not clear if we can add more resources, more servers, etc. Sometimes we have server issues arise that require intervention from Pantheon support, and their support staff can take a few hours to respond.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try them out for free; launch a heavy installation profile like Open Atrium, and see how it performs. Have your team try out the deployment workflow and see if it's a natural fit for your process.

If you build sites for clients, sign-up to be a reseller so you can host more sites for free than the basic free level.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Pantheon's process fits right into our existing installation-profile-based continuous integration process. We build large, business-logic-heavy Drupal sites, and the the Pantheon hosting system is the first system we've used that fully supports our version-control-driven deployment process. Internally, we use a continuous integration server that uses Drupal Installation Profiles, Drush, GIT, and Aegir to build an entire site from scratch and then deploy it. Pantheon's GIT-based deployments fit perfectly with this approach.

The automatic backups also allow us to slide back to previous releases of sites, if things go badly.

"Solid Hosting Experience for Busy Developers"

What do you like best?

Love the DevOps pipeline automation between WordPress clients. Saves me time, money and resources.

What do you dislike?

Cost can be more than needed if only a simple site solution is required (no custom development).

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have WordPress/Drupal sites that require a lot of custom development than this is the platform for you, the ease of use for pushing changes up the pipeline from Dev to Testing to Production is magical and allows for solid development practices even with a live production environment.

Can be a bit overkill if you only need a simple, straightforward WordPress install and theme.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Managing several WordPress websites between different levels of development while letting Business users continue content creation on a production version has been the largest immediate benefit of utilizing the platform! Also the ability to spin up free development instances and only get charged when going live is one of the most amazing features to date. It puts other hosting companies to shame.

"Pantheon is ideal for important sites, but it's not cheap"

What do you like best?

Pantheon is the best hosting choice if you want to have access to real Drupal and WordPress experts. They don't do cheap plans, but their uptime / reliability and support team are worth the extra $.

Their scaling function allows you to increase your plan's service level for a few months, then bring it back down again -- just by clicking buttons.

Lots of performance tools built in -- Redis, Varnish, CDN...

What do you dislike?

Compared to other host providers, it's a little more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Pantheon also uses nginx which is much much better than Apache but if you're not familiar with nginx, it'll take some time to ramp up. Trust me, it's well worth learning!

"Excellent Drupal Workflow"

What do you like best?

It's relatively simply to manage staging and live environments and everything is geared toward running an optimal Drupal install (in our particular case). During our most recent redesign, we were able to design everything in the same place and push live pretty easily.

We now use Pantheon for multiple client accounts and really appreciate the workflow they have establish in going from concept to production.

What do you dislike?

The setup isn't particularly intuitive, especially if you haven't been involved in the initial setup. We found some of their documentation around our specific questions to be somewhat minimal and would have appreciated a little more information about some basic questions we had.

Luckily though, their support is top notch and they're able to answer questions about how things work quickly and easily.

We're generally very satisfied with the service and would recommend them freely.

"Pantheon One | A One-Stop Shop for Agencies"

What do you like best?

By far, the interface, ease-of-use, and support provided by Pantheon is hands down one of the best in the industry. The tools implemented to help manage teams, set up a development process, and launch sites has never been easier. Every site gets a performance boost with the addition of the global CDN and built-in SSL certificates with Let's Encrypt.

What do you dislike?

If you need to host a Drupal site as a multisite, or need to install external software on the same system, unfortunately you're out of luck.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're looking for a solid Drupal host that's easy to understand and gives you all the tools you need to run a website efficiently without worrying about devops, Pantheon is definitely the way to go.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Repeatedly used and recommended pantheon for easy Drupal and Wordpress hosting."

What do you like best?

Ease of deployment.

Dev->Stage->Prod workflow is easy.

Ability to switch from git to sftp.

Agency set up to enable contractors limited access to projects.

What do you dislike?

No contact phone number for emergencies.

Occasionally inflexible due to large shared hosting environment.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Stop self-hosting. Let someone else manage this for you.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Removing hosting as something we need to worry about. Pantheon has helped us move most of our websites off of our internal servers.

"My Review"

What do you like best?

hosting speed and service uptime, workflow

What do you dislike?

cannot itemize the billing per client. I was told this was a limitation of the billing software they use although I am able to produce an itemized invoice very easily, so I guess it's a limitation of their staff or someone just doesn't care enough.

Recommendations to others considering the product

as long as you don't need itemized billing for each client's charges, you'll be ok

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

hosting speed has improved for clients's sites

"Pantheon for Drupal and Wordpress"

What do you like best?

I love the easy setup without heavy command line work. I hate configuring php modules and installing Drush/WP-CLI so this is a life-saver. It's easy to add freelancers and creating FTP logins is nice. Spinning up a new environment for each developer is easy and they can be merged back into the main development environment with a few clicks. I use command line interfaces, but I prefer to use a GUI where possible.

Also, they have a set up tutorials on Drupalize.me that I have used to help get the team up to date. It was a real time saver.

https://drupalize.me/videos/what-pantheon?p=2286

What do you dislike?

The system is good, but there are little idiosyncrasies with using a platform as at service (PaaS). I learned the hard way that there is a git timeout limit that can affect uploading large files. It's the little items that they don't post in their documentation.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use the trial first. You can build an entire site before paying. After that, sign up as an agency to reap the benefits. Also, they will set up a call and go over the entire process with you and the people on your team if you need it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Server set up and maintenance. This allows our customers to own their own hosting but we can still control our environment. Plus we don't have to keep up with invoicing.

"Great Wordpress hosting for a great price."

What do you like best?

Enterprise features for a great price (dev/test/live instances, automatic backups, code revision control).

What do you dislike?

It's not a dislike per se, but because Pantheon takes a more rigid approach to ensuring your environment is setup in the best possible way, it can take some time and knowhow to get your site setup the first time. You definitely need to read the docs in order to familiarize yourself with the import process and mandatory workflow.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I've heard pushback from my customers on the price difference from low-cost hosts such as GoDaddy or HostGator ($5-$10/mo) vs Pantheon ($25/mo). If your site is a hobby, then maybe a low-cost host is fine, but if you're serious about your website as a business tool, then the fees for Pantheon are nominal and I would consider them a no-brainer. As a long-time veteran in this space, I've grown tired of being burned by low-cost hosts and it's really not worth my time any longer to try and save a few bucks. For the low costs guys, you can just about bet that eventually you'll have an issue, and everything you saved for the year will be spent after the first time you hire an expert to fix your problem.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Sites are faster, safer, and more secure. Pantheon gives me the peace of mind that in case of an issue, I'll be able to recover my sites more quickly and easily.

"Excellent product, highly priced, no support"

What do you like best?

The multi-environment workflow is by far the best feature on the platform. It's easy to write new code and move it up to production, while effortlessly making backups at every step along the way.

What do you dislike?

The philosophy of their technical support is this: "if we didn't break it, don't contact us". I've never used such an expensive hosting product coupled with a support department that has such disdain helping their customers be successful on their platform. I understand hosts that don't want to delve into your theme and help you fix your code. But even if you're experiencing a disaster interacting with the workflow functionality, they don't want to hear anything about it. About half of our customers are on Pantheon (including our own site), and the other half are on GoDaddy Managed Wordpress. GoDaddy's support is par to none. They love helping, either on chat, phone or email. And as a result, we don't have to interact with them as much. So you are left with this decision: do you want an amazing hosting product with terrible support, or do you want an above average hosting product with amazing support?

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The websites we build are integral components of the B2B sales process. To that effect, Pantheon hosting does bode well with large IT departments. The security and performance of their platform is par to none. Most of our clients are reluctant to host their sites externally, but when they're introduced to Pantheon, they often reconsider.

"Excellent hosting platform and support team"

What do you like best?

The Pantheon platform makes a lot of great functionality available to even basic level service packages. Multidev environments are very easy to spin up. They constantly keep their status page updated too, so clients know if issues come up what is a platform issue and can coordinate with them.

What do you dislike?

There's very little to dislike here. The email blasts might be annoying at times.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Pantheon is a great option.

"Streamlined WordPress Deployment and Management"

What do you like best?

We really like the shared development environment ease of setup and contribution aspects. This along with 3 environments makes sharing our development updates with clients a breeze.

What do you dislike?

Updates to plugins are a bit more cumbersome but like all managed environments should be, this forces you to preview any plugin changes for adverse side effects prior to actually pushing them to production!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We've solved remote development issues outside of github or bitbucket. Not that we mind using those, but it's nice to manage all things in one place.

"Shakey at Best"

What do you like best?

I like the ability to spin up multiple environments with just a couple clicks.

What do you dislike?

They have a lot of outages. Even for business plan customers, there are outages that cause our sites to stop functioning (solr, specifically).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Go enterprise if you can. The support for their other plans is lacking.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have eliminated the need for employees to stay current on maintaining our servers. It frees up our developers time for use in more profitable areas.

"Pretty decent product"

What do you like best?

Easy deployment workflow, multidev system, easy backup/restore process.

What do you dislike?

"Best Drupal hosting service I've worked with."

What do you like best?

Very simple and easy to use user interface. I was able to train clients how to use the interface to manage their site. Also the terminal connection creates a great tool that makes site automation very simple.

What do you dislike?

The backup process sometimes deletes files that are desirable for backup such as css files. It has broken sites in the past.

"Having a single platform for CMS implementations is truly a net savings."

What do you like best?

Adherence to best practices for scalability and implementation.

Always having a sandbox for new features, via the multidev environments.

Support of a team who understands their platform.

Asides from one large global event, outages have been restricted to predictable maintenance or quick resolution with little impact.

What do you dislike?

A REST API for platform management would be a welcomed addition.

Recommendations to others considering the product

No platform exists that is as simple, well supported, and easier to onboard.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Single, documented, and predictable experience for developers makes on boarding resources a breeze. Instituting a QA process that completely involves the customer, through leveraging cloning and use of the test multidev environments clients can verify changes before deployment The impact is less bugs make it to end users.

"Some gripes but overall a great hosting option for our Drupal sites"

What do you like best?

Simple, easy to use interfaces, streamlined. Multi-dev environments are really useful. Pricing is decent when compared to other providers in the same space.

What do you dislike?

Biggest complaint is that the professional plan is required for an SSL, PLUS an SSL fee, per month. That one drives me nuts. I have a really hard time justifying it to customers. Hurts every time.

The dev workflow that once code hits the dev environment it has to go upstream. No changing of branches. I always feel like the dev and stage environments are rendered mostly useless by this workflow.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I love that it fits the basic hosting use case for Drupal sites. Makes life as a developer much easier. We just focus on developing and can forget about dealing with hosting.

"Great product for Wordpress and Drupal Sites"

What do you like best?

Pantheon's Migration Features, GIT and Workflow are some of the best features. Easily migrating and managing sites, along with backups and server performance tweaks specifically for Wordpress and Drupal Sites.

What do you dislike?

It's unfortunately they don't support Wordpress Network without requiring an enterprise level account. The process for taking code from dev to live quickly can be cumbersome in an emergency. Support sometimes takes over 24 hours to respond to ticket requests.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Doesn't support Wordpress Network, need to have a little more technical experience to understand GIT, Workflow and etc.

"Pantheon for EDU is the tool universities need to manage web development"

What do you like best?

1) The user interface -- straightforward and easy to use; 2) strategic enhancements that add great functionality without disrupting what's already in place; 3) solid, prompt help from the support team.

What do you dislike?

I wish there was a barebones hosting plan at the $15 mark.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Hard to say. If you're building Drupal sites, most likely you already know Pantheon. Pantheon also hosts Wordpress sites, but I don't have experience with that.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Pantheon for EDU solves three critical problems in academic web development: 1) it shifts the base of operations from the extremes of university-wide or single-site development, to a mid-sized structure more appropriate to schools, departments, and centers, while at the same time allowing for collaborative support between all Pantheon clients within a university; 2) it facilitates ongoing, longterm support from an outside development shop, so that great functionality and longterm site maintainability doesn't depend on in-house developers; the platform can be managed at the level of straightforward configuration (ie, without developer skills) so that communication managers and office staff (ie, the people who actually manage web communications and content within a university) can easily create new sites and maintain a complex fleet of sites.

What do you dislike?

There are occasions where it's difficult to troubleshoot what's going on because of odd errors not captured in error logs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Peace of mind while running a cloud based hosting."

What do you like best?

Pantheon's turnkey 3 environments workflow and the fact that we don't have to worry about server maintenance is what sold me on Pantheon. The superb customer support is bonus.

What do you dislike?

Not being able to ssh directly to the server as root was hard to get used to and the not having a static IP for outgoing mail for the pro tier is not ideal.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend using the sandbox account to develop a site or two before making the switch. I am confident that once it is tried making a switch would be a no-brainer.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Pantheon is a key part of my workflow"

What do you like best?

Pantheon allows me to launch and maintain Drupal websites and have the confidence that code changes to the site will be done in a proper and systematic way. I also love the backups system, and the ability to develop on the server development through sftp. I'm a WYSIWYG kind of guy -- I understand coding but as a generalist (strategy, content, design, development), I don't want to learn and remember a lot of code based processes if I don't need to. I also really like the ease with which team members can be added.

What do you dislike?

I don't dislike much about Pantheon. Some minor issues -- would be nice to have a comment field to associate with manual backups. Would be nice if the control panel icons would update. Some of mine show the installing icon even though the site has been live for months.

The ability to manage multiple sites in one convenient dashboard is priceless. We were able to move from a dedicated server to pantheon and save thousands of dollars a year with no performance impact. One click Drupal distributions as well as Wordpress makes Pantheon a huge time saver. Allowing our team to work together and see actions performed on the sites is powerful.

What do you dislike?

I would like to see phpmyadmin in the dashboard area. The lack of a simple PHPMYADMIN is the one thing I dislike.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Saving thousands of dollars per year over a dedicated server. We can scale in a moment without paying for what we need until we need it. Our team is able to be on the same page with updates and development cycles without extra software .

"Excellent optimized hosting for WordPress"

What do you like best?

The development workflows are paramount to managing several websites while keeping DevOps/Sysadmin task costs low. In addition, CLI tools such as terminus (wp-cli and drush) make maintaining these sites fairly normalized and simple.

What do you dislike?

Support is by far the biggest issue with Pantheon. A reliable host should have helpful support. In my experience, you need developers familiar with the Pantheon setup, including platform limitations, etc. In the beginning, we often were given many documentation links per support tickets where some of these were old or out of date information. Eventually we 'learned' the platform, but relevant links + insight into the problems would be better addressed with a respected support team.

Recommendations to others considering the product

With regard to agencies, strongly consider the overhead of learning a new platform and its limitations, invest time and money into your own support network (join the power users group), and include workflows supportive of the Pantheon workflow (dashboard operations, code review, etc).

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We no longer need to worry about deployments, setting up or configuring feature/staging environments, nor syncing between environments. Reducing the overhead for DevOps, its responsibility to maintain platform/software and upkeep security patches has helped us realize the expertise of a platform provider such as Pantheon.

"Extremely well-designed"

What do you like best?

Pantheon staff are communicative and responsive. Their GUI for their service is intuitive and helpful. Their service is really optimized for the things I need to do to support sites as a developer.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes response time is slow if I have a problem in the morning Eastern Time. If I need to move a site off Pantheon (Drupal), there are some config differences that make it a bit time-consuming since their environment requires some customizations. I also wish they had non-profit pricing.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to provide streamlined support more easily on Pantheon, and to offer things like SSL, Solr search, and speed optimizations more easily.

"Developer for FlickerBox"

What do you like best?

I like the use of the staging environments and the drag and drop interface is convenient when i want to back up staging and beta branches with the latest production files and database.

What do you dislike?

The workflow is certainly different and took some time to get used to but overall I'm satisfied with the time investment.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Has a great command line interface and the ability to easily deploy from staging and beta environments to production, and transfer files and database settings from production to other environments is a huge selling point for me.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This is more of an all-in-one solution for us to manage multiple sites and not have to rely on deploy hooks through multiple services (deployhq, bitbucket, github, etc).

"Brings focus back to our work"

What do you like best?

The best thing about Pantheon is the way it has allowed my firm to focus on delivering new functionality and features to our client's sites without being sidetracked by infrastructure requirements. We're solid in our dev-ops skills, but Pantheon allows us to be much more cost efficient with our client's budgets. With Pantheon, we spend more time creating solutions to assist our client's with the day-to-day usage of their CMS. We support clients on both WordPress and Drupal.

What do you dislike?

Believe it or not, I sometimes miss getting in there and tweaking the backend with Ansible.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're on the fence about switching to a website management platform, ask yourself, "how much value are you providing to your clients with a homegrown system?"

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The biggest business problem we solved with Pantheon was providing a development/production infrastructure and workflow for our customers, at a much lower cost, and without giving up any of the flexibility or speed that a dedicated system might provide.

The biggest benefit we've realized with our clients is an increased focus on the work that clients can actually see. We've always understood the importance of a stable and flexible development/production environment, but it hasn't always been easy to convey those benefits to the client.

"Pantheon rocked our world"

What do you like best?

The dash board has seriously cut our dev time. I'm preaching the Pantheon word to all our peers!

What do you dislike?

Not much that we don't like. I suppose the fact that you can't use FTP to upload files (not allowed in GIT) without switching to FTP mode.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to update your workflow, and modernize it so that you're more agile for growth, this is the product for you.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Backwards devops. We're moving all of our work to this workflow now.

"Pantheon is the best hosting money can buy, but not trivial for the novice user."

What do you like best?

Performance, security, and bigger bang for the development dollar because I don't have to mess around with lots of hosting particulars and moving parts.

Three environments (dev, test, and live) make development operations a breeze.

What do you dislike?

Not that this is easy, but I wish there were a better way to ensure that database-level content could be versioned. I'm aware of recommended workarounds but something that more naturally fits the workflow would be awesome.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be sure you read as much of the documentation as you can. You don't actually need to do this because the user interface is very intuitive. However, by reading the documentation you'll be able to understand the "hidden" advantages that make Pantheon even better.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm solving problems for small businesses. In one case, I had just told a client that their site was liable to be compromised with their cut-rate, non-Pantheon host. The client said there was no reason to think so because they had been safe with that host for years. Within a month, the client's site went down because it was broken into by a hacker. We moved them to Pantheon immediately and the site has not had any problems since then.

"Pantheon Review - Not sure why I am titling my own review. You asked me"

What do you like best?

Pantheon allows our team to work more efficiently. The workflow tools are great so from kicking the project off to going live, things work smoothly.

What do you dislike?

Clients that don't get the importance of good hosting. Yes, you can host on crappy cheap stuff, but it comes at a cost that you might not see right away. But some day, you will pay.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Pantheon and Lando save us a ton of time and time is money. Don't be stupid. Host with Pantheon.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Saves time so we make more money.

"Wish I would have started using Pantheon Sooner"

What do you like best?

Pantheon fits great into my workflow and allows me to collaborate with other developers on projects with ease.

What do you dislike?

Some of the documentation is difficult to comprehend the first time around.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Developing and deploying Drupal and WordPress projects. Not having to worry about scaling and server configuration allows me to focus on my customers' sites.

"Agency Partner"

What do you like best?

that your server is kept up to date and low maintenance.

What do you dislike?

only communication is via email. although it is fairly timely in response time, sometimes the phone is an easier form of communication.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We don't need a server admin with Pantheon.

"No-brainer for Drupal hosting"

What do you like best?

Pantheon makes it so easy for developers to focus on their main task – development – and leave operations to someone else.

What do you dislike?

Debugging can sometimes be a bit tricky, with little insight to what goes on between Nginx and the Drupal application.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Unless you have some very specific demands (you don't) Pantheon will Just Make It Work. Try their free account out and have a look yourself!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Getting up and running with a Drupal production environment (plus dev and stage).

"Happy to see you!"

What do you like best?

Having Dev-Test-Prod environments at the same time and multidev is pretty sweet too.

I like the Pantheon logo too. 👍

What do you dislike?

- User interface (dashboard) could use some work.

- I have two accounts: one for work, one for personal. I would like to be able to consolidate both accounts or be able to switch quickly from one to another.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Just give it a try. It works really well.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to host 3 environments at the same time and not have any issues from pushing dev to prod.

Also, it's pretty sweet that client or non-dev person can push files/db from one environment to another. It's saves devs time. :)

"Used it for several months to do drupal development/deployment"

What do you like best?

Drupal-specific product focus was really nice, and the dev/staging/deployment environments was an innovative idea for a hosting company to have out of the box.

What do you dislike?

In the end it was just another tool to learn, seemed like a waste of time when as a developer you need to know how the stack works anyway – might as well just get a vps and install it yourself.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're a full stack developer, it might not be the best fit, or it might add additional layers of complexity

"Great managed hosting if you run the app's they support"

What do you like best?

It scales well and their workflow promotes best practices

What do you dislike?

Can't run just any code in their environment, they dont offer a CDN or any storage outside of their one size fits all pricing plans.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Also look at CDN's for storage, it fills up quick! Also don't be too quick to jump up their pricing tiers.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Managed hosting thats secure, easily updated and scales
