"Open VPN Review"
What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

OpenVPN Access Server Review

As a cybersecurity compliance professional, I appreciate OpenVPN Access Server for its balance of security, flexibility, and ease of deployment. It provides a reliable way to establish secure remote access while maintaining compliance with frameworks like HITRUST and SOC 2. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

Limited Built-in Reporting: While logging is available, the built-in reporting and analytics features are lacking. More advanced insights often require external tools.

Resource Consumption: Compared to other VPN solutions, OpenVPN Access Server can be resource-intensive, especially at scale. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"OpenVPN Access Server Has Been Solid For Us For 10 Years"
What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

For my team and I, OpenVPN Access Server has been part of our infrastructure for the last 10 years. When we first had a need for a reliable, day to day VPN, we researched and spoke with others in our field looking for recommendations. Unanimously most of the people we spoke with recommended OpenVPN. We were tasked with setting it up for a team of about 15 people and found it easy to roll it out even to those in other physical locations with simple to follow instructions. We integrated it for our entire team in less than 24 hours. We consulted with their customer support on a few questions during the initial setup and they were extremely helpful in ensuring a smooth transition from our old VPN server. Our team uses OpenVPN daily with some of us staying connected 24x7. We found that the feature set was more than enough for us as we only use the typical features that most would. With that said we have the flexibility to use more advanced features if we should need them in the future. When it comes time to renew our licensing, it's as simple as copy and pasting the new licenses code. There's no need for a restart or anything that would compromise our connectivity. We have been extremely happy in the 10 years that we have been using OpenVPN Access Server. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

The only thing that has been a challenge for us over the years is that the licensing model has changed. Even with that change, we were willing to pay a little bit more knowing that the OpenVPN Access Server has worked extremely well for us over the last 10 years. After speaking with their team, they helped us through choosing the right model for oour needs and ever since then we just pay the renewal fees, update our license key, and move on. "Stable VPN solution"
What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

What I appreciate the most about OpenVPN Access Server is its remarkable stability. We implemented a self-hosted server in our company over four years ago, and we have encountered no issues thus far. It operates swiftly and reliably. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

What I like least in my experience with OpenVPN server is the web interface for creating access groups. While the interface allows you to create multiple groups with different routes to various networks, it does not allow you to name those routes. Consequently, over time, administration becomes quite challenging, as one cannot remember which network range corresponds to each. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Adam Bullock of OpenVPN Access Server

Thanks for the review, Agustin! No issues in four years is awesome, proud of that, and happy it's been reliable for you. I also appreciate your feedback on the web interface for creating access groups - I will bring that feedback to the team. Thanks, again!

"Happy that we switched to OpenVPN AS"
What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

Administration interface is nice. Coming from a console only OpenVPN installation, it is much easier to set things up using a UI. I had to use customer support once and they were fast and helped to resolve the problem quickly. We use it on daily basis to access restricted resources and we had very little problems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

Somewhat complicated deployment in Azure. I would have expected a better experience there, but part of that is definitely due to my inexperience in network configuration. Differences between the community OpenVPN and this product caused some confusion. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Adam Bullock of OpenVPN Access Server

Appreciate the review! And thank you for the feedback on Azure integration, I'll pass that along to the team. Agreed on MFA being VITAL in these times :)

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

OpenVPN should maintain their older APK files, as we require an APK version that is compatible with Android 8 Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"OpenVPN is an excellent choice"
What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

We migrated VPN solutions around 4 years ago and identified OpenVPN as the ideal solution for us. It ticked a lot of boxes for us, particularly with regards to 2FA and a zero trust approach to user's access with profiles. Pricing is very competitive too. Customer support is very good too, I recently had to contact them about an issue following a Ubuntu upgrade and received helpful and prompt responses Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

Some management tasks are command line only and can be tricky to locate initially but there are plenty of support resources available Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Adam Bullock of OpenVPN Access Server

Thanks for the review, Daniel, and for mentioning the zero trust approach. There is power in using the features of Access Server to enforce zero trust access, glad you are using it in that manner. For more details: https://openvpn.net/solutions/use-cases/enforcing-zero-trust/

"Great Enterprise VPN Server"
What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

OpenVPN Access Server stands out for its balance of strong security, ease of use, and scalability. It provides a reliable VPN solution with a user-friendly web interface, making deployment and management straightforward even for those with limited networking experience. Its support for multiple authentication methods, seamless integration with existing infrastructure, and ability to handle remote access and site-to-site connections efficiently make it a versatile choice. Plus, its robust encryption ensures data protection while maintaining stable performance across various devices and operating systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

While OpenVPN Access Server is a powerful and flexible VPN solution, its licensing model can be a drawback for some users, as it limits the number of concurrent connections unless additional licenses are purchased. Additionally, while the web-based management interface is convenient, it may feel somewhat basic for advanced users who prefer more granular control. Initial setup and configuration can also be slightly complex for those unfamiliar with networking concepts, especially when dealing with firewall rules and routing. Despite these minor drawbacks, it remains a solid and reliable choice for secure remote access. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Adam Bullock of OpenVPN Access Server

Appreciate this comprehensive review! Stability, reliability, great to read those positives. I'll follow up with the team on your comments about the web UI. Thanks!
