One of the most helpful features that opendtect provides is the fact that there is a two-way link to petrel which is one of the most used softwares in the industry, this means that the seg-y data can be work in either software and be imported to and from one another. The thalweg tracker is another excellent feature for isolating channels when working with turbidite related or fluvial reservoir seismic data, which tend to be highly heterogeneous. Perhaps the most valuable features about opendtect are the vast amount of seismic attributes it provides you can use convolution, energy, and frequency, spectral decomposition among others, even in their free and academic versions. One of the things I don’t really like is the survey process and import data features, they tend to be over convoluted, so just creating the basis for your project can be a really tedious job. I can also say that similarly to petrel, this software is incredibly demanding on your pc, even analyzing well data for correlations can drive your pc to turtle speed, and if you plan to run a depth or time migration you might have lots of trouble with a regular pc. Recommendations to others considering OpendTect: For anybody who wants to try opendtect the only recommendation I can truly give is that you go for it, even the free version is amaizing. Just try to use a high end pc for you to get the most out of this software, especially if you plan to use it together with petrel. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Opendtect is an incredible software mostly for seismic interpretation, we tend to use for 2D and 3D pre and post stack interpretation, mostly using seismic attributes. What I like the most is that opendtect is really easy for seismic interpretation. Picking horizons is a really straightforward process, even diagraming faults is easy. Plus working with seismic attributes and applying them to the horizons or the whole volume allows for easier and more precise interpretations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about OpendTect? It's paid version is expensive while the free version is really limited. Also the seismic attributes are not that accurate. It requires a good graphic card or else is not going to work smoothly. When interpreting the horizons you have to create a grid with an offset, and when this offset is small it can go really slow. Recommendations to others considering OpendTect: I recommend using a powerful pc with at least a good graphics card because it is going to make the program run smoother. Opendtect has allowed us to interpret lots of seismic 3D and 2D blocks, that way we reduced the uncertanty when proposing several prospects for drilling.
