## Optimizely Content Management System Reviews
  ### 1. Good vision, hard, old & expensive to run

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jacqueline N. | Digital Consultant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 03, 2022

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The sales pitch was good!
The product is old but is reasonably intuitive to use for basic editing

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The cost to maintain and upgrade through their PaaS (DXP) cloud offering was prohibitive. And the opposite of what we were told.
It is a custom CMS, so you really need specialist trained Episerver developers (not standard devs) and this is hard to find and even harder to get excited with an old product and architecture.
It's really quite basic and nothing is OOTB in reality (unlike the demo's we saw)!
We were going to try and rebuild a site using a headless approach and realised that 90% of Optimizely system is not useable n headless mode (ie testing, analytics, versioning, you name it); and the devs realised that it's inferior to most SaaS Headless CMSs (such as Contentstack and Kontent).
We never got going with Personalisation with Visitor Groups as they (in reality) are restrictive and very manual.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Work out if you want to use SaaS, Headless, Modern or MACH - if so don't choose Optimizely
Unlike Headless SaaS CMSs Optimizely does a big SELL - so do your own homework on TCO etc.
Realise that this is OLD tech - so reliable but below average.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing 3 websites with similar content and themes and hooking up to a CRM for form submissions.
We have leads through the site, but in reality, the overwhelming maintenance cost and slow releases meant we moved to a SaaS Headless CMS (Contentstack, which is not perfect but much better meets our needs)

**Official Response from Emma Davis:**

> Hi Jacqueline,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We're sorry to hear you found the tech didn't fit your needs.

Were you by chance using an older version of our CMS? We ask because CMS 12—the latest version of our product—comes with more headless capabilities, including API coverage for Content Delivery, Content Management and Content Definition. These APIs (documented here: https://docs.developers.optimizely.com/content-cloud) are used to support modern front-end frameworks. Additionally, our upcoming Content Graph feature allows you to query content using GraphQL, so API calls are fast, flexible, and developer-friendly.

In addition to supporting headless, we also provide the “head” or delivery part of the solution. We find that our customers who get the most value out of our platform are adopting multiple components from the broader Optimizely DXP, ranked a market leader by analysts. When combined with our other offerings like Commerce, Optimizely Data Platform (ODP), Experimentation, and Content Marketing (Welcome), our CMS is part of a complete solution that helps businesses provide exceptional digital experiences that drive revenue and inspire customer loyalty.

With regard to your comment that the tech is old, we do release regular product updates to ensure our customers can benefit from the most modern capabilities on the market. You can see our weekly release notes here: https://world.optimizely.com/releases/. We are also dedicated to maintaining compatibility with Microsoft's latest version of the modern .NET track. In 2021, we completely rewrote the platform in .NET5, and are currently in the process of updating to support .NET 6.

We also have a strong network of highly skilled and certified solution partners who can develop and implement your Optimizely platform. You can find more information here: https://www.optimizely.com/partners/solution/united-states

We would be more than happy to discuss this further with you. You can reach us at reviews@optimizely.com. Thanks!

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Overall licensing part including the DXP services is a bit on the higher side.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing the content or visitors on the page has become easier without having a piece of technical knowledge.
Schedule published versions and multi-lingual support are also some of the good features.

  ### 4. Building & Scaling with Ease

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 17, 2021

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Optimizely's Cloud Content tools enable you to build & scale easily. Their "create once, publish everywhere" motto enables their users (you) to efficiently reach a wider audiences & generate demand for your product/services. Even better, multiple teams can collaborate and use the same tool (think Marketing, developers, etc)... it's pretty amazing!

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Like most new tools, it takes a while to learn how to use it well, or integrate with other products... but that's not uniwue to Optimizely, it's true for almost every product.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Figure out in advance which integrations you can leverage to create a comprehensive solution for your company.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before Optimizely, we were limited in how quickly we could move to scale our business — because of limited developer resources & backend specialists. Now, we can do everything we need to quickly using only part of our Engineering team, and those remaining resources can be leveraged for other company projects, increasing our productivity as a company for the same operating costs.

**Official Response from Emma Davis:**

> Hi,
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us a review! We highly value your feedback and are happy to hear that you're enjoying Content Cloud. If any matters ever arise during your experience please don't hesitate to reach out to your customer success manager or message us at reviews@optimizely.com.

  ### 5. Absolute game changer

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 17, 2021

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I've been looking for a solution like Optimizely Content Cloud for a long time -- and finally, it's here. As a developer interfacing with multiple design teams, having a central place to share assets is critical. With Content Cloud, I could easily grab any asset I need without getting manager approval, waiting for designers to return my emails, or wasting time searching my company's network drive.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I wish it were easier to manage multiple versions of the same asset. For example, I often want to use a different size image on desktop and mobile. You can definitely accomplish this with Optimizely Content Cloud by uploading multiple assets with distinct names. Ultimately, this isn't a dealbreaker, but it would be nice.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Optimizely Content Cloud will help me efficiently collaborate with multiple design teams and save time.

**Official Response from Emma Davis:**

> Hi!
Thanks so much for leaving us a review. It would be great if you could share any user insights with your customer success manager, as user feedback is essential in improving our products. Or, you can always message us at reviews@optimizely.com and we will connect you with the right people.

  ### 13. Great Cms that is easy to learn and work with

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 19, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

It is very easy to work with Episerver. If you are not familiar with this Cms, you can start demo and get familiar. There are a lot of other cms where you need to setup different account and setup just to see how the code is organized. For front-end developers, it is easy to jump in to the project.
They are always improving and supporting the newest technologies.
Episerver has a big support documentation for all parts: admins, developers and editors.
There is a world episerver blog where you can find everything.
Episerver Cms has a nice and easy understandable UI.
It has a good support of integration with other systems.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The price of the license is expensive...

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Episerver has very good support of personalized content, so the user can be able to see what is important and relevant to him.
Episerver uses the blocks that can be placed anywhere in the site. They can be restricted for different types of pages so there is no need to create content multiple times.
It has very good media handling. You can resize and transform the images on the way you need.
And the last but not the least, there is very good support for on page editing that many other cms dont support. You dont need to preview the page to see how it looks like, but in edit mode by just editing the content you are able to see how the page looks like.

  ### 14. One of the best CMS available in market for all - content creators, developers and end users

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 08, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

For Content creator - very nice and simple UI which content creator can easily understand and explore. Lots of features have been provided for them so they have full control over content.
Developer - Robust API documentation, trainings, ticket support, seminars, forums, community discussion, continuous release rollouts

So in summary, from small websites to websites of big businesses, organizations, in terms of CMS episerver is best option.

9 is given as for each and every technology in todays dynamic world, there is always scope to improve although it is best in industry.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Frankly speaking, license cost is one of the thing which episrever need to consider. when talking with business people, when they don't use tons of features provided by episerver and just use cms, then they find this cost bit heavy...if some innovative ideas they can use here it will really increase its base exponentially.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

EPIServer cms was used in my carrier for various business requirements. As developer, I am happy to see that, episerver updating itself continuously with latest technologies. feature such as user management it was really useful for chain of stores. publishing page control is also appreciated by business.a/b testing was also one of plugin for which business was interested in. content area and blocks is one of feature for which business firstly finds it somehow complex but once understood, they like that feature much.

**Reviewed Date:** April 24, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

For a developer the components and services are very nicely structured and easy to extend, build your own solution on top of.

The CMS editor is well designed and it's in sync with the component development.

There are a lot of administrative tasks that you can do with the system already up and running without having to do another deployment or code change.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The licensing cost means you need to have a certain budget for the project so it makes sense to utilize EPiServer.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

It's an elaborate platform with lots to offer for development and extensibility. It's got inherent support for nuget based add-on development which makes it easier to work on separate aspects of your solution with potentially separate development teams.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nishant K. | Development Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

API functionality added on to the cms for fetching the cms data adding the benefit of exploring the javascript framework features.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The cms UI could be more open as the advanced section contains most of the details related to configuration

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Go ahead you will have a lot of fun exploring the features

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's quite handy along with E-commerce. Enables to handle the product management more efficiently.

  ### 18. Episerver CMS is a top notch CMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Arts and Crafts | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 19, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The ability to customize the front end of the CMS utilizing any front end frameworks. My particular implementation was fully .NET MVC, but the headless capabilities exist and are only getting better.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Many of the advanced features are not as documented as I would expect. You can tell still that some components and modules were purchased and aren't integrated as tightly as I would like.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Capitalizing on the skill sets that can be found in our area. The customization allows many sites to share one code base, but have different skins. We never implemented many of the advanced features we purchased so all of the gains we could've had aren't there. That one was on us though.

  ### 19. As a software developer i find EPI server easy to use and super intuitive

what I don't like is that there is not a lot of resources to learn more about the solution

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

more training

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we mostly use Episerver as CMS for a client as a backend headless services

  ### 20. Not the easiest CMS

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 21, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The websites when done right are beautiful and optimised.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

It's just very slow and complicated to use. It's very easy to make a mistake when updating the content or if you want to schedule it. It's difficult to find old content from the tree structure. You always need a partner to use it unlike in Wordpress, Hubspot, Spotify, etc.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Carefully plan the blocks that you need. Specially photo blocks cause some problems visually. Select a company as a partner who understands your business needs and follow the visual guideline they provide.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

If you have the budget, then Episerver is a good option. It has many different blocks and features for all your communication needs.

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Transportation/Trucking/Railroad | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Great gui for editors and has a lot of features.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

To expensive for bare minimum, we only want headless and scale indefinitely in our own cloud servers not be stuck in epis own cloud. Test environments should not cost anything, if we scale with developers and more test environments should not increase our license cost.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Only editorial content and trying to minimize the need of the cms as much as possible as we are going headless.

  ### 25. My experience using Episerver CMS

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in International Trade and Development | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I like the ability to edit a page and preview the content easily

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I disliked some of the restrictions manditory fields created. The content tree could sometimes be confusing.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were able to create a much more visually impressive site. Templates made creation of content very straight forward.

  ### 26. A CMS which delivers on it's promises

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 26, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Episerver is really logical, and there's a lot of nice features which are easy to understand.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Developing and implementing new features in episerver is a big hassle. The lack of customer support is also a huge con.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Simplyfying web communication and management.

  ### 27. Previous developer - advanced

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 08, 2020

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Integrated page and object model meant data innovations could be developed within the cms

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Development lifecycle encumbered by publishing model

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

No longer using. But was happy with product. Org moved to open source

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None anymore. But previously developed solutions for a number of environmental- and transport- related websites

  ### 28. EpiServer is the best .NET CMS system for enterprise level systems

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric M. | Technical Lead, Digital Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 25, 2019

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Epi CMS has a really intuitive and easy set of libraries to work off of, and is very flexible for creating pages and templates. It is quite easy to work with, and the support services team is very helpful for fixing issues. They also have one of the best update cadences that I've ever seen. They roll out a security patch and enhancement patch for each system every single week. It is easy to update the system, as a developer.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I dislike the implementation partners. We've been through two who didn't necessarily know what they were doing. The DXC Service has a few failure points; At the Cloudflare level, as well as at the Azure level. EpiServer does not have any control over both platforms if there is a failure. Not a problem for us, but we have heard other customers say how difficult it is to implement without developers.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

For enterprises that have .NET developers, this is hands down the best option. I would very recommend going with the DXC Service in the cloud.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to successfully make it so the Marketing/Advertising department can handle the day-to-day content updates, while the Engineering team creates the pages and look/feel using code. This means that the Engineering team can focus on implementing new technology, rather than just putting copy on the page.

  ### 29. With proper implementation, this CMS is friendly to Designers, Developers, and Editors.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jaye H. | Director of Web Strategy, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 04, 2019

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

On the design and development side, this stable enterprise-level platform can support just about anything you can dream up. Though there are many features out of the box, where this product shines for us is how easy it has been to develop new features for our visitors. We have successfully integrated third-party SAAS such as our social media aggregator as well as various in-house applications. Episerver plays nice with others.

On the editor side, the interface is intuitive and well organized. We have a wide range of technical abilities within our editor pool and still receive positive feedback from them about their experience. Some have even uttered the words "fun to use" -- *gasp!*

Episerver as a company has been fantastic. They are responsive to our needs and have been proactive about new features and support. The CMS is one in a suite of offerings. Since they have taken the time to understand us as a customer, they know which mix of products best fit our needs and have not tried to sell us something we don't need.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I don't have many complaints about the product or company and the ones I have are minor. If I had to pick something, I would say the out-of-the-box reports. The default reports are content-centric, meaning I can see page status, updates, etc., which is fine for most customers. I would like to see editor-centric reports where I can view a specific editor's activity and history on the site. I know this type of report is something that we can develop in-house. Our need for this surfaced in the past year of usage. Again, this is minor in the grand scheme of the site. Please note that Episerver has a much more robust reporting solution within their offerings that we currently do not own (but are currently seeking).

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Like most web projects, proper planning and implementation are vital to success. Having the right partners is also a key factor. There are many implementation partners with Episerver experience. I would highly recommend finding one with skill in your industry. Also, consider what your long-term maintenance and update plan looks like after launch. For us, it made sense to use two partners for the project. One for the UX/UI design and another firm for the development and customization of the site. Once launched, we transitioned the work in-house for our design and dev/ops teams to manage and develop further.

Now, after three years of experience with the CMS, we still feel we made the correct choice. Episerver CMS does not get in the way of what we want to accomplish but instead supports us through any task that may be at hand.

Pro Tip: When reading reviews, positive or negative, try to discern when the reviewer is talking about the platform specifically or their implementation of the product. Some of the negative reviews are less about the CMS and more about the implementation or perhaps a lack of training or just a misunderstanding about their solution.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Episerver CMS has allowed us to design, develop, deploy, and maintain our organization's website. The platform allows our editors to manage their content efficiently. Our designers and developers can update and extend the site's functionality without tears or the loss of hair.

  ### 30. Powerful, Flexible, and Customizable CMS

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 09, 2019

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Support is incredibly fast and responsive. May require a developer on retainer to get the most out of the platform, however, very powerful CMS.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Professional Services can be a bit disjointed. Sometimes feels as if organization is too big.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Replaced our old CMS with Episerver. Taking advantage of content personalization as well as Internationalization (translated pages).

  ### 31. Episerver enables our team to be productive. Love it!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 10, 2019

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Easy to use tools, Cloud based so very little IT overheads. Commerce engine is really granular. And my team can just do their job's with it

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Nothing yet! We had Sitecore before, so we were really pleased to move onto Episerver for it is really much simpler and yet more complete too. Great find!

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Episerver is really easy to use and has some great featues that teams can use without training. Thoroughly recommend it for small-mid sized teams that need to personalise, test & integrate their sites. I am pleased we found Epi.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Multi-site, lead acquisisiton through content. Personalisation based on location to provide the local messageing to en gage and drive bookings. Connection with Salesforce CRM

  ### 32. Since switching to EpiServer our entire site not only looks fabulous, but is user friendly and easy.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2019

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The best part of Epi is the way you can set up user workflows. The process for new pages and updates to pages is so easy and user friendly.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I don't like how we are stuck with certain page types for specific elements, however I understand we needed to make our web pages more standardized.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Build in more budget to add customization and allow for growth once you launch.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have increased our overall membership since switching. Users are able to navigate more intuitively and information is broken out well, and more strategically thought out.

  ### 33. Antiquated CMS that only Developers with Giant Pockets can undertsand

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joshua P. | Freelance Graphic Designer & Illustrator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Nothing about this CMS is good for anyone. I find no positives.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

This CMS was created to bleed the most amount of money out of a company. Nothing is secure, and no integration is out of the box. Do you need your CMS to do anything? Get ready to pay out the nose for 1 of 5 companies that can do all the work for you.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Don't use this.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our news site is hosted on it. I see no benefits of using this. Biggest mistake the company has made.

  ### 34. Episerver

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I like that once it is set up, it is so easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

That it can get bogged down if too many people are using it at the same time. It also had a huge learning curve to it, and it wasn't easy to learn all of the many tricks.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Make it more user friendly for people without coding experience to be able to use this!

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can instantly push content without the help of our IT department. We also are able to stay more fresh, and have more relateable content on our site.

  ### 35. Clunky & Inefficient CMS that requires many workarounds

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 31, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Not much to like when you compare it to other functioning platforms.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Search feature is broken and makes it difficult to quickly navigate the system for pages or media. Everything is a manual process and takes time away from other projects.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Website management/content management. Very little benefits.

  ### 36. Non-intuitive CMS

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 31, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

We are eager to see what the latest version has to offer. We are on the second to most recent version.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Clunky and buggy. OUr system is setup where even a simple update can take a long time and involve many many clicks. It is difficult to find files and we have a bunch of work arounds and functions that do not work.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

EPI server is our CMS for our website globallu.

  ### 37. Most non-intuitive CMS ever

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lilledeshan B. | Publications Editor, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 21, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I like the way it looks on the reader side.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

It's very complicated to assemble a blog if you're a content creator. You have to upload media within different parameters, you have to go in and out of a page to assemble, and the biggest pain in the ass is the difficulty in saving, and/or unpublishing a blog.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Stick with Foundation or Wordpress instead.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's used as an information dissemination tool, and it's great when you're reading it, but as a user it's really hard to use. It's not easy like wordpress or foundation where you just format the photo and plop it in.

**Official Response from Julia Maguire:**

> Hi there,

We're very sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience with Episerver. But thank you for the feedback. Users often tell us how easy it is to use the platform so we want to ensure that you have everything in place to help you make the most out of your platform. We will make sure that someone from our customer success or account management team reaches out to you.

Thanks.

  ### 38. Decent CMS for an E-commerce system

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 24, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

It's a good framework that allows you to do whatever you want (though see Dislikes) - the API system is excellent and easy to work with. One of the few Windows based CMS systems.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Overly complicated and requires a developer to make real changes. Even support team has issues understanding how things work.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed an ecommerce system that could be highly customized and Episerver fit the bill.

  ### 39. Lessons Learned

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Investment Management | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 19, 2016

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Delay publish feature
Immediate updates to live sites
Mega menu brings end-users closer to content in fewer clicks.
Refresh Report function
Various page and content types
Automatic archiving feature

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

We are on an older version and use an older editor. We have problems with changes not saving, functions like spell-checker and page-moves not working as designed. It would probably be better for me to complete this survey after we upgrade this year.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Have full-time dedicated Developers. Use separate "Projects" or "Platforms" if multiple areas are using the product to allow for separate reporting and easier system enhancements.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We no longer have to manually hold pages for release at certain times.
We can automatically archive news items at the time we write them.

  ### 40. Website

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Utilities | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2018

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

It is very easy to navigate. Once I got the hang of it, it was incredibly simple to use. It is so much easier than the last software we were using.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I'm not sure if it's the software or my web connection, but if I don't use it for a minute or so it automatically logs me off. Not really a deal breaker, but kind of annoying. There is also no spellcheck in some of the blocks, like the accordion block.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

This product is very useful for backend web editing, I am a big fan!

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using episerver as the backend for our new website. It is one of easiest software I have used for content authoring.

  ### 41. This solution works well when your IT Web Dev staff has experience with MS Dot Net.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

This website solution makes it so much easier for a Site Merchandiser to have a ton of control on their own over site content (without having to go to Web Dev for every little thing).

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

I often feel like tasks are much more difficult than need be. Sometimes even just moving around the software is not the easiest. I think our Web Dev team has something to do with that, however, since they added code to control some things like site look and feel.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Don't let your partner make too many choices for you without consulting you for your opinion. Our partner ended up having to be let go since they made so many choices for us without asking us what we thought. It was infuriating to have to go back and "fix" things that we should have never had to do.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Epi is in the process of replacing our MS Dot Net home-grown sites. It is supposed to make it much quicker and easier to spin up new sites for our new brands we are adding.

  ### 42. Most usable CMS ever!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Episerver focuses on good user experience both for end users / customers AND for the business folks who have to use the product on the other side of the screen to create and manage those end experiences. Their admin features are rich, broad and highly usable which is unusual for a CMS.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

It's not cheap. The license may be more than the implementation, but considering the reduced development and support costs of empowering business users it ends up paying for itself in total cost of ownership.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Schedule a demo and ask them to focus on something that's frustrating in your current content management workflow 'cause it's very likely that it would be less frustrating with Episerver.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's much easier for non-developers to manage content without the risk and instability of a free / cheap / open-source CMS.

  ### 43. Episerver CMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Episerver makes it really easy to create visitor groups based off customer behavior.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Episerver does take a little getting used to, but if you have great developers, it can be a user-friendly tool.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Epi has a great opportunity to personalize websites within the tool. We've been able to target customers better by showing more relevant content.

  ### 44. Significant upgrade at a very reasonable cost

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Setup was very easy, and the learning curve was minimal. The tool gave our team a great deal of flexibility out of the box for our new site. It was really a great platform to launch our new site on.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Really nothing significant, all in all it was a great product.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Complete overhaul of our B2B site; the foundation for our digital transformation, including web personalization, potential ecommerce, and enhanced user tracking

  ### 45. Poor user interface

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 08, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

There is really nothing that I like about this product

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The user interface is awkward at best. The editor "cleans" the html changing the original design.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Giving the marketing department access to edit and create pages without the need for IT involvement, but it seems every project needs a dedicated IT employee of contractor because of the difficulty with the application.

  ### 46. Master a few basics and you'll be fine

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Maritime | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 03, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Simple block building for web parts, connectivity to Asia is not great

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Can be tricky for first time users, do not try with weak internet

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Website, news posting, events, services, products etc

  ### 47. Waukesha County Review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David K. | Solutions Administrator, Government Administration, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

The overall flexibility of the product and the support for it are wonderful.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Because it is so flexible, there are are fewer out of box blocks to use. You need to construct everything, even common use items at times.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

I think it is more than a CMS. I describe it as a platform/framework for building a web presence. Thus, you can take it in any direction you need to.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use the product as a communications tool between our government services and the constituents. It allows us to easily pass information along.

  ### 48. Very polished platform that works great for both editors and developers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Daniel O. | Solution Architect and Competence Coach .NET, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2016

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

As a developer I really like that they have made my life easier overall. It's small things like reducing build and compile times to upgrading procedure which is really smooth. It's easy and fast to extend your current solution and uses a strongly typed model in the background. It's a million small things that add up to two big words: Productivity and Innovation.
As an editor, Episerver is really easy to use. The core functionality of updating and publishing is prioritized while advanced functionality is more hidden which leads to a simple and clean user interface that editors love. An Episerver editor typically needs very little training to be productive.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Episervers weak side is actually that they are bad at communicating what a good platform they actually have. So Episervers marketing would be my only answer here. But on the other hand I prefer a company that focuses on making a really great product instead of selling a crappy one so...

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Episerver CMS might not have ALL possible features. Other CMSs will score higher if you just check if functionality X Y Z exist. The difference is that Episerver actually does the core functionality great! It really does. The few features it actually lacks you will never use anyway. There is always a balance between making the CMS easy-to-use and able to solve generic problems. I think Episerver has found a great balance here. Use it! Love it!

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I've built most solutions from global intranets in the cloud to e-commerce solutions to government websites.

  ### 49. Easy, breezy, resultful

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elena P. | Email/Marketing Automation Manager, Brand Experience, Marketing and Advertising, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 28, 2017

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Ease of use is my favorite thing! Quick to edit and make changes; super flexible to run multiple tests simultaneously; Episerver forms functionalities empowers the marketer to create campaigns quickly and easily.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Sometimes the admin UI does not respond while authoring content causing undue frustration.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

Make sure you have a content migration strategy in place.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Customize and personalize content for a variety of users allow us to create meaningful insights and relationships with visitors which has allowed us to improve our conversions by serving the right content at the right time.

  ### 50. With an active inbound marketing strategy, Episerver is key in moving our business forward.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Thomas Allen K. | Creative Services Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 09, 2016

**What do you like best about Optimizely Content Management System?**

Block Structure for maximum flexibility
Ease of editing content
UI is user friendly
Ease of Building and Adding new pages and content
Admin side and database works well when regsitering user information and supporting our customers
Ease of customization working through our Episerver implementation partner
The support that we receive from Episerver is world class. If there is a problem you can count on them for a resolution.

**What do you dislike about Optimizely Content Management System?**

While I like the flexibility of building forms, the form builder is a bit tough to work with and gives inconsistent builds until you understand its limitations and develop workarounds. Forms work well and execute or needs well, building them is a bit cumbersome at times.

**Recommendations to others considering Optimizely Content Management System:**

If you are looking for a content management solution for a medium to large sized business, consider Episerver as your CMS platform. Ease of use with high level support. We have been satisfied with Episerver since 2009.

**What problems is Optimizely Content Management System solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With Episerver, we can easily make a vision a reality. When content is requested or we need to communicate a solution that helps solve a problem in our industry, we have the tools to execute to our plan. We've built and audience and seen our online quote requests maintain a healthy pace. Episerver offers a progressive, customizable solution along with world class support.
