## osCommerce Reviews
  ### 1. OsCommerce - Watch this space!

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dave H. | IT Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 27, 2022

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

OsCommerce was a true Opensource eCommerce package, which back in the early 2000s became a great choice for e-commerce web development. We liked the fact that it was built using PHP and was extendible to our needs, I believe it was one of the first OS cart systems to employ PHP. It's great that OsCommerce is being revived by a new development team and we are waiting for version 4 in anticipation!

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

There were lots of small dislikes (mainly aesthetic) but none of which couldn't be overcome with a bit of modification. Around 2010 the project became a bit stale, updates slowed down and forks of OsCommerce started overtaking in popularity and functionality.

**Recommendations to others considering osCommerce:**

Currently, the new version (well more of a re-development) of OsCommerce is under BETA. You can apply for early access however it's going to take some time for the new version to be released. Even after it's a release I would suggest holding off migrating any live stores until it has been fully test-driven by the community.

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OsCommerce provided a solid framework for an e-commerce platform, allowing us to increase our sales and web presence. Its templating at the time was game-changing and allowed our company to present itself in a much better light.

  ### 2. An Ecommerce That Has Been Around Since the Early 2,000's

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Juan B. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 03, 2018

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

Free to download
Numerous integrations
Strong user community
Self-Hosted solution no need for monthly fees

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

Limited features
Difficult to use
Developer skills required
Outdated design templates

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

osCommerce was pretty standard and reasonable to use back in 2006-2010 until mobile start kicking in, the design is now outdated and considered UGLY. Still looks the same. Although it offers perks like 7,000 free integrations and an active online forum, osCommerce has been compromised by hackers several times over the years. Even though those holes have been patched, if you’re wise you will invest in not just hosting and a whip-smart developer, but also extra security before using osCommerce.

  ### 3. Stay organized

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Transportation/Trucking/Railroad | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 12, 2018

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

It can be used on any web server that has PHP and MySQL installed. osCommerce is open source. This means that you can modify it freely, without worrying that you’re violating some license agreement. Due to that, there’s also a lively community around osCommerce that’s always willing to help out with any issues you might have with the platform.

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

But there is a problem when it comes to reliability and scalability, and when your product database gets to a certain size, you will start to notice the website creaking a little, making it more likely to experience outages and technical difficulties.

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Product catalog management. You can have an unlimited number of products, product categories, manufacturers, product attributes.

  ### 4. Oscommerce

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kyle S. | Senior Associate II, Cardmember Communications, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2018

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

This is a great shopping portal platform to list pricing and promo deal info to properly prioritize your messages

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

Wish it would have more product flow features

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Was trying to create sell list for october sales sweep products

  ### 5. Oscommerce is great for PHP users with a good community

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Wholesale | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 13, 2018

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

I like that many oscommerce users share information on their forums and help each other. Its one of the oldest ecommerce communties onlline.

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

If you have a lack of php knowledge, the coding can be a little hard compared to other companies that have modules or widgets.

**Recommendations to others considering osCommerce:**

We switched to prestashop for ease of use and integration

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its a great low cost ecommerce solution with USPS/UPS and payout integration

  ### 6. Not bad for something Free

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James B. | Managing Partner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 16, 2018

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

It is quite quick to setup if you have experience using the system and there are a lot of features out of the box are useful

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

You need to understand coding to make any small styling of the pages. Version 3 was meant to come up years ago but version 2.3.4.1 is the latest production. The out of the box design is dated. If you want shipping or something a little more like woocommerce you have to allow a lot of time to develop it. The folder structure server side is over complex and you need to fully understand the template structure. I had to buy a book to find what does what.

**Recommendations to others considering osCommerce:**

There are a lot better free off the shelf e-commerce platforms. Its good product if your looking to develop a quick and easy shop with no advanced functionality. I would say that this would be for a beginner or a very small website which your not expecting to do much admin or have a small amount of products. One thing you need to be very careful. When you upgrade to new versions you can't skip versions you have to go one upgrade at a time.

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I created a pretty cool trophy selling website with the ability to have engraving and related products but took months to develop. Rather than doing this in Woocommerce which would have been a lot quicker.

  ### 7. Eight years of building E-commerce solutions with osCommerce

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Juan A. | Desarrollador de software, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 11, 2016

**What do you like best about osCommerce?**

osCommerce is easy to deploy and easy to use to the final user

**What do you dislike about osCommerce?**

The code base is a mess. It needs a deep refactor.

**Recommendations to others considering osCommerce:**

Use it if you are looking for a very light solution.

**What problems is osCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For what is in sake, it just works for simple shops. If you don't have big needs it may suit you.
