What do you like best?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

OpenSuSE keeps up with the cutting edge of software, providing multiple versions and paths for whether or not you want reasonably stable or absolute bleeding edge. It's pretty easy to get and build software on the platform, and works well as a desktop O/S for a laptop. It also runs well on older hardware that may not be up to the challenge of more demanding operating systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Between all the M&A activity that parent/sponsor company SuSE has been through over the past decade or two, I think OpenSuSE has gotten lost in the shuffle. It's hard for a company that has to make money to figure out how to fund these things, anyway, and provide the resources for a freely-available and community-supported platform, and I don't think SuSE has done the best job of making this happen in a way that benefits the community using it. Also, the short lifecycle of the releases - about 18 months - can be challenging to keep up with - it's really easy to get 4 years down the road on a version and realize you can no longer get software and updates because you're two major versions back with no support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Be prepared to keep up with the quick pace of updates and major version changes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I want to run Linux on my laptop rather than Windows so that I can more efficiently manage a large Linux and UNIX landscape. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

openSUSE has, hands down, the best KDE desktop experience of any distro out there, it has great theming and the defaults are pretty much perfect. On top of that, you have YAST2 for config in a nice visual manner, but can drop down to the command line for either finer tuned control than the GUI gives you or if you’re just more comfortable with it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Getting mono to install the way that I want to has always been less than comfortable, but that is, I think, more on me than openSUSE. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Using openSUSE LEAP to spin up some low powered VMs for PoC servers is really fantastic, that has allowed much greater flexibility to myself and other devs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I love that openSUSE is open source Linux, but still has many of the visual aspects of Windows. It helps to ease from one type of operating system to another. It's also extremely customization, which is a plus for both beginners and experts to the Linux system. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

There is a pretty major learning curve to certain aspects, most obvious when installing or updating software. Luckily, many tutorials are found online, but the system doesn't natively do things with one-click like many users are used to. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Read up on tutorials if you are lost! openSUSE does have a learning curve but most problems are easy to fix with a little research. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

openSUSE has given us the power to adapt to any type of computer or other phone/tablet, regardless of the operating system natively installed on the device. It lends flexibility since nothing is tied down to a particular system, and it's portable using only a flash drive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

What do you dislike?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I like that openSUSE offers both GNOME and KDE environments. Unlike many Linux distros, it's also pretty accessible to the average user- the graphic-based interface makes learning it a simple affair. With Gnome, though, you also have the option of keyboard-based action, which can be significantly faster for some users. Also, it's pretty cool looking. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It's only available in 64-bit these days. Sometimes I like to breathe new life into old laptops that come my way before passing them along, and I often can't use this distro for lack of hardware compatibility and support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

There are so many Linux distros that meet just about every use case. Shop around until you find the one you want. openSUSE is a great choice because it's super flexible and actively developed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

OpenSUSE provides a free desktop operating system. As such, it solves a number of business needs from Internet access to email to word processing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

There is a lot of documentation available.

openSUSE is Stable and you can use it for servers and workstations,

It takes a bit more time to get used to than you may have to with a Linux Mint for instance.

After you have installed it and you have the most important non-free packages installed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It requires technical skills.

Need to know a lot of terminal commands.

Because it's a rolling release distro it requires a good internet speed because it downloads many updates frequently. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Need to know Linux before using it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

A good operative system for workstations very reliable and secure Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

It is a very stable software, it is not susceptible to viruses, we use it for the servers, the amount of resources are less that are necessary in relation to the other software, the updates have worked correctly every time they have been implemented Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The installation is a little complex, and there is not so much technical personnel that knows the platform, also openSUSE has a bad rap for installing a lot of bloat in the form of recommended packages, which often tend to get re-installed even if the user tries to remove them Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Yast is one of the best tools that we have used in OpenSuse, we use it for the administration of the network, and updates, we have installed third party software and the work has been very easy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
