## About OpenVPN Access Server
OpenVPN Access Server is a self-hosted VPN server application that provides organizations with secure remote access to their private network, applications, and data. Built as business VPN software, it can be deployed in the cloud or on-premises, giving companies a flexible VPN for business teams that are remote, hybrid, or in-office. Because it runs on infrastructure you control, it's easily one of the best business VPN and best VPN for business picks for organizations that want a genuine VPN service for business without long-term vendor lock-in, whether you're a growing team looking for a VPN for small business or a larger organization that needs an enterprise VPN with high availability and clustering. Positioned as a remote access VPN, or simply a VPN for remote access, Access Server layers in essential zero trust network access (ZTNA) capabilities: granular permissions, least-privilege enforcement, and verification that connections come from trusted devices and locations. This makes it a strong secure remote access VPN choice for protecting sensitive data and isolating SaaS applications from the open internet. It also supports site-to-site VPN connections, extending your business network securely to remote offices. For deployment, Access Server offers real flexibility as VPN server hosting: pre-configured images are available for AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, DigitalOcean, Oracle Cloud, and IBM Cloud, giving you a cloud VPN service option, or you can run it as an on-premises VPN on your own hardware. Whether you prefer a fully managed VPN experience or hands-on control, Access Server can function as a VPN-as-a-service through your infrastructure provider, and it pairs an intuitive Admin Web UI, REST/XML-RPC API, and command-line tools with strong security: built-in X.509 PKI, SAML/LDAP/RADIUS authentication, multi-factor authentication, and AES-256-GCM encryption. The result is one of the more complete VPN solutions for businesses that need scalable, cost-effective, and genuinely secure connectivity as they grow.

## OpenVPN Access Server Reviews
 ### 1. Easy to Deploy, User-Friendly, Powerful and Reliable VPN.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gonzalo R. | COO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 06, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

Easy to deploy and access, user friendly

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

OpenVPN Access Server is powerful and reliable, but there are a few areas that could be improved. The administration interface can feel somewhat dated and not as intuitive as newer VPN or zero-trust platforms, especially during initial setup. Some configuration options are technical and may require documentation or prior networking experience, which can slow down onboarding for smaller teams.

Pricing can also become a concern as the number of users grows, since the licensing model may feel expensive compared with alternatives like WireGuard-based solutions or cloud-native VPN options. Integrations are functional, but they are not always as seamless as expected with modern identity providers, monitoring tools, or cloud environments.

Performance is generally stable, but depending on configuration and server resources, throughput may not always match lighter VPN solutions. It would be helpful to see a more modern UI, simpler deployment guides, clearer pricing tiers, stronger built-in monitoring, and easier integration with cloud platforms and identity management systems.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenVPN Access Server helps solve the need for secure remote access to internal systems, servers, and business applications without exposing them directly to the public internet. It allows remote users and external devices to connect through an encrypted VPN tunnel, which improves security and makes access easier to control.

The main benefit is that it gives us a centralized way to manage VPN users, permissions, and connections. This is especially useful for teams that need to access private resources from different locations. It also helps reduce risk by keeping sensitive services behind the VPN instead of opening ports publicly.

Overall, OpenVPN Access Server provides a practical and reliable solution for remote connectivity, secure server access, and controlled network access. It benefits us by improving security, simplifying remote work, and giving administrators better visibility and control over who can connect to the network.

 ### 2. Easy to Use, Quiet in the Background, and Regularly Updated

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Djustin B. | Team Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I like that it offers a wide variety of countries to choose from for dedicated IP addresses, which lets us pick the best option for our specific use case. I also appreciate how easy it is to use, and that it runs quietly in the background while you work. On top of that, it’s great that the application is updated regularly, so it continues to improve with each update.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

OpenVPN is undoubtedly one of the best VPN services currently available. Another strong point is that their technical support is consistently available online to guide you and respond to any questions you may have.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The number of available servers is excellent. When I use OpenVPN, I have real peace of mind knowing my IP address is protected, and I don’t worry about leaks or exposure. If my internet goes down and then comes back, this is the first application to reconnect, so my real IP address is never exposed.

 ### 3. Simple, Reliable VPN with Easy Management

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kaung Htet H. | Network Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

What I like best about OpenVPN Access Server is how quickly it lets you deploy a secure remote-access VPN without getting lost in complex configuration. The web-based UI is clean and intuitive, so even when managing users, certificates, or access control, everything is centralized and easy to navigate. Compared to traditional VPN setups, it saves a lot of time during initial deployment and ongoing maintenance.

From a workflow perspective, the integration with directory services (like LDAP/Active Directory) is a big win—it simplifies user management and avoids the need to maintain separate credentials. The client provisioning is also very smooth; users can download pre-configured clients, which reduces support overhead significantly.

Performance-wise, it’s stable and reliable for day-to-day operations, even with multiple concurrent users. I’ve also found the flexibility in routing (split tunneling vs full tunnel) useful depending on the use case.

Another strong point is its balance between cost and value. You can start small and scale as needed, which makes it practical for both lab environments and production use. Plus, the documentation and community support are solid, so troubleshooting or expanding setups doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Overall, it has improved my workflow by reducing setup time, minimizing manual configuration, and making remote access management much more efficient.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

One drawback of OpenVPN Access Server is that some advanced configurations still require CLI access, even though the web UI is generally user-friendly. For network engineers who want fine-grained control (routing tweaks, policy-based behavior, or deeper troubleshooting), switching between GUI and CLI can slow down workflows.

Another limitation is the licensing model. While it’s easy to start, costs can increase quickly as the number of concurrent users grows, which may not be ideal for larger deployments compared to some alternative VPN solutions.

Performance tuning options are somewhat limited in the UI as well. For example, optimizing throughput or handling high-load scenarios often requires manual adjustments and deeper knowledge, rather than being guided through the interface.

Additionally, logging and monitoring could be improved. The built-in logs are useful but not always detailed or easy to analyze for complex issues, especially without integrating external monitoring tools. More advanced analytics or built-in visualization would make troubleshooting faster.

Overall, while it’s reliable and easy to deploy, improving advanced configuration visibility, scaling cost efficiency, and enhancing monitoring features would make it even more powerful.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before using OpenVPN Access Server, we struggled with providing secure remote access to internal systems, especially for users working from different locations. The setup process with traditional VPN solutions was time-consuming, required complex manual configuration, and often led to inconsistent user experiences. Supporting end users (client setup, credential issues, connectivity problems) also took a significant amount of time.

After implementing OpenVPN Access Server, we were able to centralize and simplify remote access. The web-based UI made it much easier to manage users, assign permissions, and monitor connections. Integration with directory services (like LDAP/Active Directory) allowed us to reuse existing credentials, which reduced administrative overhead and improved security consistency.

One major benefit is the reduction in deployment and support time. What previously took hours to configure per user can now be done in minutes with auto-generated client profiles. This has significantly reduced the number of support tickets related to VPN access. From a performance standpoint, the solution has been stable and reliable, allowing users to securely access internal resources without frequent disconnects.

In terms of ROI, it has helped minimize operational effort while maintaining strong security. We didn’t need to invest heavily in additional infrastructure or specialized training, which made onboarding faster. Overall, it solved our remote access challenges by making VPN deployment simpler, user management more efficient, and day-to-day operations more reliable.

We migrated VPN solutions around 6 years ago and identified OpenVPN as the ideal solution for us. Customer support is very good too, I recently had to contact them about an issue following a Ubuntu upgrade and received helpful and prompt responses

Some management tasks are command line only and can be tricky to locate initially but there are plenty of support resources available. As mentioned, their customer support is excellent, very responsive and concise

OpenVPN provides my business with a secure VPN that is easy for staff to use

**Reviewed by:** Sharin S. | Team Lead - Azure and Windows server, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 24, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

We deployed an OpenVPN on an Ubuntu VM. The installation is straightforward, and no need to mess with the complex firewall rules. We use Microsoft Azure Entra ID, so integrating SAML for single sign-on was a big win. Our team was a mix of Windows laptops and Mac OS machines. The OpenVPN client works seamlessly across all platforms. I was able to assign specific access rules to different users, which helped us maintain regulatory compliance and reduce unnecessary exposure.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

While logs are available, I wish there were more built-in analytics, like bandwidth usage per user and connection history dashboards. Setting up split tunneling and custom routes is not an easy task. It's scalable, but we need to work plan for adding more than 50 users.

We have contractors working from different locations, we created a user profile for him and gave him access to Development environment, and sent him the connection link. Within 10 mins, they are securely connected and working without any issues.

> Thanks for this review and for outlining the case use we solve for you! I hear you on more built-in analytics, I'll pass it along to the team. Appreciate you being a customer! Dropping a link on with a tutorial on how to configure SAML with Entra ID below.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 07, 2026

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

The server is very simple to set up and get working with a few clicks. This made it really easy for us as a business. **What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I can't think of anything I dislike about the server.

The OpenVPN solution was beneficial to us in two important ways. ### 36. Reliable VPN with Strong Authentication and Seamless Cross-Platform Support

This is the ideal solution for environments where uncompromising security and smooth integration are essential. ### 37. OpenVPN a True Partner for Remote Workers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ashish A. | Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2022

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I work remotely for a US company, and I have to access the US servers, which requires my location to be in the US. Many of the other VPNs provide remote access; however, they are very slow. Over the past couple of years, OpenVPN has improved its speed and provides the best speed I have seen. The UI design is very minimalistic and user-friendly. The best part is that it is beginner-friendly as well.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

It will be best if it can be integrated into cloud platforms like AWS, Databricks, as well. This will be more useful, and we can access it directly in the cloud tools.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVPN Access Server:**

If any company uses confidential data and works remotely on a highly secure server, then OpenVPN is for you. It is affordable, secure, and highly reliable, so go for it.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am a new employee and work remotely at this time. Our company handles the data from different nations and collects it on a remote server, and as the data is confidential, we need to use the VPN to access those data. Our company uses OpenVPN for this purpose. Without using OpenVPN, it is impossible to access the data and work remotely.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for this! We offer integration with many virtual private cloud platforms - including AWS. We know this is something our customers want, and continue to roll out new integrations every quarter.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joseph M. | Network Administrator & IT Security Officer, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?**

I like the fact that OpenVPN Access Server supports MFA and SAML for client login. We had used the built in MFA previously using Google Authenticator, and now client login via SAML and we MFA on the SSO side.

**What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?**

We have used OpenVPN for years now and like it quite a bit. Managing a cluster of VPN servers could use some iteration and improvements but it pretty solid all things considered.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We went with OpenVPN Access Server because we didn't want to use a VPN solution that was directly tied to our campus firewall. It was a relatively cheap VPN solution to implement in our environment. We primarily use it for remote access to on-premises servers. The number of on-premises servers has been decreasing over the years as more things went cloud, but we still needed a reasonably priced and secure solution for granting access to those servers.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review, Joseph, appreciate it! Happy to hear Access Server works with your use case, especially with SAML (linking to documentation below for anyone curious).

 ### 40. Straightforward Web Interface That Works Perfectly on the First Try

I really like the web interface because it makes managing users and certificates very straightforward. On top of that, it connects successfully on the first try and works perfectly on any computer.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

You don’t have to be a networking genius to use it. It’s a solid product that works well, gives me a lot of peace of mind, and stays super stable. For me, it’s really worth the price.

Ease of setup for the end user. We had to deploy about 20 OpenServer Appliances in about 2 months. Getting the end users setup and working was a breeze

Not having Port Groups setup for server access. If I need someone to have access to one server and just RDP (for example), i need to create 2 rules (1 for TCP and 1 for UDP). It would be nice to be able to bundle TCP/UDP ports together.

**What problems is OpenVPN Access Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The big business problem that they helped us solve was the fact that we had our clients on Sonicwall SMA for the past 10 years or so and we were able to switch all of them over in about 2 months.

**Official Response from Adam Bullock:**

> Thanks for the review, and appreciate you being a customer! Love to hear how easy it is to setup for the end user, and I hope your experience with Access Server has made the migration from Sonicwall SMA worth it :)
