## About OpenVPN Access Server
OpenVPN Access Server is a self-hosted VPN server application that provides organizations with secure remote access to their private network, applications, and data. Built as business VPN software, it can be deployed in the cloud or on-premises, giving companies a flexible VPN for business teams that are remote, hybrid, or in-office. Because it runs on infrastructure you control, it's easily one of the best business VPN and best VPN for business picks for organizations that want a genuine VPN service for business without long-term vendor lock-in, whether you're a growing team looking for a VPN for small business or a larger organization that needs an enterprise VPN with high availability and clustering. Positioned as a remote access VPN, or simply a VPN for remote access, Access Server layers in essential zero trust network access (ZTNA) capabilities: granular permissions, least-privilege enforcement, and verification that connections come from trusted devices and locations. This makes it a strong secure remote access VPN choice for protecting sensitive data and isolating SaaS applications from the open internet. It also supports site-to-site VPN connections, extending your business network securely to remote offices. For deployment, Access Server offers real flexibility as VPN server hosting: pre-configured images are available for AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, DigitalOcean, Oracle Cloud, and IBM Cloud, giving you a cloud VPN service option, or you can run it as an on-premises VPN on your own hardware. Whether you prefer a fully managed VPN experience or hands-on control, Access Server can function as a VPN-as-a-service through your infrastructure provider, and it pairs an intuitive Admin Web UI, REST/XML-RPC API, and command-line tools with strong security: built-in X.509 PKI, SAML/LDAP/RADIUS authentication, multi-factor authentication, and AES-256-GCM encryption. The result is one of the more complete VPN solutions for businesses that need scalable, cost-effective, and genuinely secure connectivity as they grow.

## OpenVPN Access Server Reviews
 ### 1. Secure, User-Friendly Remote Access That Just Works

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Filipe C. | Digital Marketing & E-commerce Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 06, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

What I appreciate most about OpenVPN Access Server is the strong security it offers, all while remaining user-friendly. It enables secure remote access to internal systems from any location, maintaining a stable and dependable connection. The setup process is simple for users, and after connecting, it operates quietly in the background without interfering with daily tasks.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

ometimes the connection can be a bit slow, and if the VPN disconnects unexpectedly, it can interrupt work and require reconnecting. While it doesn’t happen often, it can be inconvenient when it does.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenVPN Access Server solves the problem of secure remote access to internal systems and sensitive data. It allows our team to safely connect to private services from different locations, protecting systems from unauthorized access. This benefits us by improving security, enabling remote work, and ensuring that only authorized users can access critical platforms without exposing them to the public internet.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Appreciate the review, Filipe - glad its is working well for you. In terms of a slow connection, make sure whoever is in charge of your VPN server has DCO enabled. It increases speeds pretty drastically if not enabled.

 ### 2. Smooth Setup, Spot-On Documentation, and Easy to Use

It is very easy to integrate at my end with our multiple vendors and with their software.

The feature is amazing. Implementation is super easy.

 ### 3. Effortless Setup, Essential for Remote Access

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andre .

**Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I like that OpenVPN Access Server is simple to set up and simple to use, making its simplicity the best part. I appreciate being able to set up groups and control their access to different places, which is key for me. It also integrates well with our Microsoft products, and the SAML authentication with profile locked configuration is super nice. Setting it up was super easy, just requiring an Ubuntu machine and some basic steps before installation.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I guess if it had a little bit smaller price for self hosted version, maybe it could be even more appealing to a larger crowd.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use OpenVPN Access Server to connect and access the office’s internal network easily. It's simple to set up and use. I like setting up groups and their access, which is key.

 ### 4. Reliable VPN with Easy Setup and Connectivity Glitch on Mac

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Maayan B. | Data Analyst, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 04, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I find OpenVPN Access Server to be a very good VPN. It's important for me because it allows me to connect to servers without changing my IP. The initial setup was very easy and simple, as we could download it online or from the store, and it worked perfectly.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I'm working with still VPN, one for snow flag and one for post class. And, actually, I can work both with those both two in PC, it's work. But in Mac, it doesn't work. It's disturbed each other. Even though one of them doesn't change the IP at all.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenVPN Access Server allows me to connect to our Postgres database from work, serving as the only way I can access it as per our DevOps team's decision.

 ### 5. Flexible Multi-Platform VPN with Room for Improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Divyesh V. | SPOC Client cordination, Security and Investigations, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 17, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I like using OpenVPN Access Server for connecting our different environments to access resources. I appreciate that it provides support for Linux, which helps us meet our client's requirements, unlike other products which only support Windows and Mac. I find the device management, control, and geo-fencing features useful, despite the limited features available for Linux. I also found the initial setup to be easy after understanding the architecture of OpenVPN.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I find the need to manually download and share configuration files instead of having the ability to push the config directly to the end system. Also, the control on Linux devices could be improved.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenVPN Access Server supports Linux, resolving OS platform challenges and meeting client requirements.

 ### 6. Effortless Server Setup That Simplifies Our Business

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 07, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

The server is very simple to set up and get working with a few clicks. This made it really easy for us as a business. The support was top notch; receiving daily updates of how to do certain things and then an optional meeting to go through any questions I had where they explained a lot of the key services and points of information.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I can't think of anything I dislike about the server.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The OpenVPN solution was beneficial to us in two important ways. During our building transition, it was essential for our employees to have reliable access to our network, and OpenVPN made this possible. Furthermore, as we were testing a business application hosted in the cloud, the VPN provided us with the secure access we needed.

 ### 7. Effortless Setup Makes Deployment a Breeze

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Ease of setup for the end user. We had to deploy about 20 OpenServer Appliances in about 2 months. Getting the end users setup and working was a breeze

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Not having Port Groups setup for server access. If I need someone to have access to one server and just RDP (for example), i need to create 2 rules (1 for TCP and 1 for UDP). It would be nice to be able to bundle TCP/UDP ports together.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The big business problem that they helped us solve was the fact that we had our clients on Sonicwall SMA for the past 10 years or so and we were able to switch all of them over in about 2 months.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review, and appreciate you being a customer! Love to hear how easy it is to setup for the end user, and I hope your experience with Access Server has made the migration from Sonicwall SMA worth it :)

Your specific feedback is appreciated when it comes to setting up rules and being able to bundle TCP/UDP ports together, I will pass that along to the team. Thank you!

 ### 8. Secure and User-Friendly with Seamless Licensing

I like that OpenVPN Access Server is easy to use and easy to manage, and it works great. The activation and licensing process is seamless and easy, which I appreciate. Also, the initial setup was very easy for my team.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I wish there was some more cleanup features and reporting in the web UI. Clean out old profiles/users based on connection dates and so on.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use OpenVPN Access Server for secure access to our k8s cluster in Azure.

 ### 9. Effortless Security with Intuitive GUI

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Spencer G.

**Reviewed Date:** January 14, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I really like the GUI front and backend of OpenVPN Access Server. It's easy to use and very informative. The initial setup was easy as well.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I don't think I have any specific reasons right now as it is still pretty new to me.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use OpenVPN Access Server for external consultants to access company systems, connecting to cloud apps not open to the public.

 ### 10. Easy setup and administration

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Graham K. | IT Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 29, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

The setup on AWS is very straightforward and administration is simple.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

The customer support was not very good when I had to troubleshoot billing issues and it took several weeks to resolve a simple problem

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenVPN provides secure access to our software test environments and private systems hosted on AWS

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review here, Graham - dang, sorry to hear about the trouble with a billing issue. That kind of issue is uncommon for our team. Can you reach out to me at adam.bullock@openvpn.com and I can better understand what happened so it won't happen again?

Dropping a link to our AWS integration for anyone curious.

 ### 11. seamlessly gets connected to the server without any hassle

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** sandesh g. | UI/UX support engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 07, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Its easy to set up even on the first time installation on the system. Thanks to the documentation and simple architecture ui interface.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

They are on the right path. But not sure on the service support side as I personally haven't faced any issues.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It gets me connected to any client just by quickly establishing the connection and also I can switch between the diferent clients(server connections)

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review, Sandesh - glad you find it user friendly and easy to use. And good call on always upgrading the version, we are always improving performance!

 ### 12. Happy that we switched to OpenVPN AS

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matyas S. | Lead developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Administration interface is nice. Coming from a console only OpenVPN installation, it is much easier to set things up using a UI. I had to use customer support once and they were fast and helped to resolve the problem quickly. We use it on daily basis to access restricted resources and we had very little problems.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Somewhat complicated deployment in Azure. I would have expected a better experience there, but part of that is definitely due to my inexperience in network configuration. Differences between the community OpenVPN and this product caused some confusion.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It solved the problem of yearly re-configuring the OpenVPN server on our EdgeRouter. Distribution of the VPN profiles is a huge help and the MFA option is a must have feature in these times.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Appreciate the review! And thank you for the feedback on Azure integration, I'll pass that along to the team. Agreed on MFA being VITAL in these times :)

 ### 13. I’m very satisfied with OpenVPN. It’s a reliable tool that ensures a stable connection .

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Krystian J. | It administrator, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 25, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Simple setup.
Strong connection security.
Fast network connection and stability

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Sometimes requires minor adjustments based on the network environment

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenVPN Access Server solves several key problems, which have been beneficial for my use:

Secure Remote Access: It provides a secure VPN connection, allowing access to a private network from anywhere, which is essential for remote work. This benefits me by ensuring that my connection is safe, even when accessing sensitive information from outside the office.

Ease of Management: The centralized management console makes it easy to monitor and control access to the network, which reduces the complexity of handling multiple connections. This has made managing my VPN setup much more efficient.

Scalability: OpenVPN Access Server allows easy scaling, whether for a small team or large organization, providing flexibility for different sizes of operations. This is useful if I need to expand network access for additional users in the future.

High Performance: With its ability to handle a large number of concurrent users without compromising performance, OpenVPN ensures that remote connections remain fast and stable, which is crucial for maintaining productivity.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review, Krystian! Simple, strong, and fast = great things to like!

 ### 14. Solid and reliable secure VPN that just works.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bob L. | IT Consultant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Once its setup and configured it is a very solid and reliable secure VPN that is easy to use and integrate into your networks.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

The initial setup is a bit involved and requires a Linux box to run on. Updating the software and Linux system does take some time and Linux knowledge. If a user changes their MFA device, ie Phone, it takes some administration to setup the new MFA prompt to add the new device for the end user.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helps to secure connections to our AWS environment. It is easier and more reliable than what we've had in the past as far as VPN software goes.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> That's what we aim for, it just WORKS. Thanks, Bob. And you're absolutely right: using Access Server does require that Linux knowledge. Thanks for helping spread the work about a solid and reliable VPN that just works! :)

 ### 15. OpenVPN Review

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Khalid A. | Chief Information Officer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 15, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

It is secure, fast and easy to setup and work with. The support is excellent and fast. We use it on daily basis for our local staff and vendors. Alot of features are very helpful to our staff and it is easy to integrate with our local IAM solution. We hve implemented it in one day

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

In Saudi Arabia, OpenVPN site is blocked by Internet provider. This makes it difficult to pay online for the subscription.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

All our local admin staff and vendors are using OpenVPN on daily basis to support our current apps.

 ### 16. Excellent, easy to manage remote access VPN solution

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jesse C. | Systems Engineering Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Easy to implement, excellent device compatibility, extremely reliable

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

A little on the expensive side. Support is not super helpful in my experience. You need to reset MFA tokens for users from the CLI which is clunky

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In my experience it is the easiest way to implement MFA for remote access. Also for my clients with limited remote access VPN functionality this is easy to sell and implement

 ### 17. Modern VPN Solution that supports 365 SAML and MFA

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 18, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I wanted to avoid using RADIUS for authentication and this ticked all the boxes so I can setup authentication through 365 SSO and MFA.

It works well and their support has been pretty helpful in my experience.
OpenVPN Connect works great for Windows and macOS

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I wish they had a GUI client for Linux. Currently you have to use OpenVPN3 cli. Network Manager doesn't support the pop up windows for SAML authentication.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Solved the problem of needing MFA and integration authentication with 365/Entra ID. This allows us to not need another on-prem server just to handle VPN authentication.

 ### 18. Quick and thorough support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dominique W. | System Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 18, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Easy to setup. Works well. Easy to use client interface.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

There is a slight learning curve with using a Linux OS.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Was able to migrate a server to Azure and give users access to the server using the VPN created with OpenVPN Access Server.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Awesome, great to hear, Dominique. Glad you got through the learning curve - happy things are going well. Thank you for your review and for being a customer!

 ### 19. Very good product with an easy step-by-step deployment guide

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 20, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

The ease of sign-in and deployment using SMAL SSO make OpenVPN such an easy product for end users to provision their own VPNs with limited IT knowledge. Its ease of Azure deployment made the whole setup process a breeze.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

While it does support SAML, you still need to add the users manually (from my findings) to the OpenVPN server, it would be ideal if this pulled from the permissions on the enterprise app

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Flexible VPN with ease of end user setup for connecting to Azure servers

 ### 20. OPENVPN works perfectly for our business

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

It was very easy for our tech team to set up and configure , and for the end users it works perfectly with zero problems and gives us peace of mind

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

There has been nothing that I have disliked.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need Secure access and Open VPN provides this

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Awesome to hear, appreciate the 5-stars! And you got it, you need secure remote access, we can give you secure remote access. Thanks for the review, and happy things are working well for you.

 ### 21. Solid choice for VPN server

**Reviewed Date:** February 20, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Easy to use and set up for required VPN connections to private subnets. MFA and user permissions were easy to set up and use. VPN profiles and the VPN client were easy to set up and use.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

User management outside of SSO is cumbersome. Making changes also sometimes didn't stick and had to refresh the page and reapply the changes a multiple times.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Secure private access to private subnet for remote workers to not expose production or devops servers to public.

 ### 22. Very pleasant, easy, intutive

I also love the flexibility it offers, supporting various devices and platforms, which is great for both personal and business use. Overall, it's an excellent solution for secure remote access.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I dont't have any things in mind at the moment.

Secure remote access

 ### 23. Easy to setup, very reliable

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Igor G. | DevOps Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 20, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Easy to setup, very reliable. OpenVPN clients are easy to setup too.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

It works well, but requires commercial licenses. It would be nice to have an Opensource version of it.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Security and access to Internal network.

 ### 24. A great tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

It's easy to impliment and set up. Being able to connect users to secure network remotly, quickly and easily is a time-saver and efficiant.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

If a user has a differnet device used for authentication, the user and profle has to be wiped and re-created. It would be nice to re-authenticate without having to delete users and profiles and then re-adding them again

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to add multiple users to a location(s) easly and quickly

 ### 25. Effective and Seamless

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David A. | President, E-Learning, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Once it is set up, it's super easy to use, seamless, almost invisible yet effective. The customer support is excelllent.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Really nothing to dislike. As for most services, direct customer support is slightly hidden as they "encourage" the user to make use of docs, faqa, and automated assistants. But once you do get to customer support it is outstanding.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Serves nicely as a VPN.

 ### 26. Great tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 25, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

It can be used in different devices. Minimal setup required to get it working

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

One tedious task is dealing with SSL certificates and not a a clear straight forward way of doing it automatically.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Resources hidden under a private network and allowing people to access the private network.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review - I'll pass along the SSL certificates feedback to the team here. Appreciate the note about minimal setup to get it working, that's what we strive for!

 ### 27. versatile and easy to setup. Also audit friendly

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Victor C. | Senior Systems Administrator, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 13, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I like that the seat licences can be spread acros multiple servers automatically. It is also great that 2fa can be setup. Many security standards require that feature.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

It is pricey. We pay abut 9 dollars a user and that's a little high.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is allowing us to have a remote workforce.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review, and I'm glad everything is to your liking...except for cost, that is. I'll pass that along to the team. And regarding audit friendly, you are totally right. Dropping a note here, we recently announced being HIPAA compliant and SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, too!
