It has Flexibility of editing any solvers and creating a customized one. This flexibility is a great enabler to simulate any kind of physics. - IT has solvers for all kinds of physics. - Since it is an opensource developers/people from all around the world contribute to it. - Most of the universities develop new capabilities using OpenFoam and this makes it have State of the art numerics. Recommendations to others considering OpenFOAM: I would definitely recommend this for Students who are interested in CFD and willing to develop something in the feature. What problems is OpenFOAM solving and how is that benefiting you? I worked on multiphase flow problems which required solver manipulating for simulating certain kind of physics. What do you dislike about OpenFOAM? It is a numerical solver and post processing solution. But it lacks the visual IDE. Paraview a separate program has to be used in conjunction. I do CFD analysis on a 3D models of vehicle assembly. It being publicly released certainly enables clients to change, update, re-reason the product according to their necessities.
